This was great! I had to look at the two several times to decide what I liked. Ice dye wins! It is more unique. I love how you responded to each person's question. Your answers were also very helpful. Thanks for a great video and tutorial!

I've just watched two of your difference videos, which were great right up until the end. I wish you'd have finished off with a discussion of the differences, and what made the difference. Obviously both shirts are drastically different, but you assume we know why. And it doesn't help to say "one is liquid dye and the other is ice." I'm sure you have more information to share, and I'd love to hear it.

Two questions: do you reuse your sinew? You've inspired me to start using it, I'm getting really nice tight folds and better "rays", although I'm still learning how to keep it from slipping and how to tie it tight. Also, how old is your dye generally? I'm thinking you don't let it get old since you do so many pieces, but I'm wondering what I can get away with as far as older Procion dye. Thanks for all you do.. and your family is great, by the way
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 5 жыл бұрын
No. I know many people save, wash, respool, etc. sinew; but, I toss it after one use. It's only $10-12 for an 800' spool of waxed artificial sinew on Amazon, so it makes more financial sense for me to toss it. You didn't say whether you're asking about the age of liquid or powdered dye. Some of the powdered dye I have is a few years old and doesn't show any different in the results compared to new dye. Liquid dye I usually don't use beyond a few days. But, as long as there's no soda ash in the liquid dye, you can refrigerate it for weeks/months and it will still work well.

Did you notice that he kept the colors on top and fed the liquid dye to the bottom, which allows gravity to keep the black from traveling up? I wonder if the lines would be crisper on the ice dye if you put plastic wrap over, then flipped it the same way, ice on bottom, dye powder then shirt..
@Tiny_Island_Designs

I believe you might not be waiting long enough for the top colors to 'grab' before turning it over. The black will only go where there is no color set so wait and give your top colors time to set/grab.

I’m just starting, but, with the ice method you’re not stuck with ten containers of leftover dye that will go bad..no messing around, the only waste just runs off immediately. So..sixes on that, it just depends on the finish you want..

To put the dye usage in perspective, the spoon I use in the videos is a baby food spoon that holds about 1/4tsp. I buy dye in one pound (or larger) bulk containers and my average cost of dye for each shirt is 50 cents. With a G200 shirt, that brings the total to about $2.75 per shirt, all in on materials.

How long can you let your soda ash water sit for before it is bad? And can you re-use your soda ash water? Meaning store it, then re-use it... Anyone that knows is free to answer, it would be greatly appreciated. Tie dying is a whole new world to me. LOL Thanks all...
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 3 жыл бұрын
Forever. No, really - forever. Arguably, I've had the same bucket of soda ash solution for over five years. I just add water and soda ash as needed to bring the water level up and keep it "slippery" so that the pH/soda ash concentration is roughly correct. I throw items into it, pull them out, wring them out, toss into the washing machine to spin out, and carry on. I've even had some items in the same bucket of soda ash for *years* before they're pulled out to be used. As long as the item doesn't have metal (zipper, grommets, etc.), there's no issue.
