the first generation of semi-weebs spawned at the end of the 70's when Plague and I were born. This was well documented in California comic conventions where they were figuratively the SiameseTwins of Furries in the same rooms, mainly passing around bootlegs of mediocre DUBS and then later buying whatever showed up on Fox kids morning like DBZ and Darkstalkers... So the generation a whole Decade ahead of Woolie&Pat weren't Sub purists at all, they were the OPPOSITE.

Woolie getting annoyed because he can't tell if the guy who looks like Kamina isn't voiced by Kamina doesn't make sense, because this is the second time (that I know of) where there was a Kamina-looking guy in a Trigger series, and NEITHER of them are voiced by Katsuyuki Konishi. Woolie, if you read this, remember Kill La Kill? Remember how Nudist Beach had a guy who looked like Kamina, while the guy who actually was VOICED by Kamina was the dude with a mohawk? Yeah, sometimes the reference really is JUST in appearance.

And this is what was really the most annoying part of what Woolie was saying. Like I get it you wanna hear your favorite Japanese VAs but dude, you have the infinity of the internet. You can just.... look it up. I watched Promare subbed and knew INSTANTLY that Galos actor was not Kaminas. Imagine if Woolie HAD seen the sub and had to just get over that Galo wasn’t Kamina. For the record I want to rewatch it dubbed so I can hear Johnny Yong Bosch as Lio. The dude for Galo (Billy Kametz) sounds pretty great from the trailers so I’d be down for it.

I mean I’ll watch whatever. Toonami lets me look at dubs of stuff I’ve already seen so I can get something new out of it, plus really I like going to the toonami Reddit on Saturday’s to see the live chat of that week for shits and giggles. I will say I normally wouldn’t bother with dubs most cases, usually cause it takes longer to come out I guess.

Yeah, I grew up watching dubbed hentai before finding anime. As a result dubs don't bother me as much as they should. When it comes to anime I swap or watch both depending on the kind of show and the kind of dub. For serious shows or If Japanese social norms are impactful on the series interactions like Fate or MHA then then I'll avoid Americanism type dubs. Then for comedey series like DxD or konosuba I try them both and go with whatever gave the best impression and maybe go back to it later.

The Hellsing English dub is excellent and the Drifters English dub so far I really like because there's tons of characters from different eras AND regions. I have a preferance for subs overall... Because of simpsons The brazilian dub of simpsons was atrocious, it bluntly translated puns and cultural references as they where, destroying several jokes in the process. The subs sometimes fixed this, sometimes did the same, but the english being spoken meant it was easier to understand the original intent. And context of the jokes That alone gave me an overwhelming preference for subs Though the lack of brazilian anime dubs (which where great for the most part) also helped that
@Maioly

@@badabingee I actually been meaning to track down subbed saint seiya to confirm some things regardding the brazilian dub... namely that, last time I watched it, 90% of the dialog was rapid fire exposition, but maybe it was just the particular episodes I watched. but yeah, at the least when it comes to comedies or things rooted in a particular culture, I think Subs are definetely the way to go. No offense woolie but you could done the simple research to find out that they didn't get the voice actor of kamina to play galo in either language and avoided the disappointment altogether. Another pointer I'd like to give dubs is the comedic timing of jokes are better because depending on the person you can be ahead or behind the joke throwing a wrench in its delivery. But all in all thanks for talking about it as more of a personal preference thing rather than any sense of elitism, there is often times I struggle to find people who will talk about the endless debate with respect.

As stated before, dub Kamina is Kyle Hebert. I do tend to prefer the original japanese but that doesn't somehow invalidate dubs. In some cases, I much prefer them as the japanese method of acting can often come across as too melodramatic. The negative stigma attached to dubs is fading over time. The 90's are about to be 30 years behind us. And 4kids has been gone for a decade. The practices, regulations, and lack of expertise that made that early slew of bad localization in games and anime has long tapered off. Language choice is turning into preference/region situation rather than a choice in outright quality. The fansub/speedsub and tape trading dodgy stuff days have waned.

There are a few circumstances where dubs do just get better than subs. Baccano! -- an anime that deals with 1930's New York gangsters, so having an American cast doing fake New York accents adds a bit of charm. There's also a few creative decisions that help out as well. I'm the guys who commented about Naruto. Also, like most people said, more new weebs like me (born in 96) don't always prefer dubs but mostly what's available. I will always wanna watch Dragon Ball in English cause that's what I grew up on, but I watched Super subbed because it was the only option. I watched JoJo Part 1 & 2 dubbed but Part 4 & 5 subbed. Granted I read all of those first. Naruto goes either way, but would still prefer dubs. It's just the availability of it. Which anime and Japanese games are more accessible than ever as well as the quality of dubs having gone way up since your old men times.

It's also fun to watch other language dubs of shows. I have watched DBZ in german, spanish, french, english, japanese and greek. And the german dub is great. So many good voice actors. The english dub is the worst to me, because of the Faulconer music and that they tried to make Goku Superman to appeal to americans, which leads to some hilarious out of character moments. "I'm the light of the universe" just doesn't fit the usually humble Goku.

On accents stuff in the anime Black Lagoon while I watched it dubbed due to airing I heard in the japanese audio that the seiyuu (Mami Koyama) of the Russian mob boss Balalaika speaks Japanese the default language for the show, English, and Russian. Which is pretty impressive. On Russians in anime in the show Panzer Und Girls that school girl tank anime the Russian team has an entire battle charge where the russian lasses are singing entirely russian a song actually sung by the Red Army Choir called "Katyusha" which was just written before WWII while the dub omits this song & music completely instead having the girls mouthfaps gone and has tetris (Korobeiniki) plays as they silently drive their tanks. Though I generally agree dubbing use of accents does sometimes give a benefit shows such as Hellsing really are enhanced by the various accents. Really surprised that the "Worst Black guy in anime" didn't come up in this conversation.

Gotta agree with Pat on this one. One thing I didn’t and still don’t like about Japanese versions is that even when they don’t just reuse actors, you already know what every character will sound like. This guy is a warrior who values strength? He’s gonna have a thick deep voice. Oh you’re a cute shy girl? High pitched soft voice. Main hero? You’ll have the token heroes voice. There isn’t a lot of actual variety in Japanese dubs, seemingly because of the cultural idea that individuality is kind of a bad thing. So let’s just have all our characters sound the same and have all our VA’s imitate each other. There are a few exceptions, but in the large that’s kind of just how it goes.

So, my personal experience: I'm a dub person. Of course I started with all the TV dubs, so that argument of "Cartoon Network/Tooami/etc." is totally accurate for me. And I'd MUCH rather hear my own language than be reading the show and missing a small chunk of animation because my eyes are glued to the bottom of the screen. Subtitles I only do for shows that do not get a dub, like Pretty Cure. ...Okay, I know that got like two dubs, but they're both 4kids-level trash, so exceptions made. Konosuba I had to watch subbed and it other than Futari Wa Pretty Cure is like the ONLY show I watched subbed that I can absolutely nail down a certain Japanese performance, because that show is the only subbed show I can say for a fact as an American has absolutely stellar Japanese voice acting because I don't have a proper metric for it. But I'd rather dubs if I can help it. My Hero Academia, fucking beautiful dub that made me love that show and have only only only went to subs because Funi keeps having random delays (*coughamongotherreasons*) and it's the only show I keep up with as it airs. I understand if you'd rather original inflections of voice acting, but these days people still act like all dubs are Resident Evil 1 and it ticks me off. Like guys, even Mega Man moved past Mega Man X4, did anyone see the Command Mission through Maverick Hunter X cast? They were great! And NT Warrior, weird censoring aside, was actually alright and MegaMan didn't sound like a 7-year-old child like the original did! ...Anyway, I understand Woolie grew up in a situation where it was way way harder to even watch the stuff, so of course he'd develop an affinity for the originals and all, but I do feel like going to an international anime movie showing and pretty much poo pooing it over just being the dub seemed like WANTING to be disappointed.

I think people who swear by subs and denounce dubs (like they scoff at the idea of watching dubs) have that same thing that conspiracy truthers have.
