I love this movie. It takes place after the first 65 episodes of the original Transformers cartoon, 20 years in the future. Those Autobots were main cast members and were killed off since their toys were discontinued. Spike, the father in this movie was a teenager in the original cartoon and the live action movies called him Sam. The reason they transform into Earth objects and vehicles is explained in the early comics as disguise when they first come to Earth based on what their ship's computer thought was the dominate life form of the planet. Later choices, like the Dinobots, were built because Optimus Prime thought having powerful dinosaurs on their side would be useful.

It was a hell of a thing to see characters you'd been watching on TV after school for years get casually & brutally obliterated. "Prime!" "One shall stand, one shall fall." "Why throw away your life so recklessly?" "That's a question you should ask yourself, Megatron." Fun Fact: The Blu-Ray special edition of this movie features an audio commentary by Nelson Shin (director), Flint Dille (story consultant), and Susan Blu (voice of Arcee). Final Bow Fact: This was Orson Welles' final film before his death on October 10, 1985 at the age of 70. He recorded his lines five days prior, on October 5. This was Scatman Crothers' final film before his death on November 22, 1986 at age 76. Final Countdown Fact: At the movie's beginning, when the Autobots are taking off on their ship, Optimus Prime (Peter Cullen) orders Cliffjumper for a countdown. Cliffjumper was voiced by Casey Kasem, who was the host of America's Top 40 Countdown for many years. This was obviously a little joke added by the writers, considering we didn't need to hear a shuttle countdown, and any character could have done this. Arcee's Journey Facts: One of the original demands of the Transformers toyline and cartoon series was that no female Transformers could appear, as the toys were marketed strictly towards boys. However, writer Ron Friedman fought hard to include female robots in the Transformers lore, as his daughter was a huge fan of the franchise. This led to the creation of Arcee (Susan Blu), a female Autobot debuting in this movie, as well as a number of other female characters introduced during season 2 of The Transformers (1984). Ironically, despite being one of the movie's feature characters, no toy of Arcee was produced during the entirety of the original Transformers line, though at least one rejected prototype was designed. Arcee became the most famous female character in the Transformers brand and numerous incarnations of her appeared in various other cartoons, comics, movies and toy series, but it was only in 2014, 28 years after her introduction, that Hasbro finally released a toy based on this movie's design.

"Why do they turn into what they do?" Real World - Because the toys came first and the story was created to fit them. The original Transformers were made up from two separate transforming toylines that Hasbro imported from Japan and rebranded as "The Transformers". The first was "Diaclone" which were most of the vehicles, Dinobots and Insecticons - they were all designed to be mechs and had little compartments where a tiny plastic pilot could sit. The second was "Micro Change" which were intended to be tiny alien robots who disguise themselves as 1:1 scale objects you might find around the house - Gun (Megatron), Micro Cassette Recorder (Soundwave/Blaster) with micro cassettes, Microscope (Perceptor), Penny Racers (Bumblebee/Cliffjumper), etc. In Universe - Because they are "Robots in Disguise", and to quote one of the characters from the show "Besides, it sure beats walking". In the first episode, when the original Transformers crashed on earth they were all damaged, so as their ship repaired them it scanned the nearby area in 1984 to find new forms for them to transform into to help blend in and adapt to the new environment (the ship may even have mistaken these machines for the local life forms, given that it came from a planet of living machines). So their earth transformations are rather random, but they all make full use of what they were given.

Yeah, and apparently it took the toy execs quite by surprise when the movie came out and kids were upset about the characters being killed. They just thought of them as products, and they thought that killing off all the old toys and promoting a bunch of new ones would make kids set aside their old ones and demand their parents buy them new ones. The thought that kids would actually identify with and have formed emotional attachments with them as characters literally never even crossed their minds. The animated series they'd been producing for the last couple of years was never meant to tell compelling stories or feature relatable, interesting characters; they were literally nothing but extended toy commercials to them.

One major note about this film: it was meant by Hasbro to be a sendoff to all the toy models they were discontinuing (Like Prowl, Ratchet, Ironhide, Wheeljack, Brawn etc) by killing them off in the cartoon continuity so they could introduce the new lines including Hot Rod, Springer, Wheelie, Galvatron, etc. They hadn't counted on the fact that the series was so good that kids across the nation had become attached to many of these characters, most notably Optimus Prime, and were absolutely bombarded with angry letters from parents after this movie because of Prime's death, so ultimately they decided to bring him back in a later season of the show (season 3 IIRC). The planet that Unicron ate at the start is called Lithone, and the transforming robots there (unknown if any relation to Cybertron) would supply both sides of the war with medical supplies. Jazz and Cliffjumper are voiced by the iconic Scatman Crothers and Casey Kasem. Blurr is voiced by John Moschitta, an iconic fast-talker from the 80's who is famous for the Micro Machines commericals back then. Hot Rod is voiced by Judd Nelson, who was also John Bender in The Breakfast Club. Additionally, Peter Cullen voices another Autobot, Ironhide, he just does him with a southern twang :P The voice of Megatron, Frank Welker, also voices Fred Jones from Scooby-Doo, Ray Stantz and Slimer in The Real Ghostbusters cartoon, and so many more, and personally I like his rendition the best because I feel like Megatron has a more sinister, megalomaniacal bent to him, and later iterations of the Megatron voice are more brutish and bestial and I don't like it. Galvatron's voice actor for the film is Leonard Nimoy. In the later seasons of the G1 show it was Frank Welker who took over once more, with a different twist to the voice of course. Daniel Witwicky is the character for all of us kids back then who was our self-insert, so we could be like "Man, if I were Daniel I'd kick some ass too!" Kup is named Kup because he's a picKUP truck :P albeit a Cybertronian one. The Sharkticons are the servants of the Quintessons (the five-faced dudes), who are the creators of Cybertron and the Autobots and Decepticons (the former being laborers and the latter being gladiators). Springer, Blitzwing, and Astrotrain are the first Triple-changers, who have two vehicle modes as well as their robot mode. I had Blitzwing as a kid and he was super fun to play with There also IS an alligator transformer, a G1 Predacon named Megalligator. No relation to Megatron Those aren't VHS tapes, they're audio cassettes that were played in tape decks. Blaster (a ghetto blaster aka boombox) and Soundwave (a Walkman tape deck) had a whole cadre of each. The ones shown here are Rumble, Frenzy, Ravage, and Ratbat for the Decepticons, and Eject, Rewind, Ramhorn, and Steeljaw for the Autobots. And of course they looked like 80's technology. They're Robots _in disguise_ , that's the whole point :P The Dinobots were built by Ratchet and Wheeljack after the latter had found data on Earth's fossil record and thought that modeling new robots on those great lizards would add their great strength to the Autobots' cause. They proved too willful and hard to control, though, resentful of being the Autobots 'big stick' and then ignored the rest of the time. Grimlock stated that he would fight only when _he_ chose to, and they fucked off to some deserted island with live dinosaurs still on it, heh. Their names are Grimlock, Slag, Sludge, Snarl, and Swoop. Devastator was the first of the Combiners, a gestalt robot form made up of the Constructicons: Hook, Bonecrusher, Long Haul, Mixmaster, Scrapper, and Scavenger. Before the war, they had helped build the Crystal City on Cybertron, along with their friend Omega Supreme, who became the protector of the city. During the war before the flight to Earth, however, the Constructicons merged into Devastator, a mindless force of destruction (ironic that they had to give up their creative intellects to form a brute beast), who went on a rampage and destroyed the Crystal City while Omega Supreme was tricked into leaving it. When he found out, Omega swore an undying vengeance upon Devastator, and will ally with the Autobots if it means it will bring him closer to exacting justice on his former friends.

There was also the non-transforming Action Master Krok who had an alligator companion and was retconned into having a crocodile altmode (and being a headmaster) in the Titans Return toyline. Megalligator is the Japanese release of the original green crocodile Megatron Beast Wars toy, but as a different character from both G1 and BW Megatron. And yes, according to the American 2-pack's pack-in comic lore (before the TV show made them the originals' descendants), Beast Wars Megatron (gator) and Optimus Primal (bat) were in fact the original characters in new forms.

The Killing of Optimus Prime is a cautionary tale: Take care of your beloved fictional characters. While there are benefits in killing Prime in terms of story telling, the reality is that Hasbro got rid of him just to make way to sell new toys (I feel like Dinobot’s death in Beast Wars was handled a bit better imo). So in the transformers Generation 1 continuity, the Autobots and Decepticons crash landed on Earth in prehistoric times and were all knocked offline until sometime in the early 80s an earthquake reactivated the computer of the crashed ship. to repair and bring all the Cybertronians back on line, the computer sent out a probe to scan for things that could be made into appropriate alt modes for each robot, trying to find close matches for their previous alt modes they had on Cybertron. Soundwave had been an espionage specialist, so the probe found a local primitive audio recording device and gave him that as an alt mode. The Dinobots came later, when the Autobots wanted to create additional robots to fill their ranks, and decided to model them on fossils found at their ship's crash site.

Also in the comics, the Matrix of leadership was originally the source code of the first transformer to become sentient/self aware and thus could be used as a shortcut to make any new robots built truly alive by jump starting their AI. Added to and developed over time, it was the most advanced program they had and thus was able to hack Unicrons programming to self destruct.

The original Transformers cartoon debuted in 1984. This movie came out in 1986 and is essentially season 2.5, despite there being a 20 year timeskip. The purpose of the cartoon was to sell toys. Hasbro wanted to get rid of the 1984 and 1985 released characters to make way for the 1986 and 1987 releases, but what they didn't realize the cartoon had taken on a life of it's own. Kids were buying the toys of their favorite cartoon characters rather than seeing their favorite toys on television. Optimus Prime's death was a HUGE blow that traumatized thousands of kids. You'll hear stories about kids having to leave because they were crying so much, which were true. When I saw this movie in the theater, I still cannot to this day remember any of it after Optimus's death. That's how hard it hit me. Fact: Peter Cullen, the voice actor of Optimus Prime, was told by his brother, a decorated Marine and Vietnam War veteran, that when voicing the character, he should "make him strong enough to be gentle".

Another related fact to this (not sure if mentioned below) - GiJoe had a similar animated movie made, and it ran on some similarities in plot - Duke one of the beloved leaders was supposed to die in it (and based upon what you see in the animation, it alludes to it) -- however because of the SHEER force of reaction to the Optimus Prime death in this movie... GiJoe plot-wise was changed to "Duke's in a coma" and they announce (audio-only) at the end that he makes a full recovery.

@@daves6554 Yeah, G.I. Joe was marketed towards a slightly older demographic than Transformers, the 10-12 age group vs the 6-8. Even though G.I. Joe had no fatalities, you still saw people get injured to point out war isn't a game. The original script always called for Duke to die, but the Joe movie was delayed in production so Transformers came out before it. After the backlash from Transformers, the script was changed so Duke survived.

Ollie, my man, I saw this movie in theaters back when it released. I was 19 at the time. You are correct, there was indeed a tv show. The Movie was set between seasons 2 and 3, and there was a time jump between season 2 and the movie. Like the series, the movie was basically a story based advertisement for the toys. I had most of them, as well. But when Optimus died in the movie, every kid in the theater I was in was crying their eyes out, and parents ended up taking them home before the end of the movie. The theater I was in was packed when the movie started, but half of the audience left not long after Optimus' death scene. Also, this soundtrack is an absolute BANGER from start to finish. I have bought this movie in every format it released on, including VHS, DVD, Blu-Ray, and Digital. I listen to the soundtrack quite often, and I honestly consider it to be the best soundtrack of any movie ever made. There is one thing I have to correct you on, though. Soundwave and Blaster's cassettes are actually audio cassettes, not VHS tapes. They are able to record video, but they do that digitally. Remember, the cassette form is simply their disguise, not their function. Lastly, there was such an outcry by angry parents that the producers of the show had to resurrect Optimus Prime in season 3, in a multi-part episode titled "Dark Awakening", and "The Return of Optimus Prime".

Having first watched the first 2 seasons of the show and grown to love Optimus, Ironhide, Prowl, Ratchet, Brawn, Wheeljack etc. it was truly devastating to see them killed in the movie! By the way, 'More than meets the eye' is the 3 part first story of season 1 of the Transformers cartoon and explains how they got to Earth and how they got their transform modes. Its worth a watch - the animation is similar just not as detailed, with less shadowing. Also, several episodes of the series also explain the origin of the Dinobots and how they came to be, that would certainly answer your question about them! The in-universe explanation for their alternate forms is that the first transformers to arrive on Earth were damaged in a ship crash, and their automated repair system scanned the local environment for points of reference, hence trucks, cars, guns, tape decks, fighter jets, etc. The Dinobots were an experiment built on earth after Wheeljack was looking at dinosaur fossils. Some of the later additions to the show, however, they basically just skipped over the explanation. (The Constructicons even had multiple back stories.)

As others have pointed out, all the characters that either died or got reformatted were all the main characters of the TV series. The _reason_ they were killed off was so they could do a new series with all new characters. Hot Rod (Rodimus Prime), Kup, Springer, etc, these were all brand new toys they wanted to market. Bumblebee and Jazz survived the transition because they were fan favorites, and the backlash to Optimus’ death so was severe they brought him back in the very next season.

A few things which many people don't know because they aren't aware of the fact this movie in fact was canon to the original TV show: you mentioned already that Unicron at the end was blind. This in fact got picked up in the third season of the cartoon series, which tkes place after the movie. Unicrons head became a moon for cybertron, and he partially came back to life, and tried to construct a new body for himself, starting with replacements for his eyes. The same episode revealed another wild thing: One of the few survivors of the movie. Starscream was revealed in season 3 to be immortal. Because, back then, Transformers was part of Marvel comics as well, and Starscream was implied to have been a cybertronian mutant. Mutant as in X-men like mutant, with his powers being that his "spark" (basically his soul) would never leave the mortal realm, and even granted him the ability to take over the bodies of weak minded Cybertronians. This way he became the one tasked by Unicron to gather him replacement parts, and waaaaay later down the line Strscream not only re-appeared in the sequel series "Transformers: Beast Wars", his immortality became part of the plot, where-in scientists tried to find out how his powers worked, and one result of this was the villain named Rampage, who was essentially a villain version fo the Hulk.

In a nutshell: Hasbro & the movie writers didn’t realize how attached kids had become to the show characters, they were just looking to eliminate the old toy product line and introduce new toys to sell. Because of children’s TV standards, NO ONE died on the show, so seeing 4 characters die within the first 10 minutes was jarring. Then Optimus dying resulted in angry parents walking out because their kids were traumatized, and a letter-writing campaign led to Optimus being resurrected later in the show. The reaction to Prime’s death also led to a change in GI Joe: The Movie, to avoid a similar backlash. GI Joe’s field commander Duke was supposed to die, but dialogue was added at the last minute saying that he went into a coma instead and came out of it at the end.

The Killing of Optimus Prime and crew is a cautionary tale: Take care of your beloved fictional characters. While there are benefits in killing Prime in terms of story telling, the reality is that Hasbro got rid of him just to make way to sell new toys. I'm sure it's been mentioned several times but this followed the first 2 seasons of the show. The first 2 took place in what was present day at the time (mid 80s). Then there was a time jump for the movie and the seasons that followed. Most of the characters that were killed off from both sides were main characters on the show and their toys sold very well initially but then stopped selling because anyone that wanted them already had them by this point. So the time jump and the purge acted as a soft reboot so they could feature new characters and sell more toys. Aside from the Dinobots, Soundwave and his cassettes and the Constructicons (and maybe a few more), most of the characters featured after the first act were brand new for the movie. Spike is basically Sam from the Bay movies. Even has the same last name. He was a teen during the first 2 seasons. He and his dad were main characters. I don't think we ever met his mother but if she ever made an appearance I'm sure she wasn't as annoying as she was in the Bay movies. I don't believe Spike's dad, Sparkplug, was ever mentioned after season 2. Fans were left to fill in the blanks however they wished. Maybe he died, maybe he was old and senile or whatever.

The Dinobots were never the sharpest tool in the shed, however , the Movie and season 3 of Gen One, which took place after the Movie, made them comic relief and tuned down their power levels. The Dinobots were used by the Autobots as a last resort and the Decepticons feared them. In fact they could beat Devastator in the show and at worse fight it to a stand still. I do feel the Dinobots were done dirty here and in season 3. And to answer your question on the 'bots that died, yes most , if not all were main Autobots. Heck Wheeljack, who was one of the bodies Arcee was dragging into the building , was originally no meant to die. In fact in an early draft of the script, him and Arcee were to but heads throughout the movie, until they finally became a couple . Which is funny, as the movie hints greatly at a Arcee Hot Rod relationship, however that is then dropped in season 3 for Arcee and Springer. Another note, the Movie was meant to be more brutal then it is. Brawn, the first Autobot to die, was meant to have been blown in half, instead of the shot to the shoulder. Ultra Magnus was meant to have been ripped apart by the Sweeps using laser ropes , and that can still be seen in the finished movie in the form of continuous beams from the Sweeps. Heck the Decepticon that that orders the Decepticons to Scramble was toy boarded to be crushed to death by Unicron.

In-Universe reason for the vehicles, planes and cassttes: when their ship originally crashed on Earth (carrying both Megatron adn Optimus, as well as many others), the ship procceeded to scan Earth vehicles, comms devices, etc. just to make sure they could hide among stuff of Earth as it repaired them. Back in Cybertron, Bumblebee was a tiny UFO, and the Wolkswagen beetle was the closest thing to his alt-mode. Starscream was a tetrajet (similar to the ones in the Bumblebee movie intro) and so on. The Dinobots are just a result of young Spyke (still a teenager in season 2) taking Bumblebee and Autobot scientist Wheeljack (killed in this movie, you can see his corpse in Autobot city) to a museum and explaining dinosaurs to them. And nobody knows about the Insecticons....

The in-universe reason they transform into cars and such is because in the first episode we see they actually have sci-fi forms on Cybertron but when they end up on Earth their alt-forms are updated to local tech by the ship's computer, Teletraan 1, to blend in. The Dinobots were a later addition and have their own origins and generally the canon was pretty fast and loose back in the day.

Many of the kids shows in the 80's were made for toy sales, when it was time to release a whole new set, someone decided it would be a good idea to kill off the last set. A lot of kids cried at this movie.

Dude, those weren't VHS tapes, they were audio cassettes; and they transformed into those things to be able to hide in that era. Also, there was 2 to 3 years of cartoons before the movie that made us all fall in love with the characters before they crushed our hearts with this epic movie

Megatron is voiced by Frank Welker, who was also the voice of Fred from Scooby Doo. When Megatron is reformatted, his voice as Galvatron is done by Leonard Nimoy.

I watched this as a kid when it came out, and it’s a joy to relive it through the eyes of someone who’s never seen it before. Also - between this movie and Mr. Hooper from Sesame Street - these shows taught us about death and how unexpected and pointless it can be. And it hit hard, especially with Optimus’ death (though I loved all the other characters they unceremoniously killed off as well). I cried for days.

This was the start of a lot of 80s cartoon tropes. That moment after years when you see Spike grown up and in a power suit. 😆

Many of the Autobots and Deceptions killed in the movie were actual characters in the cartoon. They were killed because their toys weren't renewed for sale, so they had to be phased out.

this movie tramatized a generation, myself included. i didn't watch this movie again until i was a grown up. you see, hasbro, the company that released the toys, wanted to create a new line of transformers and decided the best way to do it and introduce kids to the new characters was to kill them off in this movie. what they totally didn't understand was kids like me loved the characters and were upset by seeing them getting killed. especially with optimus prime. for my generation, prime wasn't just a toy. he was a icon, a role model, and a father figure. so after the movie's release, the company was swamped with phone calls and letters from parents, who said their kids cried after seeing prime die and even left the movie early because of it. this was so impactful that it actually affected another of their properties, "G.I. joe". that cartoon was gonna have a movie coming out the following year and they had to re-write the story because one of the characters, duke, was originally suppose to die and they didn't want another repeat of what happened with transformers. so yeah, "transformers" showed that the show wasn't just a ad for toys.

Those were audio tapes not vhs. The reason they use such technology is because what today you see as old technology was actually state of the art technology in 1986 so it was obvious to integrate such tech in a more advanced imaginary enviroment... come on those audiotapes were transforming in to robots!!! That's where you see the hyper sci-fi element! No hints that you would need anything more advanced than tapes to manage data in 1986, since with audio tapes even in 1986 you could transfer actual computer data, so tapes were thought to be more integrated in the future, not extinct. That's the exact same reason you had tape storage technology on advanced starships in Star Trek generation one show.

This film remains iconic to this day because it really is one of a kind Never before or since has a children’s Saturday morning cartoon show so casually and brutally depicted the horrors of war Every body or casualty during the battle for autobot city are main characters we’d all seen for dozens or hundreds of episodes. The autobot on the shuttle to start were the main autobots besides Prime, Jazz, and Bumblebee. Ironhide was 2 and he got blasted point blank For me, I was a decepticon kid. My favorites were starscream and megatron so you can imagine my roller coaster ride emotionally that film early on

Something that doesn't get mentioned much about the gen1 TV show and the movie is that Spike was a kid in the show. To give newer viewers the time jump the movie was doing. Shia LaBeoufs character in the Bay movies is kinda of a mash up of Spike Witwicky and his father from the show.

There is a show before and after the movie. The events of the movie takes place 20 years after Season 2, and the five-part premiere of Season 3 is a follow up to the movie.
