DOI has more orange in the center of the shirt. Both have their place. It depends on what you’re wanting at the time. As for these shirts I like dye under ice. Like the green popping out more.

Love the comparison. I’ve always found that dye over ice has more randomness to the colors . Under ice the dye placement is more precise. Both of these turned out great!

I prefer the control of DUI for something like a spiral. I use both techniques often, I guess it depends on the tie. Scrunch dyes look good with DOI because of the watercolor effect. Great tutorial. Thanks! ❤️🌈

Both shirts are beautiful (as always!). I've used both methods and I guess I feel more confident about how the colors will land when doing DUI, but I love the organic watercolor feel that results in the DOI. Thanks so much for showing the differences - - always an inspiration!!!!

A valuable tutorial. So the question becomes (in general), do you want more color separation or more color blending? And you have provided the answers.

Correct. And, that generally falls based on the pattern you're working with. A scrunch generally looks better with DOI for a more organic/blended look, while patterns with more structure look better with DUI.

Thank you for this video. I'm pretty new to this type of textile work, but now I understand where you are coming from. I haven't been dyeing garments but large pieces of fabric (4 yards) where the blending is more desired. Also, I am learning that specific dyes are like WAY stronger than others. Lots of the purples and deep pinks and reds will take over everything if you use too much and ice over dye in that case is definitely the way to go because you have more control. I like making color gradients where one blends into the next. Do you have any advice on which of the yellows is strongest? I've used Lemon Yellow but it seems to get muted. I see the yellow you used is rather understated in both examples. I think both of you examples are beautiful in their own way. Maybe next time I'll try to mix it up and directly place the dye under the ice where I want a stronger result and do the other part above.

All of the yellow dyes are going to be "weak" compared to the blue/red dyes. The trick with yellow is to either exaggerate the area used for the yellow dye -- using an area that's twice as wide as that of the other colors around it, use a white gap between the yellow dye and the other colors, or use a thickened liquid yellow. All of those options have their downsides; but, I generally go with an exaggerated area with DUI or thickened if I'm going with liquids.

Yes. I do that pretty routinely with incline dyes.
