Agree with all. Your perspective is unique. You did not mention filling systems. That interests me. The PenBBS magnetic filler was one of 2020s highlights. Maybe not as easy to use but definitely very cool. Also what new materials will pens be made of, saw Ben Walsh Design's concrete pen. Will urushi continue to grow in popularity? Prices come down as volume goes up. Who will expand design to explore new unique concepts? Loved the metal "glass" nib from Tokyo Show. What can be new? Thanks for your attention to detail & for sharing your pen thoughts.Thanks for the PalemrsPens mention. Look for one of his nibs in a PenBBS pen on eBay. One of my new 2021 pen adventures. We will never be done with sparkly/shiny pens, at least I won't. I think your predictions are interesting and probably right on. I wonder if I can add some Perfect Pearls mica powder to some of my ink samples and use it with a glass or dip pen. I think I will give it a try and see what happens - I won't put it in a fountain pen, though. The color blocking trend is beautiful and I hope it continues. I adore the watermelon pen!! The other day I was thinking how great it would be if, for example, TWSBI eco would do some versions with the opaque cap then same colour in transparent barrel and the nib bit could be either the transparent or opaque colour for that section. Why do I want this ... yep was considering I like pens in a matchy-matchy mono colour somedays but other days I would love interchangeable parts in different colours .... plus to have a collection of the screw-in nib sections in different colours and nib sizes would really be a bonus to quickly change from a fine to a stub to an oblique to an extra fine nib and change colours at same time would be fun! But anyone who just likes blue, could amass a collection of blues. And it would be nice for special editions to change up the colour of the blue pen or the pink pen from time to time. I now have a few Lamy safaris that I change up from time to time. My dog chewed on a few so I do have a hot pink pen no cap and also a yellow cap & nib section but no barrel ...keeps life interesting! I would like to see more nibs in various colours like on the Iris or some blue nibs and black nibs. After this awful 2020 and lockdown, I think many folks have taken up or just taken more time to journal and write and paint - more creative outlets plus more colour options in what we use, wear, etc so yes more kinds of paper and journals and leather covers and pens/inks will be popping out all over. But I do think many will be looking at options with big value for money. Products easy to source and easy on the wallet along with decent quality will do well with many people. Already seeing some new options for planning journals which are & will give hobonichi some overdue competition for better pricing, easier sourcing, more appropriate to markets in North America and parts of Europe.

Great video! Loved the photos and cinematography, thoroughly enjoyed this. I 100% agree on how much more color and shiny is entering the fountain pen and ink world, with more shimmers in copper and sheens with new qualities, I think this year and in future years we’ll be seeing some really fun, colorful inks. Going with that are the new multicolored pens. I also appreciate that you cover latest stationery trends in Japan. I also have had a suspicion with all the new inks about that paper is going to become more important to people as you mentioned. Loved the semi-transparent cat one. A lot were Sailor Pro Gears and the Watermelon pen is a limited edition Realo sold at Kingdom Note. I mixed a basic ink with pearlescent 1-5 micron mica & some fluorescent pigment mica. I like when it is not over the top sparkle. Some of the colors look amazing & have not ruined or clogged any of my fountain pens. I would like to see color blocking where a group of pens are interchangeable. Like switch the caps & barrels if you purchase a group of pens. I did that last year with a group of 6 pens I purchased & even added a bit of color at the tips of each pen. I was bored when I did this & the fountain pens actually look much more interesting... Silly, right? I always enjoy your videos.

If only Lamy would follow your suggestion. In general, I feel that these companies would profit greatly from just giving us nerds what we want. I’ve had similar ideas, for instance, why not make a 146 or 149 in the British racing green color? Bring back the ink color while you’re at it. I would love to see Pelikan go the route of Sailor , making m400/600/800 in mixed solid colors like the cocktail series, where the section, piston nob, and finial are well chosen but differing colors.
@InkyRocks4 жыл бұрын
That sums it up right there. Give us nerds what we want and we will be so hyped about it that non-nerds will want it too. A 146 in racing green would fly off the shelf. Limited/unusual colored Pelikans sell out. "If you build it, they will come" fits nicely here.

Amazing video with some amazing stuff in there.Thank you Inky Rocks ! The only sad thing is that all this amazing stuff is out of reach for us in Europe. And although as you said some stationery shops in Japan are opening to on-line selling, the delays on post caused by the pandemic ( I'm still waiting a pen from UK to Greece since Black Friday ) and the new EU customs regulations demanding to pay VAT for all parcels coming from abroad, are disheartening at least. Finally we will only get the products that will reach the European stores. Still, we can keep on dreaming with your videos :-) Thanks again and keep up the nice work that you are doing !

@@InkyRocks I’m hoping to be good this year, I plan to get a Sailor Pro Gear (I’d like a regular size but realistically it will probably be a slim) once the sale of Mum and Dads house has gone through. Unfortunately they both past away 12months and 30months respectively, so I want my Son and I to buy a small something. Also I hope to get a Lamy 2000 for my birthday (from Hubby) and from Christmas money I’d like the coloured Twsbi mini and if I’m very lucky a handmade pen by the end of 2022. Saying that I received my PenBBs 456 this morning and a vintage Pilot Elite with a gold nib is on its way from your neck of the woods, that I won very cheaply from EBay. My pseudo futuristic predictions : 1) Non-metallic nibs : polymers, baby ! Which will lead to nib-feed units made as one single integrated part. 2) Thermal inks that change colour with ambient temperatures (like those 1970's mood rings). Which will lead to photographs of ink splatters on snow and sand. And horrible accidents inside refrigerators. 3) Personalized 3D Printed bas-relief decorations glued on finials. For instance, cute animals or computer generated cameos made from photographs sent by the customer. Which will lead to creepy homages to dead pets. 4) Disparition of the clip in favour of 'invisible' roll stoppers (offset weight inside the body). 5) Malleable grip sections that conform to your fingers then you bake them in your oven to make the section permanently hard. 6) Demonstrators pens with an infinity mirror effect : images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/5563c849e4b09841c644c3bc/1434389131034-SI0ZW53SUMSM88HHDW3C/image-asset.jpeg?content-type=image%2Fjpeg 7) Modern maki-e with holographic patterns embed in the lacquer. 8) Scratch-n-sniff scented inks. Which will inevitably lead to a ink that smell like bacon.

Trends that are already in full swing, and that I dislike: Pens with metal sections. I find them slippery. More pens with silver-colored trim and nibs. When I spend money on a fountain pen, especially an expensive one, I want gold or gold-colored nibs and trim. I have grown tired of pens with black cap and barrel-ends, unless they are on black pens. Aurora Optimas are an example of what I mean. I applaud Lamy Safari pens that have clips that match the overall pen color, or are painted a different color instead of being silver. The Lamy safari Petrol and Mango are examples of what I mean. I am discouraged by the manufacturers who claim to be making "flex" nibs that AREN'T flex.
@InkyRocks4 жыл бұрын
You are right, those things that you don't like are in full swing and probably won't go away for this year. I think one of the reasons of the success of the Safari is that they do the clips different like that. You are right about the flex--that is why I think the Blue Dew is such a great pen.
