Warren - I am a businessman: an accountant with 35 years under my belt, 20 in accounting and finance and 15 in construction. I ran a bank for nearly 18 years, and I’ve own led my own (successful) construction company for the last 15 years. Currently we have a fleet of 12 tractors, 3 forklifts, numerous other pieces of heavy equipment and 30+ F250’s. You don’t know me from Adam, and I’m aware we’re not supposed to give unsolicited advice. But as a way of saying “thanks” for all the great videos, perhaps you’ll consider the following points - accept what fits for you, and disregard the rest. - I’m my experience, men like you are hard to find, and getting harder every day. - In my years of business, I have found that hard working and very experienced men like you seldom charge enough for their services. - You’re there on a Saturday - are you charging a “Saturday” fee? - You are clearly what we call a “subject matter expert” when it comes to heavy equipment. You have many years of experience (starting with the Navy I think). Most men do not comprehend the true value of such knowledge, and therefore they undervalue it. - Do you know your true overhead costs? Beyond a typical hourly rate to pay yourself, are you charging enough to cover the things you keep on your rig like: sealant/RTV, extra bolts, rags, lube, brake clean, etc? Knowing your real overhead (OH) costs is essential to making a profit. - Are you “paying yourself first” when it comes to savings for the future? Setting aside some part of every bill towards your rainy-day fund or for your retirement is just so important. - I know having an employee is a royal pain (trust me, I know: I have between 80 and 150 employees at any point in time). I also know it will take many tries to find the right guy (and often he’ll be from another country), but if you can train one good man to do what you do, when you’re done wanting to work full-time you will have a VERY valuable business to sell to him. What’s often done is you sell him your business by making him a loan, and his loan payments to you will help fund your retirement. - I know it may sound expensive or like a waste of money, but find an accountant you can trust, with clients similar to yourself, and discuss these things with him. I promise you they can be very helpful. Feel free to message me if you have any questions. Warren, I know there’s more to life than money and business and accounting etc. But I’m also painfully aware of how often experts like you that I’ve encountered send me bills that are so low they make me want to cry. I know that may sound odd, and it’s not like I want to over-pay for repairs, but I thought you’d appreciate a business owner’s honest perspective about such things. And like I said, consider my advice, and if you’re already doing these things, then great. If you know you’re already charging all you can (based on your competition), then great. And since I’m a total stranger, if you think I’m full of it, I understand that as well ;) Regardless, thanks for sharing your extensive knowledge with these videos - I really enjoy them.

Very solid and well meant advice. I spent my working life repairing machines and loved it. It paid well but always there were younger guys charging less even if they messed up and the work then came to me. I was limited to some extent by the market forces but charged more to those who saw my worth and gave repeat work. At the end of the day charging an hourly rate will never make a fortune but can be rewarding and in my case suited me better than running a bigger company. Yes I bought a pension and am very glad I did. I'm here because of the person Warren is, I recognise him and his values.

Reuse C rings- that's how our farm worked for decades. Rebuild a pump. And do welding repairs- that's 2 specialists for the price of one, but keeps the income stream rolling in. Great video, Warren. I loved watching you rebuild that pump. Enjoy your day!

How you fix your own shit and how you fix someone else' is very different, my car has threaded rod replacing a motor mount bolt, worked for over a year. A customers rig is always fixed to industry standard, and usually c-clips are not reused, they are too cheap to risk a warranty on.

Warren, Love your no nonsense approach to things. You remind me of my father. He got things done and made things work. He had an old Cat D4 gas doze t Which someone adapted hydraulics onto for a good digging blade, it had a big heavy wench and was used for logging, to drag the cut trees out. He had a second that the blade was cable operated. They were both approx 1942 models and the first one was cammo green. Not sure if it saw action or not. My father was a machinist at Ingersoll-Rand and made any parts he could not order. We fixed everything!! I love the Tombstone quote!!!! "YOUR A DAISY IF YOU DO!!"

Interesting machine setup. Wish you could have gotten some footage of it running. We have a few small strawberry farms here in Ga. but nothing on that scale. They use mostly rubber tired tractors. Have a neighbor who does about an acre every year but hires it done because of the cost and specialized equipment involved. Good thing they could find the parts. Another great video and stay safe...........

Warren I have repaired hundreds of these pumps for cat they are a vickers brand pump and you can actually update them to a Denison if you would like they would last 2 to 3 times longer and would cost Half as much repair and replace than going back to good old caterpillar!P.s. That cane pump Slides directly off the shaft all you have to do is flip it over and tap on the shaft! Also Denison is owned by Parker hydraulics!

The majority of cameras use a 1/4-20 thread for mounting on a tripod. What you need then is one of those large magnets with a stiff goose neck with a 1/4-20 attachment on it to stick your camera on it, seeing as most of the stuff you are working on is heavy metal. It would be a no brainer for you to quickly stick the camera & position it with out fear of it falling off.

Disclaimer: Do not attempt what you are about to read, the following was done by skilled tractor operator and his skilled son in a cautious manner in excellent weather conditions with ALL guards in place AND if proper working condition AND NO IMPLEMENT CONNECTED WHATSOEVER. I remember riding on the link arms for very short distance with no implement on the tractor as I held on to the rops with one hand and while reaching around the other side of the rops to grip the shoulder of my dad, a first responder and nurse at the time, while travelling at a speed that I could walk faster than and only doing so in forward motion only. We had done that enough times that there was literally only one thing said, we always had a plan so that we both knew what to expect. The question was, are you walking or riding? Now, before any of you freak out there were no injuries what sever. He would always wait at certain points for me until either I was well clear of him and in sight or he clearly felt me gripping his shoulder. Most times he would come to a stop look towards me on the side I was gripping from and ask how I was holding up. Like I stated previously, he and I did so without incident and to clarify, we only moved like that at low speeds and very carefully on SMOOTH SURFACS. Also most times it was for a distance of no further than a football feild with thblade of the bucket pointed to the ground as a backup plan. I know that is very frowned upon today but that was ten years ago. What are the differences as it relates to safety out in a field vs being in a shop in today's world?
