I worked on a cruise ship as a youth staff…around dusk saw two teenagers doing handstands off the railing of the top track level and ran over to them to stop them. One guy told me “what? it’s just water if I fall.” I told him you could break bones this far up and 2nd this ship can’t just stop to find you and what if it circles the wrong way and you get crushed or sucked under?? They look stunned. Anyway, I marched these kids to my manager. He called their parents and his dad cried when he found out and confronted his kid. I feel happy to know I possibly stopped a tragedy from happening that night.

That is very scary. Surrounded by nothingness and dark and coldness. Not knowing whats alive around you and nothing to defend yourself. That is torture. We don’t know what lives below the ocean. I am an Operation Specialist in the U.S. Navy and I’m trained to find a person who fell or have jumped overboard. To turn around to find that person’s location could take up to 45 minutes or more..by that time, that person might have gotten sucked under and chopped up by the propeller, died upon impact with the water, eaten by sea creatures, or suffered form hypothermia, to name a few. Majority of the times, the person is never found.

It should be pretty simple if you know about what time the fell off with ocean currents info n then search that area. My very first cruise was when my mom got married on the cruise, I was a young adult so I drank a little too much and woke up the next morning in my mother's room, yes on her honeymoon night i crashed them. I found out, id slept walked across the ENTIRE SHIP n knocked on their door and crawled in their bed, our room was on the opposite side of the ship. It terrified me so much bc I've never slept walked ever, I never drank again on any cruise! And in 2012 I quit drinking all together

You can't just inadvertently fall off a cruise ship. People are either drunk, want to end their lives, get pushed off, or horse playing and fall off. Either way, you'll probably die because those ships are so large that they can't stop. Take it seriously, people. Cruise responsibly.

Nothing would convince me to go on one of those cruise ships. Ever. In August 1969 I emigrated to Canada from the U.K. on a liner called The Empress of England. I'm terrified of the ocean, can't swim and hate deep water. I remember enjoying the voyage until I was on the top deck looking around and realizing how vulnerable our ship was, nothing around us in all directions but endless water!! I once gave a ride to the captain of a very large cruise ship. He is on that ship for 6 - 9 months each year, touring the Caribbean and South-east Asia. He said on average 1 - 2 people go missing on each tour. Normally they notice when someone repeatedly does not show up for meals, then they go looking for him. Sometimes they find a s**cide note in the cabin, sometimes not. THEY DON'T EVEN LOOK FOR THEM ! Because he said the ocean is too vast, the chances of finding a person are so slim it's not worth it. There was a moment of silence in the car when he said that. I assume / I hope that they still stop when there are witnesses who see the person jump overboard. But when they find out days later that a person is gone, it's probably too late anyway.

I had a friend several years ago who died after falling off the side of a cruise ship. It was docked in Boston Harbor, having a concert/party on board. My friend, drunk and stupid, got into an argument with his girlfriend. We've never got a straight answer about how he ended up overboard but her story was that he climbed over the railing and was trying to climb up or down to the next railing when he fell. His body was found almost a week later. Terribly sad, he was a great guy, but he did in fact do something incredibly stupid which ended up costing him his life.

@JASMIYA💋 exactly! We would do this prank where we would catch people staring into the waves and imagining the terror of falling in then jump up behind them and hug them from the back, and they would always cling super tight to the bars. That only happens because everyone is naturally very scared of falling in when you notice how scary the ocean is!

I was on a cruise where a passenger jumped off from on of the higher decks, the thing is they decided to put on a life jacket before jumping. Because of the life jacket the impact with the water was soo severe they actually died. The ship was docked at one of our ports of call and while we were having breakfast ready to go off on the island, we could see the body floating around in the water beside the ship. They ended up lowering one of the dinghies to go pick up the body and was stored in the ship’s morgue until returning to the home port in Miami. I heard rumours on board that this man was fighting with his wife all trip and finally got into a serious fight with his wife and threatened to jump overboard and he actually did it. I don’t know if thats 100% true because they tried to cover it up as much as possible to avoid ruining other passengers trips, but many passengers claimed to have seen this couple having some pretty nasty arguments all around the ship *Another story* I know a young family that went on a cruise. A 3 year old child, the parents and also the grandfather. The parents went off to do something and left the child in the care of the grandfather. The grandfather took the child to the top deck to watch the ship sail away 16 decks up. The child was apparently complaining they couldn’t see anything and the grandfather lifted her up and held her on the railing. I don’t know what happened exactly but the child fell off the railing and all the way down into the water. The grandfather instantly went into a panic and told the workers of the ship and shortly they had the ship stopped. And they started looking around the ship for the little girl. Unfortunately when they found her body she was not alive. I can’t imagine what that grandfather felt after making that serious of a mistake, accidentally killing your own kids child. I have heard a few other stories but these were the most serious ones. The other stories I heard the people survived. But just soo you know jumping off the ship is not only seriously dangerous and stupid, if you survive or they manage to find you it will also get you arrested, charged and banned from any future cruises

I was watching an episode of "Evil Lives Here". This was one of the saddest things I have seen. This guy who was telling the story was the son of a serial killer growing up. When he was 15 years old, the father decided to leave the US because the cops were suspicious about his last murder. So he took his two sons to Belize, bought a sail boat and took tourists to different locations which could take a few days or a week crossing the ocean. This couple from England had just graduated college, she was an attorney and he was a doctor. But before they started their careers, they wanted to take six months and backpack across several countries. Unfortunately, they ran into this serial killer and his two sons. When they got out to sea, the serial killer hit the guy over the head as he was pulling up the anchor. The girl was in the cabin and saw the scuffle on deck and ran up. The serial killer pulls a knife, then ties their ankles together and ties their wrists and puts bags over their heads. He tells them that he's not going to kill them but let them go when they get close to land by throwing them overboard in knee deep water where they will be able to stand up. Instead he turns the boat around and heads out to the middle of nowhere where he throws them both overboard. The guy telling the story who was 15 at the time said he wanted to save them but what could he do? He's out in the middle of the ocean with his dad a serial killer and he had no doubt that his dad would have killed him and his younger brother too. He said they watched the bubble come up, then stop and after three minutes as the serial killer is looking at his watch says " they're dead". And that was it. They were so young and such a good looking couple who had a great future ahead of them. Their bodies washed up on shore three days later but went unidentified for 30 years until the son was able to finally get the authorities to listen to him about what his father did to them on that fateful day. The episode was called something like "Out To Sea". You can never be too careful when going to a remote place with a stranger. But who would have thought when you see the Dad with two young sons, he was a great manipulator and all of his murders were money motivated.

Always interesting hearing about survivors who go in off aircraft carriers and survive. Heard a story of a guy who was in the Indian Ocean for three days but survived and was rescued. Training is everything

There was a man PUSHED off by his angry wife on my latest Bahama Cruise. Apparently she wasn’t happy with his casino loss. They arrested her in Freeport and he went home in a body bag. We heard him hit the Deck below after hitting a suspended life boat from their balcony. Remember that alcohol, bank accounts, casinos and relationships sometimes apparently don’t mix for some passengers! Now we can’t get the sound from our minds hearing that while trying to sleep and enjoy a vacation.

Rule of thumb. If you stay on a cruise ship. Please, please, please keep your a$$ in your room at night, order a giant lobster with sweet butter with steamed broccoli, use your remote and flip through cable channels in your room.

Went on a cruise ship went on top to the golf course and the wind was blowing crazy and powerful out in the middle of the ocean I grabbed my sister and got back down inside. Cruise ships should eliminate that because that wind could easily snatch someone off that ship especially a younger or smaller person. I’m 5’10 225 I felt the tug and got me my sister from up there. Them ships move at a pretty high clip plus the wind from the ocean definitely not a safe place to be for drunk person or unaware people.

I have been in several cruise ships. The way they are designed there is no way possible the wind could " snatch someone up and throw them overboard " its not possible . Even if it is very windy . Also if they think it is that windy they will shut down activities like that to eliminate any " danger " .

So, do you understand, why that isn’t possible? That a gust of wind is never going to take you up and toss you? I mean, if not, how would you explain the golf ball not just rolling off, or being taken by a gust. It’s much smaller than you or your sister. I could go on, giving examples of things, but unless you can grasp the basic science, of why it won’t happen, it’s pointless.

And the worst part is the fact that some cruise lines don’t limit the amount one can drink. I was recently on a cruise where there was no limit. They even allowed people to order two drinks with each card scan/swipe. I feel that that could be very dangerous. Especially when the bars make their drinks with a lot of liquor. They just add sweeteners so you don’t taste it. Luckily there were no people jumping or falling overboard, as far as I know.

If I plan on getting wasted on a cruise ship I’m going to wear one of those lifejackets under my shirt that inflates when submerged underwater and have some kind of bright beacon light on a lanyard around my neck. Maybe even a have a backpack with an inflatable life raft and air pump inside. Not taking any chances! Well except for being black out drunk in the middle of the ocean 200 feet in the air on the top deck with a low railing.

While serving aboard the USS Iwo Jima in the Marines back in the late 80's, myself and best friend Sgt. Davis were blown overboard when a AV-8B Harrier turned on us. (the exhaust blasted us over before we knew what happened). Luck for us, it was in the middle of day ops, and crystal clear, blue, fairly warm Mediterranean waters. Our green squadron maint. vest were easy to spot but it still took almost 3 hours before we were plucked from the drink. What's crazy is we had birds in the air already but they sent the Navy's UH-1N, that's used for this type of thing. We joked for years that our own squadron couldn't be bothered to pick us up, they were just too busy at the time...lol.

I saw a kid jump off a cruise ship on a dare. The video was circulating on Twitter. He must have been on drugs and alcohol I can’t conceive any other way that anyone in their right mind would do something so dumb. He jumped unknowingly into heavily shark infested waters at night time. They never even found a body, and after he jumped you can hear people laughing and joking about it. If only someone had the sense to stop him.
