Major points for having Dario Argento's Tenenbre as an avatar. Suspiria however is my favorite horror film of all time. it was like a living nightmare caught on film, an absolute one of a kind of experience that made me feel like I was experiencing a dream. Anyhoo, Rondo's such a great game. the funky techno-vamp tunes and super colorful visuals make this one stand out from the rest. in ways, I even prefer it over SCIV, it's definitely a LOT more challenging.

The reason Rondo of Blood never saw the light of day in the United States was because NEC had little to no third party support stateside, especially on the CD, self-publishing just about every title on the system with a few exceptions from companies such as Working Designs. Alongside Dracula X, there're a ton of great Konami games on the PC Engine that never saw the light of day in the US on the TurboGrafx because Konami had absolutely no presense on the TG-16 in North America -- we just happened to get lucky when they decided to port Snatcher to the Sega CD. NEC had an exclusivity contract with Konami for Dracula X, much like how Nintendo of America had these sort of embargos on titles for the NES (Sunsoft's Batman on Genesis having to be delayed to 1991 because of this as an example), and in order for the game to be released on another console like the Super Nintendo, it had to be redone as practically an entirely different game to avoid any potential lawsuits. Also, you can't tell me you two trudged all the way through Shadows of the Empire but won't stay for the whole ride on the best Castlevania game ever :]

For a possibly better experience, try patching this game with the English Translation that's available online (and yes, James, it is the same as the PSP rerelease's translation). I actually like this version as the original Japanese version goes over my head since the only way I can understand it is through a readme document, and that has a botched translation.

Fun fact: The word "輪廻" that takes the place of the word "Rondo" in the Japanese title is actually normally read as "rinne," which is the Japanese word for the Buddhist concept of the cycle of death and rebirth (so the title is actually saying something like "Reincarnation of Blood"). Japanese writers sometimes like to take kanji and assign a totally different reading to them for stylistic purposes, in this case "ロンド" or "rondo" (you can see it on the cover and title screen in between the two kanji above). This is probably supposed to be a pun, since "rondo" is derived from the Middle English word for "circular object." BTW, it's generally agreed that the TG-16 was actually 8-bit with a 16-bit graphics chip. That's why it got left way behind by the true 16-bit consoles (though amusingly, the Genesis could only display 64 colors at a time while the TG-16 could display 482).

***** It depends. Different TVs have different amounts of lag and it has been getting better with time. I'm sure Mike's 65 inch TV has less lag than my 65 inch TV which is a bit older (not 4K). I don't think my TV will even accept 240p signals (never tried). But lag could be a reason they died some of those times. Try the game on a CRT TV and see if you do better. Mega inconvenient but ya never know. :)

Cinemassacre (not to sound like a dipshit) but why would you buy a 4k tv? You can't play console games in 4k res, and to my knowledge blue ray movies don't come in 4k res either. Also since it's a TV , it probably runs at 30 herz. So... 4k monitors ftw? 5k imacs ftw? 4tvs... erm...?

I think the failure on the TG16 was in the marketing and the limited library of games. In Japan where the PC Engine was fully supported with a huge library of games it actually out sold the Sega Mega Drive by a considerable margin.
@gc3k
@gc3k 8 жыл бұрын
Only one controller port out of the box was a turnoff for anyone interested in the system. And the PC Engine library really shined with the CD add-on, but asking parents buy extra hardware for the kids didn't work for Sega, and it wasn't going to work for TG16 in the US It was bad marketing, and the path to success that PCE had in Japan (stock PCE as a superior competitor to NES--> CD add-on as a superior competitor to SNES) wasn't going to work in the US when TG16 came out

Most of the NES library is garbage, although the standout titles REALLY stand out for their quality. Same goes for the Sega Genesis and especially the PS1. I think the console with the highest ratio of good to bad games might be the Neo Geo, possibly the Dreamcast too.

Classic Castlevania greatness! I was one of those people that actually imported this game when it was released in Japan. Even before it become extremely rare, it costs me a hefty price to get a hold of this one. One side note about the game is that it required the SuperCD HuCard memory expansion(which comes built into the TurboDuo) if you're using the old Turbo 16 with CD-ROM. You also need to get a Japanese to American HuCard converter(they swapped a few of the pins around) which stuck out of the front of your system.

Adrian Fahrenheit I mean the duration. I use Cross crash against Death because he kind of leaves the screen when he's hit, and when he comes back, there are still more crosses waiting for him, and continuing to take out his scythes.

The watch is actually 2nd best because it's not only slowdown the time but also doing a homing damage which has no escape like Holy Water.

Adrian Fahrenheit Item Crash of the Watch worked the same as the PC Engine and the PSP Remake. The Item Crash had slow time+the Symbol of the Watch will homing attack anything on screen. That's why Holy Water, Watch and Cross are considered the best weapon with the Axe being fourth.

I use to feel that way too for some time but there was something about Orders that just changed my mind about the ones before it. I loved PoR and DoS too but the anime style drawing really put me off. When I saw the art style in OoE i was sold. And i loved the overall design of the game from the stages to the castle itself.

I, too, love the art style of Ecclesia. I also don't like the anime style of DoS and PoR, and the gothic style of Symphony is pretty good, but I think Ecclesia's style fits Castlevania best. The soundtrack of Ecclesia is epic too! Especially "An Empty Tome" and "Chapel Hidden in Smoke". And of course, like I said before, I LOVE Shanoa! It is one of my favorite video game characters. Though it is still hard for me to pick a favorite between OoE and AoS, as I really like both games.

Samuel Lopes don't get me started with the music. Fucking loved OoE. The one thing I did like a lot about AoS was the what if ending probably one of the coolest scenarios I've seen in that game and they do it again in DoS it would be great if they played with that idea.

One of my best friends had this game back in the day. If you had EGM and read it religiously, you knew of this game, and I'm pretty sure they even reviewed it (with very, very good scores). And one thing about the Turbo Duo (later just the Duo) is that Turbo Technologies was a company in a lot of trouble, and they did whatever they could to try and sell Duos, including actively encouraging import gaming. Turbo Technologies actually told my friend stuff like which adapter to buy for Japanese HuCards and where to call to buy Rondo of Blood mail order. I even borrowed the game from my friend once just so I could dub the awesome CD music to cassette. :P

I think it's the hardest Castlevania, but the really hard part is to find all the paths, and then there are a couple of moments near to impossible: like the statues part with medusa heads (if you've found that path, you know what i mean). +Mr. Atarri 2600 - Alternate Routes, More Bosses, Item Crash (Super), More Challenging, Multiple Endings, and lastly, "Maria Renard". It's a classic Castlevania done right, it's perfect. Compared to Super Castlevania IV, Rondo of Blood was way more challenging without the 8 directional attacks, and I don't think people even use the sub-weapons in "Super Castlevania IV", cause Simon was to OP with just the whip, and it made the game too easy to beat... I didn't feel any challenge which the Castlevania games are known for.
@Mr.Atari2600
@Mr.Atari2600 6 жыл бұрын
I mean being able to whip in 8 different directions, Smoother Controls, Sub Weapons still usable imo. The Dagger can hit in long ranges, Crosses can hit enemies multiple times, Axes can hit enemies that are way above you, Holy Water can hit enemies way below you, Being able to Moonwalk on Stairs, Crouch Walk. There's hooks where you can swing with. + imo, Super Castlevania lV has the best atmosphere than any Castlevania game. while yes it did made the game a bit easier (for the most part) but I'd say it made the game more fair unlike the Brutal difficulty the previous Castlevania games made. I'd say Super Castlevania lV would be a great game to start off with if you're new to the Castlevania series. Then I would try the other ones.

Rondo of Blood is a damn hard game at times (but a good one). I feel like there are not enough lives for the long levels. For those wondering, with some effort you can find emulators for TurboCD/PC Engine CD. But not only can you find the original PC Engine game in Japanese. So fans actually translated the game and have a patch that replaces the sound and text files from the PSP version. So you play Rondo of Blood as it was meant too just with English instead of Japanese. Still that same German intro for some reason, guess it was thing for story.

T.C. Callaway Excellent! Thank you for your honest and enlightening answer. Actually, I've played both SCIV and ROB, although I must admit I play SCIV on the SNES and ROB on the PSVita (unlocked from the Dracula X Chronicles PSP game). I'm stuck in stage 4 in ROB and stuck in stage 5 on SCIV. I beat SCIV when I was a kid, but right now I can't... maybe I just don't care about video games as I used to so I don't push myself harder. But not caring as much is not synonymous to not playing as much. I play Castlevania a lot. I asked you why you think the game is better and you gave me a very good answer, but I must admit that I don't go that deep into games as to feel it that way. Honestly, ROB frustrates me most of the time for the same reasons you consider it to be the best game. I hate that enemies ALWAYS seem to know what your strategy is, while in SCIV I know that when I fail is because I was being stupid. Music on both is great, too. And I say this just to point out that SCIV has one of the best Castlevania OSTs (in my opinion) and that automatically bumps it to my top 5 favorite CV games of all time. Perhaps in time I'll learn to appreciate the challenge and to appreciate actually getting better as a gamer. But right now I just want to plow through the fucking game and it won't let me, an that's why it gets the second spot in my top 5: 1 SCIV 2 ROB 3 POR 4 SOTN 5 AOS I know it's a weird list, but that's just how I feel about those games. Although, being a lover of the originals (but hating their cheap difficulty), the distance from spot 2 to spot 3 is larger than the distance from spot 10 to 3. Take care. Thank you. Best regards.
