To clarify the inspiration for the anime, the series is based on castlevania 3 (nes) and castlevania: curse of darkness (ps2) which takes place imediately after the events of 3, with the backstory of a certain character that subtitles spoiled being based on castlevania: symphony of the night. Also, all the castlevania games take place in the same time line spanning secveral hundred years with many titles having characters that are descendants of previous characters, The belmont family being a common recurring family in the series.

The first Castlevania game came out in 1986, but that didn't have any plot besides "a guy fighting a vampire" while JoJo already had multi-generational fights across parts 1 and 2. And part 3 started before the games that this show is based on. So JoJo is Castlevania before Castlevania.

The reason why Castlevania is as good as it is, is because it wasn't made by Netflix. Netflix is just the publisher, the show was made by an outside studio.

Not quite. They were involved pretty early in the production. In fact, the project was apparently in production hell until a deal could be negotiated with Netflix. And according to Warren Ellis, Netflix was very positive about his original scripts that he wrote in 2007, and so he had to only make a few changes to fit the Netflix format while staying true to the version of the script Konami had accepted.

Witcher was an in-house project, Netflix made it and published it, Castlevania was just published by Netflix. Now did Netflix did try to change somethings here and there, sure, but not to the extent that they write it themselves. This is all I'm saying. Adi Shankar the showrunner literally has his own animation studio, unlike Lauren Hissrich the showrunner of The Witcher.

Ultimately, the individual creators are the ones that'll dictate the direction of the show. 5:40 the difference is that Vlad Tepes was a real person from the 15th century whose legend let to the invention of Dracula, vampire is a race which was based from Dracula's legend as such there are multiple vampires and vampire legends that arent directly related to Dracula. an example is Carmila(not necessarily the character of the show/game) who is based on real-life Elizabeth Bathory.

Vampire as a concept has been around for millenia under different names. The Vlad 'Dracula' Tepes being a vampire was rather recent and made by someone not even Wallachian hundreds of years after the fact. There are more actual myths and legends without Dracula than with, because Dracula just popularised it. Also fun tid bit: Vlad Tepes is both a victim and beneficiary of his own propaganda. Both as a feirce hero and ruler, and an unrivaled powerful monster of his time. I think an Englishman just found it fun to make him an actual monster vaguely inspired by werewolves and other myths +christianity.

bram stoker, the author of "dracula", was originally going to name his vampire something else but upon hearing the story and name of vlad dracula, he changed the story and the name of the book to fit him. also "tepes" is not his last name. it is someone his enemies called him. "tepes" meaning Impaler. dracula was his true last name, having taken a last name after his father, vlad dracul.

I'm not sure I'd agree that vampires aren't derived from the myth of Dracula, since vampire lore represents the "intelligent bloodsucker" as was popularized by the Lord of Vampires himself. Many bloodsuckers throughout history were more animalistic or mindless. They didn't observe rules about thresholds (because how would they understand being invited in), nor were they considered cunning. They were considered demonic. Most bloodsuckers were thought of as a kind of undead/zombie or a hellish night creature. Dracula popularized the idea of a bloodsucker as having something of a soul, rationality, and humanity. His myth popularized the idea of the "bloodsucker among us," the idea that bloodsuckers could be people, could look like people and think like people and walk and talk like people. Rather than mouths full of sharp teeth, they had canine fangs, but otherwise human features. They had mostly regular bodies and voices. They weren't skeletal abominations or beings from another plane of existence. Before Dracula, people didn't think bloodsuckers were as sophisticated, nor were they considered to be living beings that were inflicted with a curse. Many bloodsuckers were a kind of supernatural creature or a demonic beast resurrected through black magic. They weren't generally thought of as looking human. Any humanity was considered long gone. That's why some slept in graves, because they would crawl back to where they came from and reanimate later. That's where hair and nails growing because a myth, because it implied they were specifically coming back to life from a lifeless corpse. Vampires are distinctly intelligent creatures. They understand what a threshold means and are therefore bound by human laws. They're awake at night, but they don't go back to being dead during the day, they sleep. Vampires are largely considered alive (immortal but not undead)

Some information you may find interesting is that Vlad Dracula or Vlad the Impaler was an actual person. He was the leader and ruler of Wallachia, which is located at Romania, as well as one of their national heroes. The opening scene of the skeletons impaled was how Vlad would punish his enemies and victims. He even fought an Ottoman army to stop being conquered. He would use scare and horror tactics to attack at night to traumatise his enemies and not allow them to sleep or relax. And an Irish man was passing by. He was inspired by the legend and stories that he wrote the story, Dracula. For more information, you should watch the series Rise of the Empires: Ottoman, the 2nd season touches on Vlad and his history. Like Dracula or Dracul was actually an old Romanian noble house. I hope this was informative for whoever reads it. Also, I literally screamed when I saw you finally reacted to the series. Also, all of the people were there to witness the burning. At the time, the Church was the ruler and had the most power. People would always witness these burning to curse the "witches." And sorry if I seem like I am rambling, but another thing is that I did a thesis on feminist. There was a philosopher named Simone de Beauvore who specialises in feminism. She said that in the beginning, women specialised in healing and medicine. Men were threatened by this, so to suppress them, they spread the rumours of witchery even though they were helping deal with illnesses. This is why men dominated the medicine field when originally women were experts. I'm not sure if spoiler but spell Dracula backwards.

Weird fact! Vlad Dracula the Impaler actually cried blood in real life because of a respiratory disease! Another (even grosser) fact about the real life Vlad Dracula is he actually impaled his enemies on sticks outside his castle! That is the reason he was nicknamed "Vlad the Impaler" Lisa actually referenced this when she entered his castle in the beginning of the episode. Also Dracula was a REAL individual, 'Dracula' isn't an alternative WORD that means Vampire, vampires are a race where as Dracula was a person. It was his literal name. His full name in real life was *Vlad Drăculea Tepes the III* or otherwise known 'Vlad The Impaler' he was born in Transylvania in 1431 and was the prince of the real life place of Wallachia (which is now Southern Romania).

@@MUFFUGHCCINJONES i think I gave Invincible Season 1 an 8.5, hyped for season 2 because I know that the story is going to be crazy. and Vox Machina was originally an 8 but Season 2 brought it up to a 9 Castlevania and Arcane are both perfect 10s, just because I cant really see anything where it can be improved upon. The only other show I can really think is a perfect 10 would be Avatar, but that's because it was made in 2005.

"She's not burning!" People didn't directly light the stake on fire usually, they lit piles of wood around the stake. It doesn't immediately light up the stake. Sometimes, as a "mercy", people put extra hay on the wood around the stake so that the fire would be delayed a little bit and the person at the stake would die from heat exposure or smoke inhalation before the fire actually reached them. So it's not crazy she would be in the center of the fire and not die immediately.

Some fun etymology for you. Vlad Dracul II is "Vlad the Dragon" in medieval Romanian, Dracula is the Slavonic genitive form of Dracul, meaning "[the son] of Dracul (or the Dragon)" but in modern Romanian "Dracul" means "the Devil." also "Țepeș" translates to "Impaler." So Vlad Țepeș Dracula III translates to "Vlad the Impaler son of the Dragon/Devil" depending on Medieval or Modern Romanian.

Vlad Tepse was a real person. You probably know him as “Vlad the Impaler.” He sold his sole to the devil and became known as “Dracula.” Which means “Son of the Dragon.” And side note: I like the AC games thank you very much. Origins, Odyssey and Valhalla are good games.

I am Romanian👋, and listening to them pronouncing the names of the villages or cities was funny , Walachia its called Romania right now ...and Transylvania is 5 hours away from were I live .The animation gets better with each season ,I liked the symmetry of the show especially by the end and how Dracula and Lisa s story came around .

in the castlevania mythos, dracula is a vampire but his origin are not normal and thus grants him powers that other vampires don't have: teleportation, summoning demons, shooting fire, etc. also, he is considered an avatar of chaos, thus granting him other powers and knowledge as well.

When I was studying Iberian History in the first semester of the History course, I remember that in addition to the various forms of torture during the Inquisition, they could even put sticks, dampened pieces of wood so that the "infidels" burned more slowly. After 20 years, those testimonies, those images are still vivid...

The writing in this show, man. It's incredible how everyone goes into this fully knowing Dracula is supposed to be the antagonist of the series, yet 5 minutes into the first episode and the whole audience has already been converted to his side. That's a "villain" done right.

Another *great* anime series adaptation of a video game is _Gungrave_ (2003), it's kind of a riff on the story structure of Berserk, complete with the first episode being set in the future and the rest flashing back to the past.

Note that Wallachia is a real place. It's a state in modern day Romania, and is where the real life Vlad Dracula ruled in the 1400s.

In this universe Vladimir Dracula Tepes is the son of the greater noble house of Tepes in the Austro-Hungarian Principality of Walachia (modern day Romania/Moldova/Northern Bulgaria) and was known as Vlad the Impaler; he is considered the original vampire and earned his moniker for slaughtering all of his relatives, a series of merchants, and their servants and impaling them on spikes outside his family home after making a deal with death itself during his execution. This deal made him into the original vampire and was made to enact vengeance on the merchants that had used him as a scapegoat when their uprising failed and his family for refusing to believe him when he denied it. IRL Vladimir III Draulesti Tepes slaughter and tyranny caused so much destabilization of the local monarchy that after he took power the Principality of Walachia literally fell apart 11 years later and was conquered by the Ottomans where it remained under imperial rule untill the mid 1800's. Or at least, thats what I can remember. It's been awhile since I studied that era of history. I'm also pretty sure Walachia's borders was the furthest west that Ghengis Khan's Golden Horde ever managed to reach.

Fun trivia fact that surprised me: Apparently Dracula’s VO also voiced Loki in EMH (Earth’s Mightiest Heroes)! Who knew such a badass voice was also shared by a villain from a show I watched growing up.

Just to give more context on this iteration of Dracula: He use to be a man long ago who lost his first wife because of, you guessed it, the Church he served screwed him over. He sold his soul in exchange for immortality and power to enact revenge against the Church and humanity itself. So him losing Lisa stoked a fire that was almost out as he was tired of the back-and-forth until the events of this series.
