DotA's Coach system isn't the same as the Mentor system, because when you're a coach, you aren't playing the game, you are virtually watching over a "Student's" Shoulder and giving them advice in real time with pings and chat directions. In FFXIV, when you're a mentor, you are a member of the party, you are participating, you are trying to both learn who is making what mistakes, and actively fighting them to get them to both admit they're making mistakes AND convince them to fix said mistakes, just so you can finish the damn encounter. And they never admit they're making mistakes. Ever.

"GALAMURI!" woolie saids without ANY context
@Graysett3 жыл бұрын
Alright Woolie, here's a fun one. Back in the day LoL's honor system gave out ribbons. Ribbons only showed up in champ select and in the loading screen, and there were 4 kinds of ribbons (1 for each type of Honor you could receive from allies, plus 1 more for the one you can receive from opponents). Ribbons did nothing other than showed that you were honored a lot (and if you were in the top 10% of a specific rating type you'd get a special icon to use as your account avatar, of which I collected them all). What ended up happening, is that after the first 2ish weeks of the system hitting live the tier list was established. 1:" Blue" AKA "Great Mentor", the ribbon for being rated as a helpful teammate who actually knew what they were talking about and gave good advice. (Understandably very rare, as you both needed someone who knew what they were talking about and wasn't a toxic dickbag about it AND someone to be doing badly enough to need help but also not tilt-y enough to get butthurt at said advice.) 2: "Yellow" AKA Great Leader", the ribbon for being rated as a good shotcaller by your team (whether throughout the match or just for calling out the game winning play). Not exactly common, but not rare either, usually 1-2 per match. 3: "Green" AKA "Great Teammate", the ribbon for being rated as a friendly player and basically the go-to for anyone who didn't fit either of the above. Very common, about as common as the next one. 4: "Red" AKA "Worthy opponent", the ribbon for being rated as a non BM player by people on the other team (there was a subset of this group who got their ribbons for being sarcastically rated that way by people who got fed off them or who were toxic towards their team, thus making it easier for the other team to win, but Reds who got it this way were about as rare as Blues.) Again, very common. 5: Unrated AKA "bro how do you not have a ribbon?". About as "rare" as a Yellow, again usually 1 per team. But shown visually the way the community (un)consciously treated you was like this: 1 >>> 2 > 3 >> 4 >>>>>>>>>> 5. The result of all of this was that you would go into champ select and LITERALLY be able to see who would be toxic just by scrolling down the name list and seeing which poor fool didn't have a ribbon of any kind. Ribbons were incredibly easy to acquire, honoring was unlimited and you could do it on anyone/everyone else in the match, so NOT having one meant that you either were such a nonfactor that NO ONE cared enough to rate you (extremely unlikely), OR you were toxic and the reports/punishments you were getting were nullifying any Honors you did receive. I can't tell you how many times I'd play LoL, see 1 person who didn't have a ribbon, and then just wait and look for ANYTHING to go wrong for that player and have them immediately start acting toxic. It was insanely consistent, from both teams (because Riot in all their wisdom decided letting you see the other team's ribbons was a good idea, which led to...). But the most entertaining part? Seeing all the bullying the ribbonless would get. People would camp their lanes just to tilt them and watch them implode, or bully them out of roles/champs they wanted in champ select, or just outright ignore anything they said in chat. In lobbies it was practically a brand showing that you were a second class citizen, and in game being ribbonless put a giant target on their back (that they almost always wouldn't be able to handle the mental pressure of), thus leading to a feedbck loop of toxicity that most people couldn't escape from. On the other hand if you DID have a non-red Ribbon, you'd get treated extremely well. People would actually listen to your calls, or try to camp for you, or just generally be legitimately good teammates (even if they fed their ass off). Hell, if you fed they'd just go "bad game, np" a lot of the time instead of ripping into you or trolling (unless it was one of the ribbonless, who usually would respond the way you'd expect a LoL player to respond). It was glorious, never before were my matches so stress free. I knew exactly who would have weak mental, who could be relied on, that people would actually listen to what I said (whether advice or shot calling), and if shit went bad and I fed most people wouldn't cause a stink about it. But alas, Riot quickly saw what was happening and changed how the system worked, for admittedly good reasons. Turns out having an unofficial underclass of people wasn't exactly the most fun thing for said people, and so not so long later Ribbons disappeared, now replaced by a basic flair that merely marked that you'd been honored in your last match. - Was the pain the Ribbonless had to go through worth the massively improved gameplay experience for the other 80% of players in the match? That's for you to decide, but I'll say this, I miss those days and always knowing who was gonna be the dick that ruined the fun for everyone before anyone even said a word.
@Graysett3 жыл бұрын
Another fun one about the old Honor system was when the Tribunal existed, which was a way for players to decide whether people who were toxic actually deserved punishment or not. Basically, voluntary jury duty (complete with getting a pittance of in-game cash). However that system was a crapshoot for a few reasons. 1: It was opt in, and not that many people knew about it. 2: You only got your reward if you were on the majority side once the player in question was done being judged. If you said No but every one else said Yes, you get jack shit. 3: The only people who showed up in the Tribunal were people who were getting reported ALL THE TIME, which meant that you knew for an absolute fact that almost every player who you got to vote on absolutely DID deserve it. 4: Voting was as easy as scrolling down the page past the chat log then clicking "Yes" (AKA "Deserved") / "No" (AKA "Nah they good"). The result was that people would log in, vote Yes on everyone regardless of whether or not they deserved it (but to be fair, they almost always did deserve it, like 96 times out of 100), then wait for the cash to come in. It was never a huge amount, but it was a nice boost on the side. This system was eventually replaced with the auto-mod system that basically did the same thing the players were doing but way faster and more accurately. TL:DR, instead of going to the Tribunal when you were reported enough, you'd get sent to the bot which would then scroll for the list of naughty-no-no's it'd been programmed to look for and then hit you with a punishment if you didn't pass. This is the punishment system that's still in the game actually, it works surprisingly well.

I think the frustration is that Team games are mostly designed with set roles and if the Healer or Tank dies or messes up the run tends to go to shit. Meanwhile in games like Counter Strike without set roles a good enough player can carry and win the match for their teammates. It's also why the Behemoth fight in MHW isn't the best, since it changes a game where you normally jump into any fight with any weapons more into having "roles" and forcing 4 person teammate and more strict do or die mechanics.

On the Astro thing Pat was talking about, Astros toolkit works more in tandem with regens, some of their cooldowns extend the effects of their spells, which with shields doesn't do anything since the shield would probably die out before the time ran out normally anyway, not to mention that they suffer a potency gimp when they go shield, they shield for less than they regen. Plus Regens stack so there's no reason to not just double stack regens with White Mage where as shields don't stack at all, even with Scholar the other Shield healer. There's a reason why they're reworking Astro to do away with the Shields cause no one likes Shield mode.

Just yesterday was doing the final Eden 8 man in ff14 on the normal difficulty, on normal. I can confirm 1 bad healer can doom an entire run. The gimmick of the fight is the boss will absorb an element biased on a picture you can see and cast a predetermined aoe. Every time the 1 healer would get caught in it then die after two or three because the vulnerability would become too much. But despite that we would get to the final phase then wipe because the heal rush would get too much for the one healer or he would make 1 mistake. Thus leaving us with no healers which would cause a wipe. It got to the point of putting an icon above the good healer and tanks head to show, please stand here when an aoe is coming I know how to dodge it this spot is safe. But nope... did 3 15 minute runs of this before abandoning because after 4 runs he was still dying on the first phase. In short, yeah pats right on the fact you can join a group and just tell how it’s going to go within 30 seconds of a run.

13:27 - you CAN get that, especially on first kills. Case in point: in wow (circa Burning Crusade; what i'm about to say is very probably no longer accurate), i played an arms/fury warrior which there straight-up wasn't a raid spot for. not as much DPS as the rogues, not as much tank as the pallys/tank warriors. Whatever. My guild got to Vaelstrasz for the first time; his gimmick is that he wipes the raid in 3 minutes, but you get infinite resources AND can get a buff called "burning adrenaline" which gives you double threat/dps but also kills you dead in like 30 seconds. Short version, your tanks die at intervals regardless of what their health is, so you need a rotation. Also, positioning is important cuz - being a huge-ass dragon - he bites and breathes fire and shit like that, so you want his head pointed AWAY from the casters. Anyway. My babby-DPS-y ass was in with the tanks, constantly generating low threat - more than the casters, less than the "actual" tanks. Vael was at like 2% when our last "real" tank died - but I had a *lot* of threat, and I knew what the tanking mechanics were. So, I run to the tank spot, taunt him, pop fucking *everything*. Raid lead is shouting for people to heal me - and man do they try, but I just wasn't geared for tanking. So, I die. And then a second later, Vael dies. You're goddamn right we were celebrating that shit.

Necro post, but. Woolie's problem with high end Teppen is the same reason I don't like any competitive CCG at the high end. The room for skill narrows exponentially the higher you get. And while the very best of the best of the best narrowly squeak out more wins than others, mostly in any hugely populated game, it's about "do you have the $$$ to instantly swap to whatever the 55% winrate deck is vs the 53%" and "do you have the time to grind out enough games to climb the ranks". Too many good decks in games are only good because they have a relatively high probability of drawing one of many permutations of winning opening hands, where the chances of the opponent beating you if you draw well are incredibly low, combined with the usual favored matchups. It's the fighting game matchup problem exacerbated by RNG manipulation. It sucks. It's one of those things you probably don't notice until you play thousands upon thousands of games and then you start to see the Matrix. Even when you're winning and playing in grandmasters it can often feel like you don't really deserve it. You're just playing the odds and playing autopilot with the barest dash of skill and intuition thrown on top.

I barely know any destiny lore despite finishing both games for this reason. If they don't care enough to put it in the game it just makes me think that it isn't worth reading.

@@merk2364 I was a kind of “Lore keeper” for my crew when playing so I took it upon myself to learn the lore, it’s fascinating and no one cares because of how frustrating and tedious it is to achieve the cards, it’s why I know of only one Destiny lore channel in all of KZbin cause it’s like, no one plays the game anymore for anything but the Crucible

I'm gonna play Devil's Advocate and say that the "pay for transmog" thing most likely refers to the Eververse ornaments that you can buy for Silver(DestiBux), which can also be earned by spending Bright Dust that you get through in game activities. Also, they've stated that everything you have in your Collection (i.e. any armor you've gotten throughout all of D2) will be available for transmog.

It always makes me sad when I see destiny getting shit, the game has so much potential and the gameplay is actually fun. Pat is pretty dead on about the mentor roulette. The most unfortunate aspect of it as well is that all of the difficult fights in there can be easily cleared outside of the roulette by just going in with level 80 players slaughtering the fights. When you have to do these fights at their natural difficulty with players who in no way will clear it in the allotted hour they have, it really boggles the mind why these fights even needed to be in the roulette. Progressing an extreme primal people are unfamiliar with usually can take 2 to 3 hours. No fucking way are you clearing any of those fights with new players that don't use their buttons or dodge basic shit.

I enjoyed mop quite a bit it did do well despite it's reputation but the damage was done, cataclysm for all it's fixed with questing and such got a huge amount of flak for it's changes, same with legion there was a lot of positive feedback but it had plenty of naysayers as well.
