Back in the 80s, Captain America was swapped out for a Reagan-style patriot, while Steve Rogers hero'd under a different name. It was only temporary though; Steve became Cap again in #350. And at the start of #350, there was a scene where a truck went out of control in NYC, and Steve had to stop the truck and save, in rapid succession: a mother, some little leaguers, the mom's baby, and (to stick the landing) a pie. The symbolism was almost bludgeoned, but considering the context of recent events (i.e. the new Cap turning psycho), I was delighted to see Steve rescue baseball, mom, and apple pie.

Fun Fact: Pie vs. Cake is actually the oldest documented argument on the internet. It was started back in the 80's between two IBM programmers using their inter-office mailing system and message board that was actually more of an 'Intranet' than the internet the way we actually know today. Needless to say, it's extremely polarizing topic, and before long, most of the company was embroiled in the debate. tl;dr = It continued to rage for many years before spilling out onto the modern day internet, becoming the juggernaut it is today. As American as Dutch apple pie! New Amsterdam (which was renamed New York) and Pennsylvania were Dutch colonies originally. I think there is something lovely about Superman and pie, particularly with apple pie being an import (both the primary ingredient, and the fact that the pie style is Dutch, reportedly), and with Superman as another immigrant who has embraced (and been embraced) an American identity. There is also something very endearing about Superman eating and enjoying food - what could be more American than that! I feel like a one-page story about Superman vs Joey Chestnut, or Superman and Jughead from Archie comics would work, because there is something so very American about liking, if not loving, unpretentious food like pie, hot dogs and burgers.

Interestingly, Batman has a deep love for American food similar to Clark's. For example, in the Brave and the Bold show, Batman is divided into three beings that represent his main character traits, one of them being a lazy guy who loves to eat nachos. Also, when Rorschach sneaked into his mansion and got to the Batcave, the only thing Bruce complained about was that the vigilante ate breakfast after entering 🤣🤣🤣

Also, it keeps superman human. Its often referred to or he says he has no need to eat. He’s become so powerful that he doesn’t need typical food to sustain him. Especially during the silver age. They had to keep upping the ante on his powers. I specifically remember an episode, where he blew out a star like a candle. Very hard to top that as well as being very hard to convince that he’s still human. At that point he’s basically a God in human form. His love of apple pie keeps him grounded as a human being in story and keeps him relatable to the readers.

I mean..cake is often recognized as being a rich desert flavorwise so it makes sense the exonomically rich person would eat it. I think this also is a good indicator of clarks love of pie. Despite being an immigrant sucess story, Clark is never truely rich. He could be thanks to his powers but he comes from humble adoptive roots which he appreciates. He could escalate his career so much more using his powers but he chooses to do everything on that front by the books. He is a reporter for the Daily Planet. He is a darn good one, and his built-up economic status is not something to scoff at, but he is at most the upper middle class. He earned that legitimately with no cheats that would unfairly put him abouve anyone else. These are the kind of hard work mentality values he grew up with on the farm. He appreciates the simple things for what they are. He will play baseball, eat pie, work a field..because these are the kinds of things most average people can also do and enjoy the benefits of. Batman was born into privalage. Its not something he decided and it doesnt mean he is bad..but it does mean he never grew up without the finer things just being there. He isnt ignorant to the hardships of the world or the standards most live in..he just looks in on them from an outside persepective. He comes from a spoiled world that was made hollow with his parents deaths. He is always trying to bring Gothem to that standard he once had as a child of everything feeling perfect. Its unreasonable since everyone cant just be free of worries like his family were before the murders, but that is what he associates as a proper goal to reach for. Gothem will NEVER be good enough for Batman because it needs to be great all around, not just safe. A privilaged child's standard. Superman however is good with just fixing the worse parts of life that most people can't and allowing the rest of society to fill in the gaps. He doesn't go out every night to try and single handledly stop every sleezy mugger..he only takes care of situations who are a genuine threat and cant be stopped in the moment by people like the police. Clark has a greater sense of community responsibility and settling for what is good enough for everyone as a whole. He understands the importance of balance and reasonable expectations. If you tip things too far in one direction, somewhere else, there needs to be a compensation. Bruce is perpetually running back and forth on the scale trying to load up both ends with everything there is. Supes enjoys the gentle sway in the middle until a weight slips off and he adjusts it. I would like to note we see a grittier and more extreme version of this in "Gods and Monsters" thanks to the differenr adoptive parents thar version of Supes was found and reared by. He interestingly has more batmanlike traits in ways because he leans even further to the oppostie extreme. He knows what true hardship and scarifice is like, so he can only sympathize more with them and the simple things. Due to this however, he also is much more direct. He emotionally feels the weight of his actions but also has the fortified desnsitaion, an emotional callus, to go that step further. Ine good example form the lead up trailer to the movie is when he walks right past the bus of standred people calling for help so he can get to the source of the phychic storm. He isnt being heartless, he is just putting the needs kf the many over the dew in the moment as he cabt risk the entire city blowing up for a cluster of people. We can see he is still very conpassionate in the moments after and still acts with thought over impulse. Clark however, just couldnt do that. He has too much optomism and altruistic hope. He would stop to reasure them in the least. This has its negatives but overall it is a much better balance in the middle that allows him to be more effective than either his G&M counterpart or Batman without higher reprocussion.
@ProjektTaku Жыл бұрын
This is why Clark Kent is so important to superman. Superman is the pure "man of tomorrow" who inspires and leads people, but without clark, he's just a hollow shell that isn't humanized. Clark is a simple man. An immigrant from a dead country, and world, adopted by a kind farmer couple, the most underrated of jobs but one that holds up society just as superman would, not quite unpopular or super popular at his high school but always an outcast, which is why he so quickly fell in love with lori, someone would can truly understand him, yet makes friends (Pete Ross) and falls in and out of love (Lana lang and Lori lemarri) as he moves to the big city. There he works as a mild-mannered but not without personality reporter, pairing with a plucky experienced reporter who counterbalances his "small-town boy" vibe with a feisty "Big-city girl" personality that makes him fall in love with her, and moves back to his home town to raise his young boy. One thing I appreciate about superman is the mundaneness of his parents death, a staple of heroes. I do enjoy the traumatizing gunning down of bruce's death that drives him to never again let that happen and set anyone else on his path of vengeance, or barry's mysterious murder of his mother that causes him to constantly strive to be faster and ponder what would've happened if he arrived just a bit earlier, but superman's parents deaths are oddly quiet, as jonathan kent dies from a simple heart attack from elderly age, yet still a fulfilled man knowing he set his son on the right path, and how clark has all these fantastical abilities yet the most common cause of death still eludes him, but he's okay with that natural, human experience.
@ianfinrir8724 Жыл бұрын
One of my favorite zero stakes Superman stories is "The Hardest Job In The World" where Clark, for a story at the Daily Planet, works as a construction worker, a truck driver, and so on, and even though he'd be amazing at those jobs thanks to his powers, he doesn't use them and you can tell he has genuine appreciation for the people that do this kind of work.

On a side note - regarding your background of all those paper volumes of comic collections. I'm someone who has been enjoying comic books since the 60's. And for decades, the really only available reading options were the individual comics - with the vary rare collected edition mixed in. So for a good 50 years I was used to reading comics in paper form. And it was real hard moving over to digital. But I'm so glad I did! First of all, there is all that space saved. I was simply running out of room from all those boxes and shelves of comics. Secondly, there was the realization that buying new hardcopies wasn't really doing me any good anymore. Someday my comic collection will become my retirement fund. And I know back issues, like the "Death of Gwen Stacy," will continue to accumulate in value. So, my comic collection wasn't just for fun, it was also an investment. But new comics are so widely available, that they don't go up in value the way that Golden Age, Silver Age, even Bronze Age comics do. It was a bit of an transition to go from reading paper to digital. But now I hardly notice the difference. And it is so much more convenient. Something to think about.

Counter: Not everything is available digitally. Some people prefer a physical reading experience. Not everyone is collecting comics as an investment. I know originally when I started reading digital I just bought a few here and there but kept reading mostly physical comics. But then I slowly transitioned over to digital. These days most new comics are available digitally. Usually what happens is an edition is initially released exclusively in print. But if you just wait a few months they put out a digital copy. And in modern times most children have been raised in a digital era. One other point that I forgot to make in favor of digital is that the digital copy is often cheaper than the print edition. So it is also a money saver.

The 1947 quote about apples being imported made me think of Fish & Chips being an iconic British dish when, of course, potatoes were an imported ingredient for Britain! Just shows the nonsense of that argument 🤔

To make it even worse, fish and chips was actually a Belgian dish that was imported into the UK by immigrants and refugees! 🙂

The introduction of The Rock's Black Adam was meant to signal a power shift in the DCEU. Perhaps it also would've led to Superman switching from pie... to strudel.

It is interesting how the culture of pie can be different in other nations. I remember a Texan friend of mine who tried a pork pie for the first time and wasn't a fan (though like anything it helps if you get a good quality one). We also have the lid v not lid pie debate, while places like Wigan are iconic for their pies as well as the Cockney rhyme for lies ( "porkie pies"). There is also the infamous football chant "Who ate all the pies?" , a cruel chant directed at larger footballers (though this is less common now given the insane diets and control they have at clubs now). Anyway, this was a great video as it was a fascinating look at defining nationhood through food as well as the symbolism of Superman.

This video made me think of this scene from the Codename: Kids Next Door movie, "Operation: Z.E.R.O.". Grandfather is addressing his army of mind-controlled villains about needing to destroy the Book of KND to seal his victory: "Because when kids read that book, they discover the one thing more powerful than me." The villains make guesses, with Nightbrace suggesting "Pie?" "No, you fools! HOPE." 😊

When you made a post asking what pie superman likes I went into a linguistic analysis saying that here in Greece we call that desert a tart(τάρτα) and we have our own definition of pie(πίτα) with fyllo as I am sure you as a Canadian would know but I've just came up with an idea about a joke in a panel where superman asks wonder woman to bring him a pie and she brings a greek spinach or feta pie🥧 honour your country Diana...😅 PS between you and me US American patriotism is one the most cringey things to me as a European
