This is the first game I got because of something in a magazine, and it was the full walkthrough in the first issue of Nintendo Power Advance. I beat the game without the guide, but I liked looking through it, and I still do whenever I find my copy of NPA.

Of course, it's worth noting that while this is a Metroidvania game, it's the only one in the series that isn't an "Igavania" as Igarashi wasn't actually involved in the development of this title. Also, this is my favorite game in the series and I love seeing it run at these marathons.

I remember playing this game on a GBA emulator on a PC as a kid and as it was the first Castlevania game I played, did not realize that there was a map. So i finished the game mentally mapping out the whole castle. Great, painful, happy times.

I had never heard of fighter mode and when I heard you entered gradius to activate it I was really hoping it was playing through circle of the moon as a gradius ship. Still a pretty cool run though!

I definitely did the sewers without the cleansing tab. For me, many Castlevanias are unforgiving. Sorta like Dark Souls so I just figured they made the area hars

My first GBA game ever, still sad that the cartridge lost the ability to save, but it really got me into Metroidvania games and I still play them to this day. And now, back to Bloodstained!

If you dont get the right cards to drop then this game has one of the hardest final boss fights ive ever seen, in my opinion its harder than any souls like boss, dlcs included.

2nd form Dracula being difficult casually wasn't helped by the Nintendo Power guide for the fight giving wrong information. Switched around the descriptions for when he was invulnerable vs when you could damage him.

Interesting that they did Fighter Mode for this. Though I get why it would be preferable for a speed run not having DSS takes out a big part of what makes the game fun IMO.

IGAvania are the Castlevania entries from Symphony of the Night onward, directed by Koji Igarashi, who is often just noted in the credits as IGA. All of those titles are known for their (mostly) non-linear structure as well as a certain level of interconnection through expanded lore. Circle of the Moon is technically an outlier, as it features no involvement from Igarashi and doesn't conform to the established "Belmont Lineage" storytelling.

Why the run’s with the Japanese version? Any particular reason?

I always just thought that it's due to less text on screen so it makes it faster to skip the dialogue.

rule of thumb with speedruns: if the language is not the default and not the runner's native language, you can assume it's because it's faster.

There are usually 2 very common reasons for that. The first is as one other person already said is simply because the huge difference between japanese and western languages. As Japanese symbols can convey whole words ( and i believe in same cases even more words with a single symbol hence text is often a lot faster in japanese ). The second reason is due to the fact that back then japanese games were often Version 1.0 and while they were ported over to the U.S and Europe they often got some fixes and very minor changes ( so we might get Version 1.01 or 1.02) so certain glitches and exploits which were available in the japanese version are no longer available in the U.S/EU Version.

Older games do text character by character, so in Japanese, Chinese and other non-abc languages a character 90% of the time is a word rather than part of one. So a good example would be Fire, that’s four characters in English but one in Japanese.

I did the sewer section without the cleansing amulet first run through. I used the jupiter/mandrake combo in safe sections to regen. Took me two days to get through as I remember leaving my GBA on the charger as I went to school as not to lose my progress
