@@tysonleblanc8862 I was a casual for 9 years (through the recession too). Tough, yes. But worth it to finally be registered. I would do it over again even though many times I wanted to give it up. But, I promise. Stick with it and the day you get registered will be one of the best days of your life!

WOW! I work at a different port on the East Coast and we don't have casuals, we just open the books every so often and take in new members ... some make it and some don't. New members are left in a pool to draw from when there is need of extra men/women. Some eventually get into an assigned gang of "regulars" or a whole new gang will be made of new recruits with a few older longshoremen in it to teach them the ropes. I guess "the pool" is the closest to a "casual" that we have but at least they are in the Union.

This video is more depressing than the actual footage of Casuals. The video should've been made filming bums on the street and how you can end up if you don't do something for yourself.

Actually Casuals are entitled to FULL Healthcare and Dental..Only if u are on the TOP 2 Boards..Like A Or B Board At least here in Canada we are.. Also A Boarders make more than Union Members Because of the less Dues they pay..B Board is the Best Board in terms of Making money.. Less Union Dues

For those that are not familiar with Longshore work it's basically like a pyramid scheme. The ones on top get all the money and great retirements while the ones on the bottom don't even make enough money to pay for their gasoline to keep trying to get jobs. The fact is you would make more money working at McDonald's then you're going to make as a casual longshoreman. You might even get better benefits at McDonald's because yeah it's true as a casual you don't get anything absolutely nothing. Not to worry the ones in the union get everything oh yeah they get $12,000 a month retirement money not including 401k or anything else. Sounds like a great deal. I worked as a casual for years and normally I was lucky if I made enough money to pay for my gas to keep trying to get jobs. Not a nickel's worth of medical sick pay nothing. You just keep showing up hoping someday they're going to hire you. Anyways I have family that have done it for years. My advice is just don't do it. Unless they're going to hire you who wants to waste 10 years of their life for that or longer when you can spend the same time going to college and get a better-paying job. A longshoreman is a good-paying job but compared to what compared to a oral surgeon or something no it's their wages are laughable and their retirement is laughable. So if you're talking about a bunch of retards that can't do anything better and didn't finish high school and got their girlfriends pregnant a lot of them become longshoreman because they can't do anything else in this life because simply some of them are too stupid or have other issues. I would not sell yourself that short. Once in awhile they have some good jobs down there but for the most part it's just hard dirty work. Most of them I know that I've done it for 37 years their body is pretty well shot so if that's what you want then go right ahead and do it but I wouldn't advise it. Their Union is supposed to be really great and I think that it is but let me ask you a question what kind of a union would allow people to work for Worse working conditions than Walmart. For a casual longshoreman the working conditions are worse than working at Walmart and at the end of the month to pay is even less. Unless running equipment or something is your life stream I wouldn't waste your time I would just do something else. They're hiring system sucks I mean somebody's dad or family member dies while they're active than their kids just come in and take their job and don't have to Casual anyway. The whole system is garbage. I wouldn't waste your time complaining about it I just wouldn't do it. There's better things out there. Not only that but the element of people you work around or some of the lowest forms of life on Earth these people can't get along with each other let alone anybody else. They really are the scum-of-the-earth they have an attitude kind of like motorcycle gangs same kind of a thing. For those interested I just wouldn't waste your time thinking about it I would find something else there's many great careers out there you don't need the longshoremen's Union.

I was a casual for 13 years. most years were rough, a few years there was work everyday. I tell people don't quit your real job even when it gets busy. when you make it in, it all pays off. if you have an education or access to it just pass on this kind of work. don't get seriously injured as a casual or an id they will try everything to get rid of you. the motto an 'injury to one is a injury to all' is bullshit. as a injured id clerk jobs that I can do were rarely available and 2nd dispatch went to the casual hall. I went home just like a casual. i filed a federal complaint to let injured workers go to 2nd dispatch for clerk jobs or signal jobs and won afters years of being shit on by the union and pma. even today inured workers have no pay guarantee even tho we pay into it. I filed one time and the state approved it then pma denied it. even tho I met the requirements. they do everything they can to hurt injured workers and when they get sued the union tries to join your side. hypocrisy at its best.

Steve , I as a "Fully registered "A" book Longshoreman would GREATLY appreciate it if you would refrain from spreading inaccurate misinformation !!! First of aLL , "Casuals" are noTTT "Longshoremen / Longshore women they are "Supplemental Labor" to fill excess work not otherwise filled by ACTUAL fully registered Longshore workers !!! Secondly , ("B" registrants / ID's) , Identified CASUALS , and unidentified CASUALS are noTTT" fuLLy REGISTERED Longshore workers !!! ("B" registrants / ID's) have the letter "T" in front of their "B" registration numbers which refers to being of TEMPORARY status until such time as they become "FULLY REGISTERED" !!! In the rare event that due to a severe down turn in available work the contract provides for a reduction in manning !!! Also PMA (The EMPLOYER) pays 50% of the union dues referred to as "Pro Rata" for the TEMPORARY "B" Pool registrant who is responsible for the other 50 % of the UNION dues !!! Furthermore , for any of you who were MOST fortunate to have either been gifted an industry interest card or got drawn from the lottery on a 3 X 5 " interest card , say THANK YOU HARRY instead of whining and complaining about how you have been a casual for 10 or more years !!! If you think that being a CASUAL for 10 years is too long then 1) You do not know much about this UNION ( it is made up of many "Locals" up and down the ENTIRE West Coast) !!! 2 ) If you were to visit some of your Brothers and Sisters from the smaller Locals like Coos Bay , Port Ludlow , Port Gamble , Arcadia , Bellingham and so on you would find that MOST of those people have been "CASUALS" for upwards and often times in excess of 20 YEARS !!! 3) And for ANY of you who think that it is your "ENTITLEMENT" to complain about those "REGISTERED" members who travel from our other Locals to get work due to a lack of sufficient work in their own home port. I encourage you to go up to the Dispatcher and complain to them about how those are "YOUR JOBS" that he or she is giving away !!! And please let me know just how weLL that works out for you !!! And lastly......"Paying your dues" is noTTT so much about the money that you pay to pay the costs of keeping our doors open and you in a JOB , but MORE about paying the respect to those with YEARS of MORE EXPERIENCE than YOU !!! So if you want RESPECT once you have put in your time and paid your "DUES" , then stop acting like MACHO PUNK ASSED THUGS and show your SENIORS some respect !!! We do noTTT OWE you annnnYthing !!!

MonoTodd Hmmmm in all you pretty much nailed it. but if I may ask how long were u a casual? and smaller ports have an excuse to remain casuals there's not enough work but LA/LB ports have enough work to register all of us if you think about it. Now i agree that u do the time and respect seniority 100% but let's get one thing straight we are the next generation of local 13. Not PMA and it's the union's fault for giving PMA to much power in the first place. That's a whole other story though. Anyways I hope u you get what I'm saying because you came off like a complete AZZZZZ.
