DevilDagger Well not to say that it would justify it in your eyes but, like they say in the podcast, the children argument is a new tactic since apparently just saying "loot boxes are scummy and make video games worse" isn't good enough anymore. Also in this specific case the writer talks about how without children specifically spending irresponsible amounts of money it would hurt sports games, not just adults or video gamers in general, which makes it sound like he openly accepts that it's necessary which sounds sorta shitty.

@@vivena9 Saying I can't find statistics is an assumption, not a fact. No one is arguing about cosmetic microtransactions. An upfront optional purchase of a skin or skins is perfectly fine as long as you know exactly what it is you're purchasing. That isn't gambling, that's buying a product. However, when you go from that, to putting down money for the CHANCE of getting something that you want, is when you cross into gambling territory. (Here's the definition if you don't want to take my word for it www.dictionary.com/browse/gambling ) And whether you want to admit it or not, gambling is something that is addictive.

Are pokemon cards gambling? What about MTG cards, yugioh cards, basketball cards, baseball cards, etc. They're basically cardboard lootboxes. They're also targeted at minors. Should they also be banned? Should we threaten physical violence at people in a consensual activity? We shouldn't be using the government to threaten to point guns at people for liking things we don't like. Just don't buy them. And convince other people not to buy them with your words. Wanting to have government step in is the same attitude that got alcohol and marijuana banned. And those were very difficult to overturn when we realized it was a bad idea.

@@SlackisDead I know this is old, but here is the thing. The reason you have age limits, and have limits when it comes to advertising to children, is because they are some of the most vulnerable people in the world when it comes to predatory behaviors. Children don't have the ability to think for themselves like most other people, it is why they have guardians to protect them and make decisions for them. But that is not failproof. Children will still do stupid shit, stupid shit like buying alchohol, smoking, and gambling. They will do this no matter what, even if the guardian tries to get them to stop, so there needs to be something more to be done here. This is why child laws were put in place because there needed to be extra insurance to protect kids from themselves and from falling into the hands of predatory companies who had no care in the world if a child was using their product. To them it meant more dollars, and a new audience to sell to, so those companies needed to be handled which meant all companies needed to be handled the same way. Here, with loot boxes, the same thing is happening. Kids are doing stupid shit, and companies are facilitating it, even if not all of them are. Which means regulations need to be taken.

NOT putting someone who hates RPGs to review a RPG), ideas on what could be next, bringing up issues that are legit problems for people who actually want to break into the industry and don't want to get fucked that are talked about seriously and is researched properly with facts and data backing up their conclusions, getting feedback and love sections for their fans (Like I really Appreciate Game Informer still taking Fan Art and doing a mailbag in the opening pages) and obviously still having looks up coming games, and giving out fair reviews. THATS what I want. I dont want "The fishing was too hard" "Too much water" "This game too hard" "Not enough story" and the newest and dumbest not even about games "Two hours of Monsters hitting each other and not enough story."

The licenses are that expensive because they were already making tons of money from microtransactions. They saw how much money they were making and realized that they could charge much more. So the argument that they need microtransactions to afford the license is only because of microtransactions in the first place. Also, this is assuming that the license will always be worth that much.

Sports is another fandom, I see a lot of similarities. Beyond the sport games, Stadium ticket prices are rising, merchandies get more expansive and with soccer in the EU, broadcasted matches are seperated between 3 subscription services. Everything with a premium tier and a standard garbage tier. We'll see how long that is sustainable. Sport Games still Top the sale charts constantly in germany, FIFA is all the rage. I guess the leagues and peer presure still ship the most copies.

Here's the solution. Don't ban lootboxes, just make the games that have them an automatic AO rating from the ESRB (or your national equivalent, such as Pegi)
@Walt_Xander945 жыл бұрын
They need to be banned. Sure, AO-Rated games are rare af. Not alot of games get that rating, and the few that do are never on store shelves. Loot Boxes wouldnt make much money then, but they'd still make money, and you know EA wouls make the most out of a Loot Box technicality if they could, and games with loot boxes would still be screwed. Loot Boxes need to be banned entirely, so no one can use them at all, and every game wouldnt have them.
@2la84me5 жыл бұрын
Loot boxes should be banned. My first encounter with Lootboxes: Overwatch. My very first thought was "Why cant I just earn these legit?" And earning them legit is "Play until you are given a free loot box and if you get enough coins from dupes THEN you can buy ONE THING of your choice earned from maybe 25 GODDAMN DUPES." Its disgusting, I'd even take the "Play the Game for 40 hours to unlock" or "Win 20 matches in a row" because those are depend on Skill and then ONLY THEN maybe have a "Buy costume for a buck". I almost think for a moment that DOA has the right idea but they are just as if not even more gross with their buying costumes. It's a tragedy that Micro Transactions, Pre-release DLC, and B2P are all less gross than straight up Gatcha and Loot Boxes.

@@2la84me Skins being locked behind rigged, gambling Loot Boxes that people would have no choice but to buy *tons* of to get, is just as bad as pay-to-win Microtransactions. Dont try to say "Its just cosmetics", because that response is always a silly one. Especially now when Epic alone, knows what they're doing when they lock the cool skins behind paywalls. Its just as manipulative. In fact, kids get made fun of, if they have the default skins. So, there's this fear of missing out, kids that dont have the cool skins will be tempted to get the skins that others bought & show off, and give in. In fact, Blizzard does that in *two* ways, Loot Boxes(especially Event specific ones. Making it more mandatory to just pay, because once an event is over, you cant get certain skins again. Not until the next anniversary), and over-charging for that one Genji skin, Tracer skin, and Mercy skin(dont bother mentioning charity, Blizzard used that just to avoid criticism. And it was a test, they went on to over-charge for those Genji & Tracer skins).
@theghostoftheuchiha19995 жыл бұрын
My question now is: If this bill happens then what happens to Overwatch? Their loot boxes are not for extra content, advantages, secret characters, special items, or anything important. Overwatch is purely cosmetic.
@RipOffProductionsLLC5 жыл бұрын
they can start selling the cosmetics directly. "you want Skin X for Character Y? give us 5 dollars." if anything it could increase the profit margins, depending on what prices the individual skins had, and how desirable they are(meaning that the artists/modelers will need to make every individual skin look good).

This is full stop the stupidest argument. 'No loot boxes mean they can't afford the billion dollar licenses that mean the sports game no exist.' Or you know the NFL NBA etc... have to lower their fees. Its that simple. That the licenses cost what they do isn't set in stone. God did not come down and declare that what these things have to cost. If the games can't be made without loot boxes at that price point than the leagues either kiss the profits coming from games goodbye for good out of sheer pettiness (not going to happen) or reach some kind of deal with developers to reflect the new anti-loot box laws. This is all assuming that there is a grain of truth to the claim that they can't make these games without loot boxes which I don't exactly believe.

"Capitalism is the increase of wealth and it's been a pretty good system so far, I think" Capitalism is a system predicated on accumulating capital, hence the name, which has two notable inherent features: 1. Nothing in that definition is connected to ethics. Ethics are only involved insofar as they are useful (see the story you're talking about) 2. That accumulation of capital is only useful in the context of inequality. You can only have buying power relative to people who don't. Capitalism has done some impressive things, but calling it good is questionable. Using capitalism as a mindless boogeyman is stupid, obviously, but there have also been serious critiques of it for like a century and a half now, and they are mostly widely available.

"That accumulation of capital is only useful in the context of inequality. You can only have buying power relative to people who don't." True, but inequality is an inevitable fact of life, because people are different from one another in a wide variety of ways, even if one wanted to argue that many of those differences were more of a subjective "apples and oranges" thing then direct measurable better or worse ability/traits(and I don't think anybody will argue that those don't exist too), you can't say that apples and oranges are "equal" now can you? you can't force equality upon such things without being unfair to someone, not to mention that whoever is enforcing such things inevitably has to be in an unequal position to those they regulate in order to be capable to doing their job.
