One of my favorite NES games! Such amazing music and atmosphere! This is a great guide to follow and you made fairly short work of what used to take me so much more time as a kid. One of the rare times I would recommend getting one of the patched versions that fixes the townsfolk messages (to be more useful). I appreciate you breaking down the time. As a kid, I never knew how to read that meter. I was fascinated by the fact that there were three endings to get too. Growing up, I only knew of the Neutral and Bad ending and was floored to learn of the hand coming out of the grave (this was before KZbin was really big).

Completely right, Jackal. Yeah the translations were butchered in the English version which normally don't matter but in this game this tips were meant to be the lifeline/compass to tell you where to go.

@@VideoGames101 I reccommend playing the revamped Version of Castlevania 3 and the revamped version of Simos Quest. Look up, Ed Findlay. You wont regret it
@leoda_lion41073 ай бұрын
This was one of my favorite games as a kid. The music and play were what sold me. A lot of people don't like it because it breaks away from the Castlevania formula a little, but its called Simon's Quest. Meaning your going on a journey. I don't have an issue with developers trying to do something new once in a while. And the fact that they gave you multiple endings was good too. I got the worst ending because back then, there was no internet, so I just went exploring like crazy trying to find every item in the game to see what was needed, and like you guys said a lot of them suck and have no real purpose. The clue books are just as pointless at times. At the end, I just used the sacred flame on Dracula to put him away. I find it funny how the boss is the easiest. Fighting Death was a bigger challenge.

Agree totally! Today its hard to remember how innovative this game was. The atmosphere & music made it feel very different than what we thought of as a "video game" at that time. I loved it!

I believe that the speed runners actually have a special name for this zombie, but I don't remember what it is off the top of my head.

Not that this is important, but you can get the flaming upgrade for the whip on the "chain whip". When I played through this the 1st time in 1989, I never found the Morning Star, so when I met the wizard; he added "power to burn away evil" to my less powerful chain whip.

Yours is the first walkthrough I've seen, to correctly identify how to jump across those moving blocks. Yes, the direction of movement controls the height of your jump, so it's safer to jump as the block is moving up, and not waiting until it's at the peak, which is far more dangerous. Conversely, if you have two blocks that are closer together, waiting until it's moving downwards is advised, so you have a better chance at landing on a closer block.
@VideoGames101Ай бұрын
Yep, it's counter-intuitive but it's backwards in that regard. Good point on the two blocks like getting across the swamp later in the game.

The "curse" was b.s. Simon Belmont's just such a badass that after he obliterated Dracula the first time, he wasn't satisfied, and had to put the dupe back together to murder him to death a second time.

Excellent video, Professor! I used to be intrigued by this game back in the day, since I only read about it Players Guides, with no pictures. It sounded like such a grand adventure, so it was interesting to find out years later it was basically a prototype SotN, with lots of annoying edges that needed sanding off. Glad to see the Golden Knife get some love; many playthroughs tend to prefer the Sacred Flame.

@ikagura2 ай бұрын
Bless you for that guide, aside from abstruse ways of advancing the game is not that bad (it's arguably easier than Dracula's Curse once you get to level 3-4 and have the third whip). The time limit is a bit bs imo because they never tell you that you need to go fast (and the "best" ending does not look like it's the canon/better one because Dracula still comes back) but I would have loved if there was a true Metroidvania remake of Simon's Quest in the style of SotN while keeping the NES aesthetic. I still totally get why III and IV came back to the original style although the split paths from III and Rondo totally got inspired by the non linearity of II. PS: Is it me or it shares many similarities with Zelda II (not only because it's a side scrolling platformer RPG but because you need to go into Palaces like Mansions while the very final dungeon is still technically accessible but you cannot enter yet unless you had everything).
@VideoGames1012 ай бұрын
Thank you, and that's a fair observation, ikagura, with the Zelda II comparisons. You can approach them both in slightly non-linear ways, as well.

Actually The one where the hand comes out is the bad ending, the second one is normal, and the last one is the good ending. The context says Peace has been restored, meaning the curse was destroyed and Simon lives. Finally another fact: Did you know that during the reign of Vlad Tepes, there were people who conspired against him by actually selling to the Ottoman Turks and that is why they make the reference of sellers hiding and you having to find them? Interesting piece of history
