This is a standard "peacock" fold that ended up having ends that looked liked flames. And interesting result; but, not what I was planning on for this shirt.

My "day job" is that of a commercial photographer. So, I have a large variety of lighting available; though I primarily use strobes that are fixed on rails for the photography work... There was actually more light available in the tie dye space *before* I re-arranged/re-organized the studio; but, the "day job" takes priority for the re-arranging the space since it's what pays the bills. ;) I'll probably add a couple of cans for two 100w LEDs above the tie dye space in the Fall so I don't need to move lighting around between this space and the area I use for the "Project Time" and "Epoxy Fun" videos.

This is so exciting ! First off I love peacocks! But your experiment with this coloration is fab!! Here is my thoughts on your shirt pictured. I love the upper portion , the bleeding so far up is great! The light blue could be from the black dye, but it also could be from the green. Yellow and blue make the green. So experimenting with each color alone will be needed to figure out which is responsible or if it needs both colors together. The lower section that list it’s definition... I wonder if since the fabric is less dense as you go down to the tip , if you only re apply dye to the mid point of the tied section to the top of tied section and left it at that. Or if you just applied dye once. And tried adding more ice only. To help the dye make it all the way through. Because you are trying to get color into the folds but not have it too solid, I think applying dye once but adding more ice could improve chances to achieve what you were thinking. Can’t wait to see more on this concept ! You are right about the technique being good for flames, or sea weed... smoke, fog... space? 🤙🏻
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 5 жыл бұрын
From experience, applying more ice without applying more dye will result in subdued colors. And, I dislike subdued colors. The lowered definition in the lower section is due to my not being as precise with the folds in those areas - especially with "test" designs. Basically, a sloppy fold results in less detail.
@tereselapree222
@tereselapree222 5 жыл бұрын
Casual Collisions I didn’t think the folds were sloppy, but since there was less volume of fabric the dye put on filled up the folds more complete then the thicker area of folds. You folded one area with extra folds. I will have to go back and re watch the video. Memory fails at the moment .. I see folding .. extra folds.( folding part of the fan folds in half) then the shirt was turned, right there the memory gap is as to which part of the shirt the folded fans were at. 🤣 maybe that is the key also adding in the extra fold most likely added room to make a separation making it look like feathers. Maybe adding one more tie in the lower end of the feathers which would make it harder to get dye down in. Tricky part because I know you don’t want white areas , you want the color saturation but a demarcation line as well. When a real peacock fans out, the closer to the body the feathers are, the more solid it looks across the fan. I love the green in the video. I wonder if there is a dark blue that would separate like the black? Great chatting with you! Makes me want to pull out my dyes and get busy! I’ve just had too much going on lately. ✌🏽

I love the results, but understand your disappointment that the design didn't turn out as planned. That's actually what I love about tie dye and batik. The outcome is not just what you plan...there's serendipity, chemistry, no way to plan how a particular ice cube melts through the dye, etc. That's the wonder and magic of it. I know you know this, and your thoughts and what you learned about the process are helpful, but being on this end as observer and appreciator, all I can say is, very cool creation! A comment and a couple of questions: Overhead view is great. Would rubber bands work in place of string? What kind of string do you use? Is it waxed? Have you found your designs to be permanent without the addition of extra soda ash, as some artists use? Thank you for taking the time to share your process and expertise!
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 4 жыл бұрын
Rubber bands can be used in place of sinew in many cases; but, you can't pull rubber bands as tight as necessary so the results will not be the same. (i.e. no "white lines", poor separation, etc.) I use flat, waxed, artificial sinew such as: Black Sinew, 300-yard Roll: amzn.to/2XFVBr7 Brown Sinew, 300-yard Roll: amzn.to/2A0OAIB My son has a few shirts that he wore and washed 2-3 times *every week* for a couple of years that had little fading. Basically, what it looks like after it comes out of the dryer is what it will continue to look like for quite a long time. The dye doesn't fade - the fabric wears and results in less color being available due to the decreased size of the threads.

Using ice with liquid dye will just dilute the dye - resulting in more pastel colors. The ice allows the powder dye to "split" into its component colors.

How do you prevent the rest of the shirt that doesn’t have white from dying. I often end up having the white parts of my shirt get faintly stained while rinsing out as well as when I put it through the wash
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 4 жыл бұрын
When you rinse in the sink, you need to rinse with COLD water until you've flushed all the soda ash out of the shirt. After that, you can begin to untie the shirt. Then, in the washing machine, I usually go with cold wash only with an extra rinse. And, If I'm still concerned about the white areas, I may do a second cold wash only. After that - it should be fine.

You need to enjoy your happy accident. I would pimp that T. I tie fishing flys and the bleed is reminiscent of trout lure feathers❤️. I love the bleed. This pattern is ready for our troop logo on the left breast. I want to do this in our troop colors and let the scouts tie em up how they want, we would have uniform chaos, with our troop logo on the left breast. You rock. This is the 3rd video of yours I have seen. Subscribed after the first one! ✌️😎

Thanks for the feedback. The feathers could be useful with other designs; just haven't worked out how to better control them. Thanks for the sub!

I'm just starting to tie dye shirts so this might seem like a silly question but why do you turn the shirt inside out?? I haven't done that for mine.

Are the shirts inside out when you dye them?

Question, what would cause a shirt to look faded after being tie dyed? I have done other shirts before and the colors were all bold and bright. I allowed them to sit in a plastic bag for like 3 days. The one l speak of was a rush job only 24 hours. Did the timing play a part? HELP.

Low concentration of soda ash pre-soak, chlorine in your ice if ice-dyeing, chlorine in your water if liquid dyeing, old dye if liquid dyeing, not batching (waiting) long enough, low temperature during batching, not removing the sizing from the material before pre-soak, etc. There are times where I'll end up with pastel results and absolutely nothing is different than normal -- it's a "throw your hands up" kind of moment where there isn't really any valid answer other than "it just happens". But, it's usually one of the things listed in the first paragraph.
