Great work Sasha! Can you do videos that cover the different versions of the Amazons? The peace loving and kinky pacifists from the Golden age? Badass warriors, scholars, artists, etc with personalities and characteristics from the Post Crisis era? To the rapist and child killers in the New 52? There's so many different versions of them and the New 52 completely ruined their reputation. Incels still use that era as an excuse to hate on the Amazons. Love your videos?

This was the period in comics where the main character got swapped out for more violent replacements. Batman was replaced by Azrael who had an even more extreme attitude than Bruce Wayne and wore a costume that made him look like a transforming mecha. But the Knightfall saga sold really well. Since it worked with Batman, they tried it again with Wonder Woman. Because it's not comics if they don't beat a good idea into the ground.

Artemis’ introduction was the most true to Wonder Woman mythos as you could get. It had all the shock sexuality (Charles Marston would approve), fused with Greek Tragedy (Hippolyta sacrificing another for her daughter) and it’s injected the series with some electricity desperately needed after years of cookie cutter good-girl Diana.
@mwg5004 жыл бұрын
It led into Queen Hippolyta eventually being forced to take the Wonder Woman mantle and traveling back in time to serve with the JSA, which was a brilliant story arc and way to cover the golden age WW idea and set it up more as a legacy mantle.

I'm a fan from this time. When this storyline was going on, in was generally known that John Byrne was taking over after #100, so anything that happened those 10 issues wouldn't last. Not expecting much, this run was much better than I expected! I love Mike Deodato's art, and I liked the biker shorts! I also liked how Diana was more down to earth for awhile; it was a time when the creators could be experimental, and they were! I'm a John Byrne fan, but when he took over, it felt like everything was returning to the status quo. As for all the cheesecake art, that was the 90's!! Not only were comic book publishers putting out swimsuit issues of their female characters, on the newsstand there were all the men's magazines like FHM, Maxim, etc., all ln competition for the same (male) audience. Getting back to Deodato, I'd love to see what you think of his Catwoman run!! It's disappointing how popular she was in her own book, created her own identity apart from Batman, but that seems to be long forgotten.

This was really interesting. I never got familiar with Artemis, but the context makes perfect sense since early ‘90s DC was all about shaking things up, killing Superman, replacing Batman, and apparently Wonder Woman isn’t immune to shock writing trends of the time. After this video, seems like Artemis at this time was the Faith to Diana’s Buffy. Pretty interesting. As for over/underrated comic book costume designs, I prefer Wolverine’s mid-2000s yellow and blue costume over either of his classic looks. Brown costume, Tiger Stripe costume...both great, but the redesign just hits right for me. Great video!

I enjoy cheesecake, I think it's a good indication of an artist's style and talent and it's just also pleasing to the eye, though I like it to feel a little more naturalistic. In a weird way Artemis' outfit being so strategically ripped is somehow _more_ revealing than actual nudity, as you could argue the latter falls within the confines of 'heroic nudity', as you see in a lot of statues and paintings (as well as characters like Dr Manhattan). I must say I really do like this art, though. Artemis' crazy ponytail is very larger than life and dynamic.

This! Especially if you're creating a character who's supposed to be a hard-ass warrior woman from a grim desert tribe of Amazons...I'd figure a character like that would have as short and practical a hairstyle as possible.

I love all of Diana's alternate costumes. In my ideal DC world, she could just open her closet and put on which ever iteration of her uniform that suits her mood on a given day. I really do love her original look best, though. I hope she returns to the classic outfit eventually. I love the Gal-centric take on her costume that our princess sports now, but do miss the iconic star studded trunks and the red and white striped pointed mid-calf boots. Silver age is my all time fav, when she featured an actual golden eagle on her bustier instead of the "kinda-birdish" double W she's had for the last few decades. Any time an artist does a costume design that makes it look more full and bird-like, my little heart goes pitter patter. Btw, Sash, I love your vids. You are fab and fun. Reading the arc when it first came out, I liked the fact, that Artemis was Diana's moral opposite, but you had the feeling that her time as WW was not going to last. I liked the hook of Hippolyta's treachery, an element that would come into play later during the John Byrne run. Artemis as Cassie's mentor and trainer along side Diana and Donna was a great way to use the character, and keep her somewhat in the spotlight. However, I am enjoying the newest iteration of Artemis in Red Hood and the Outlaws.

is nice to show a new or diferent side of a hero that evolved so well since WW2 (actually WW1 according to movie) she was shown adapting to new times and keeping her immortality and ever young miracle (mostly all amazons are that way) I guess she showed some sane interest in mortal females in the movie to better fit in that world, or tried to

3:39 Great job as queen there Hippolyta. "As long as Diana's alive whoever else is Wonder Woman can go die for all I care."

I totally agree that George Peréz's run on Wonder Woman was the best. DC editorials really forgot about the words "consistencies" and "continuation"

You should check out WW #250 and 251 of the original WW series for the origins of the red-haired Artemis. Reference: Orana.

Hi Sasha. I love when you talk about Wonder Woman and any of the characters associated with her. First, I didn't mind Artemis. It was good that the writers remind the readers that Wonder Woman is a role in the Amazon's government and not a title given to Diana like "Superman" was given to Clark/Kal-El. I didn't like the art with that particular story arch but I realize that you have to accept some over blown depictions because of the financial needs at DC; gots to make those little "hungry" boys want to buy the mag. Personally my favorite WW artists were George Perez and the Terry and Rachael Dobson. The last point that I would like to respond to is the absence of a consistent writing/art team. I think the stories from the past that were always the most successful were the ones where Diana was an agent of Athena and the Greek Gods would invade her world and interrupt her life. Sadly, I would borrow a lot of story structure from Xena, Warrior Princess with the members of the Greek Pantheon consistently like Greg Rucka's "The Hiketeia". Still like that one 17 years later.

@Kingdrago101 Starfire was in the new 52 Red Hood & The Outlaws, not in Rebirth. Two different series.

@Kingdrago101 and the original comment I posted did not mention Starfire at all, only Artemis.

I was reading Artemis as Wonder Woman when the books first came out. I thought she looked too much like Jim Lee's Zealot from early issues of WildCATS. I like Artemis's current iteration a lot more.

Tbh Biker Wonder Woman is one of the most restrained 90s redesigns and I kinda love it for a story arc costume. You know it'll always go back to normal, but it looks really cool for a short time.

"Let me get this straight: you think that Diana’s biker shorts were a good look?” - I do. And I'm tired of pretending it's not.
