This adventure is exactly what I love to see in a one shot game. I DM a lot and this has given me a lot of inspiration
@ssfbob4562 жыл бұрын
The first game I DM'd ultimately ended really badly. Looking back, there were a lot of red flags, mostly around one player in particular, but I didn't see it at the time and after everything collapsed he did a good job of making me feel like everything that went down was on me. It wasn't till about a year later, I was a player in another game, and our DM had a bunch of exams coming up and didn't have time to set up a game. So I tentatively offered to run a high level one shot for him and the other players, and before long I was starting to see how much I really wasn't enjoying the game that fell apart, because that one shot was a blast. That's when I started realizing how bad that player made things, because my new ones did everything the opposite. I'm still a player in that group, and we play every other week, with me DMing for a group that two of those players are in on the opposite weeks.

The "D4 damage dice dagger" is one of D&D's larger offenses against weapons realism. A weapon doesn't have to be huge to be hugely lethal, and in medieval times the dagger was one of the deadliest personal-scale weapons (ie. not siege equipment) around _precisely because it's so small._ It made it easy to maneuver in between plates of armor to get at unprotected spaces. When it's long enough to push in and hit a vital organ, that's really all that's needed!
@Kyzen_Wrell2 жыл бұрын
Probably why the damage is so low, because you HAVE to get close enough to do the damage, and you HAVE to hit a vital organ for it to be lethal. Also I think it has to do with the fact daggers are typically 1-handed weapons. That’s my theory anyway.
@letsplaysvonaja17142 жыл бұрын
Well, daggers are also the favored rogue sneak attack weapon So their damage potential can be considered much higher than 1d4 Meanwhile it's also the preferred weapon of casters, aka people who suck at melee, so it's low damage potential is perfectly accurate

Thats why poisons are sought-after, like blow gun darts. I usually try to make necrosis or paralyzing effects on damage or make chilly powder bombs(easy and cost effective).
@hackcubit96632 жыл бұрын
I think the small damage die may be more to compensate for the fact that when you're in open combat, you're not getting kidney stabs in at your opponent, you're slicing half-wildly, trying to make cuts at your opponent without leaving yourself open to the enemy's counterattack. Granted I'm also going off the assumption that even in 3.5, the average NPC only had a few hit points, meaning it would only take one or two hits from a dagger to kill them. Extra hit points can be a great abstraction on "I don't have more vital organs, I'm just better at dodging, rolling with the 'punches,' and otherwise doing things to turn a potentially lethal blow into something survivable."
@Yroko2 жыл бұрын
@@hackcubit9663 i would also rule custom weapon attributes, ie a spiked shield when shoving roll to hit and see if the spike hits dead on as u shove. Or u get a simple +1 to hit as ur dagger can easily slide between the plates or small openings in the armor

Same here. Yeah, I've kinda fallen out of this genre of video, cuz it's so oversaturated with problematic DM or player stories. The YT algorithm has noticed & adjusted my recommendations too.

@@twig8523 What I mean is, plenty of channels do the D&D Horror story, when I found this one it was a 3 part story about Onyxia the dragon, and Ashtoshan, the gray necromancer. Postive, heart warming, reaffirming stories of what RP should be. It seems the channel has moved in with the other Horror crowds of late..and I... was speaking out against that. If I wanted Horror stories, I go to Crit crab ect. I want a channel that...basically just keeps things... Positive.

So I’ve only started dming very recently, although I had watch/had a lot of interest in dnd in vernal before hand. I dmed the beginners group that I started in a few months before hand. It’s great seeing new players have the “I can do that” realisation and introduce some new ideas that you just have the “that’s both really epic and stupid, please do it” reaction to. However, I had gotten stuck with the same sorta group (we have multiple groups who are usually divided into similar levelled ppl) of people for a couple weeks in a row. These guys I was dming for are great and lots of fun but they are very exhausting and I was feeling a bit ruffed about having them about 7 weeks in a row. The week before I was dming 7 people, with all of the usuals, my choice but it was a definitely mistake and left me deflated. This week I was offered another group of newer players and I chose to dm for them instead. These guys were very different. All 30 year old builders, friends of one of the other older players and just did stuff differently. They weren’t necessarily more fun, but they were refreshing. And after the session they complimented my dming saying they really liked it and that felt so good. I’m the kind of person who thinks my mates will be purely nice rather than slightly honest and combine that with my “ahhhh my players are all bored, I’m doing terrible” ect, means that I usually don’t feel great about my skills regardless of what my mates say. But these guys, who owe me nothing, complimenting me and their style of play, just made me fall in love with the game all over again.

All I can say is likely what the players of that session were likely thinking at the end. "Curse you cliffhanging DM!" lol

Hey so I’m new to D&D, but I would like to try my hand at DMing, I have an idea for a world and would prefer more RP over combat with a play by post system. If anyones interested let me know.

Small tipp, do not, never ever, start with a campaign. You pressure yourself. Be very clear that you prepare a one shot first. You will thank me later.

There are players, especially DMs, who would consider me weak for saying that the kind of hijinks like this story is exactly what I like to see in my games, to the point that I try very deliberately to make sure that there are plenty of objects in each encounter that creative characters can use, like barrels for either cover or for rolling at enemies, and I once had a fight on a dock include a small crane whose controls were in easy reach if the players wanted to try and use it to their advantage.

I kind of have a similar experience, but mine was mostly insecurity opposed to burn out. My players were hunting down members of the Dragon cult, I know real original; the plan, rescue, the MPC who would give them treasures and Lore to continue the story. What happened was this glorious bastard that I called one of my best friends the bar decided, I’m gonna adopt her. We’re taking her back to the city and we’re gonna get her medically checked out… Your, you’re doing what? Fast-forward a few weeks and I stumble across steel dragons and the rest is history.

when I was DMing I preferred outdoor / sea over city/dungeon adventures for outdoor / sea can hit party up/down left/right front/back, city 2 main types thieves/city guard, Dungeons mainly front/back with some traps.

I've been consistently game mastering since 2012, and have taken very little breaks besides the occasional short run campaign that usually lasts no more than a couple months. I find it hard more often than not these days to get motivated for running a campaign without thinking of all of the negative behaviors my players bring to the table as well as my own I legitimately feel so I'm stuck in a really bad rut.
