Hey Ray, retired fleet manager here. I purchased a small hand held oil analyzer that checks solids (metal etc.) for less than $100.00 and checked the oil in our fleet on my own. Used that to set up change frequencies on various peices of equip ie lift trucks, semis, dumps and even lawn mowers. Saved thousands of dollars by doing so. Don’t remember the brand but I’m sure there out there.

Sorry but this devices dont give you much of valuable information, they only messure the electric conductivity, I wouldnt relay on that to increase oilchange intervals alone. The oil can be out of spec but stil have low electric conductivity, would rather get a real lab test. Than you can valued what your testing device say, with how good your oil realy is from the lab results, that ofcoure only works with the same typ of engine and the same oil.
@TheSimoc
@TheSimoc Жыл бұрын
@@jonasstahl9826 He was speaking about analyzer that checks solids. I really don't know what kind of analyzers are there. All I know is that the solids cannot be checked by conductivity, as they don't constitute a continuous conductive path, and not all solids are even conductive, although most in the case of engine oil are. Thus, I gather an implication that the analyzer he was referring to, was of fancier kind, and the implication is further amplified by the mentioned ballpark price - I doubt a simple conductivity analyzer would cost more than a dozen of bucks.

Hi Ray, I worked as an aircraft tech and later as a vehicle tech in the military. When I retired I worked on general aviation aircraft (Cessena etc). On an annual inspection we would use the same tool that you have to inspect the oil filter but would also cut the paper element out, rinse in gas and filter through a coffee filter. This would then be checked for materials. Video of process on youtube.

We did oil samples every 50 hours on the helicopters I worked on. Gas turbines but mostly the gear boxes. Your about the only person I've seen, who doesn't work on aircraft, who actually cuts open the filters and examines them. Smart move. You should also install a Filter Mag on your filter, expensive but it keeps the metal circulating in your engine in the filter.

To stop your creeper from creeping, use a single layer of cardboard laid flat under it. You can still creep if you push but it doesn't creep when you don't intend to. It also keeps the oil drips off the concrete.

Hi Ray. I was a Mechanic for over 50 years and on every Oil change I would kill the ignition on petrol engines and Diesel Engines I would shut the fuel off. So I would fill with oil and turn the Engine over on the battery till the oil light went out then let it start. I have seen Machanics doing a simple oil change getting grabbed crank shells and even one where the hydraulic lifters battered the cam hard to the point of permanent damage.

26:07 - I'm suddenly reminded of a couple years ago, my mom telling me that my sister would be late to our get-together because her truck "only has 5% oil in it, so she's stopping to get a liter or two." My immediate response was, "If her truck only has 5% oil left in it, it shouldn't be running. If she feels better getting a liter or two of oil, fine, but ask her to wait until I get there to check it out before she adds it." -- yeah, her oil was full, it was at 5% life. Glad she waited before dumping two liters in. lol (I'm from Canada, we use liters, but it would be a pint in US, or half pints; but you knew that)

the cat filter is a serious upgrade. the pleats are much better and the higer surface area allows for slower speed inside the filter wich leads to better filtration. the cat filters are vastly superior to your current one. industrial stuff like cat is more expensive but the quality is basically impeccable.

I did a quick price comparison from the AC Delco to the Cat, and the CAT filter is only around $7-10 more, depending on where one gets it. I'd gladly pay $10 more to get that additional filter material and extra oil capacity for my engine! Great move for Ray I'd say, eh? 🙂

Found more than a couple reviews and warnings regarding the adaptor for the duramax and Cat filters that didn't have the bypass for the powerstroke. @@craigquann i'll stick to cat just like most OEM parts. but especially with industrial equipment there is no budget quality version, there is only the basic philosphy that any from of cheaping out on parts like this will costs millions to companies and hurt reputation wich will sink cat. you can be sure that its good and it will work as advertised with plenty of margin built into the design. its as far as possible from regular car oem replacement parts as you can get in terms of quality.

Thx Ray for an informative and entertaining video and the recent upgrades to your Dirty Max FWIW I'm on my 2nd D'Max 1st was '05 LLY which I used for towing a 38' TH I installed the full Banks Power kit with Ottomind, Speed Brake ram air CAI which I put over 170k miles on without any issues. Now have '15 LML I purchased new with Banks IDash to pull my 40' TH currently has 75k miles with only emmision system issues that were covered under warranty. I'm running Delvac Extreme oil and Royal Purple filter that are large surface area like Cat you installed but fit on stock threaded adaptor and offer significsnt increase in filtration effecientcy @ about half the cost of Cat and have anti drainback valve. I live in So West US and use exhaust brake when towing on down hills and have found it tends to increase oil usuage compared to non usuage. I'm considering adding the upgrded Banks oil cooler kit to mine, maybe that would be a subject for another of your nformative videos as you also are making your truck work for you. Just a thought, when you opened the oil filter and did a inspection, you can go to the next step, by using side cutters, cut the metal strip at the end, pry up the locking strip holding the folded paper. Next use a sharp knife cut the paper filer at each end, pry out the paper folds, divide the folds of the filter, next put the paper folds in a vice and squeeze the oil out, tight as you can, remove from vice (note catch oil, this is messy ) open the paper folds, reinspect. Any metal will be stuck to the paper filter clear as day. Oil analysis are good with there graphs and % numbers and etc. etc. But when you see the different types of specks of metal, well, now you know. This maybe a rabbit hole you may not want to go! They say ignorance is bliss!

The longer filter will NOT allow for mor oil pressure, BUT what it WILL DO is allow for better filtration over the life of the oil change on the oil that is in the engine because of more filter. That’s why on Fords that take a 51515 (FL1A) I run a 51713. The numbers that I spouted off are Wix numbers but the idea is the same concept.

I agree, it won't add oil pressure, just more filtering. The only additional oil pressure might come from more oil in the system. More oil circulating in the system might make it run a little, and I mean a little cooler, but pressure should be negligable.

Ray, the reason you got two cat filters is because most of the big truck Cat engines use two oil filters so they pack them that way. Don't forget to do a few extra pre-start cycles extra to fill that bigger filter before you start the engine. I didn't think anything about till you mentioned you only needed one in your case. Does the change in filters change the oil use intervals on the engine? About all the diesel engines I work on are in ag equipment, lots of filters.

Pretty much any oil filter has an anti-drain valve. The only reason a filter is mounted straight upright is to reduce mess. We have a 321 cat excavator that has is oil filter upside down. It's a damn mess, but no issues. Think it's actually uses that 1R-1807.

My 22 years as a mechanic in the USAF, we had regular testing and cal of all torque wrenches. If one was dropped, it went directly to Bench Stock for testing and cal. I was doing some sensitive head work on a Mercedes a few years back and wanted to make sure that my T wrenches were accurate. I could find no place that did calibration of T wrenches. Most places I went looked at me as if I had lobsters crawling out of my ears! Finally, I went to a large machine shop and tested my wrenches V a new, fresh from Snap-On Super Hero maga expensive T wrench. What good is a torque wrench if it is inaccurate? Jus Saiyan, Super Saiyan.

Why not used a bypass oil filter? My powerstroke oil looks like gas auto oil until i change it. Get same as you w/extra qt oil but is located under hood so safer plus filtering w/ 2 filters. Just a thought. blackstone said Good Engine at last change around 182k.

I agree with this man's idea 💡, Ray. My big truck 🚚 has a Gulf Coast Bypass Oil 🛢 Filter. Their propaganda says that 100 % of the engine's oil passes through the filter every 7 minutes. And, it filters down to 3 microns.

Careful about not removing the aluminum oil seal for the oil container all the way. With it flapping around as your pouring the oil, it could fall off and end up in your engine.

I was thinking that too. He's so worried about contamination using a little old oil on the filter seal and then risks dumping that bottle seal in the fill tube multiple times. Crazy.
@spellcrafter23
@spellcrafter23 Жыл бұрын
@@johnh8268 Na, he's fine. Any contaminates that make it in the fill tube or oil check line will end up trapped in the filter. That's what it's for. The one place you don't want to contaminate is the center inside of the oil filter. That's why it's not a good idea to fill up the filter before putting it on. That oil will go straight to the engine.

I believe you can add an oil pressure sensor (and all sorts of sensors) with better resolution and accuracy than your current stock gage by adding a sensor to the Banks iGuage. Could make testing add ons like the CAT oil filter a bit more informative.

Hey Ray, Now that you got a big truck filter on your Duramax. You should be able to choose from a smaller micron to bigger micron filter. Your average parts person probably it’s not gonna have a clue which is which, but if you go to the big truck dealership or cat repair shop they should be able to let you know which is which.☮️🇺🇸

Just a concern/suggestion. I would have put some plastic like a used grocery store plastic bag around the uni-joint to keep the old oil off it. My concern here is that when you broke out the spray cleaner that it might seep into the uni-joint bearings and diluted the grease and or dissolving it making the uni life shorter.
@robertpage2023
@robertpage2023 Жыл бұрын
@@cbcalhoun I considered that but being that there is a rubber seal guarding the opening and there is a lot more fluid oil to dilute, I didn't think it as dire as the fact that those Uni caps are not sealed and there is a very small amount of grease in each cap bearing. It's a given that if you can see dark grease/oil at a point of bearing, there is friction heating up that lubricant and causing it to leak. That should be a dead give-away. The Jeep seems to have this evidence at every one of it's uni joints. Take a look at the videos where Mr. Ray was working underneath, you can see those dark stains on every uni joint especially there at the one at the wheels that comes off the diff. i know that if I owned that vehicle I'd be pulling those uni's out and cleaning and greasing those caps. It's called "preventive maintenance". Before when Mr. Ray was under a specific work order and could only do what he was ordered to do, I understood his work ethic involving those jobs but now with his own business he can not just do the work under request but for sure involve the owners into his concerns and fulfill the vehicle's immediate and down the road needs. It's what anyone would want in someone that you trust to handle your vehicle's wellbeing. I'm already getting the impression that the people who leave their vehicles with Mr. Ray KNOW that he is going to go the extra mile to make sure that they are happy with his work and that their vehicle is well taken care of. The old place of work he left seemed to attract people who just wanted to get enough to get by and really had no respect for the mechanic telling them that they needed specific things done to insure the safety of the vehicle. The "safety of the vehicle" translates to the safety of the driver and passengers. We've seen in many of Mr. Ray's past videos where he continuously tried to translate his concerns to the customers even though they were not interested in hearing them. And, we NEVER saw him cheat ANYONE!

Hi Ray the only issue I see with the longer filter is, the possibility of impact with the axle shaft, on compression in deep ruts etc.

@@andrewbarnett84 I was under the understanding that the axle on that truck is mounted so that it does not move at all, even when hitting pot holes. Is it connected to the truck with more or less trailing arms that would allow it to move several inches or is it bolted solidly to the truck with bushings that would only allow very minor movement of say 1/4”?

@@91CavGT5 Well, you may be correct, the axle shaft visible near the oil filter may travel to the transfer box, in which case should have little movement. My Bad.

Nipple Extractor - if no one knows what you're asking for, try their alternate names - "nipple wrench" or "inside pipe wrench". Like a conventional pipe wrench, they are the only tool which actually bites tighter the harder you pull on the handle. They are used a fair bit in plumbing especially in natural gas and propane lines which tend to have lots of small close nipples. At my plumbing supply store, we sold them from 3/8" to 1" NPT (remember NPT is based on the INSIDE diameter of the pipe). They're great for taking out damaged hose barbs threaded into automotive water pumps, also for removing damaged automotive sensors if you can get enough of the sensor broken or drilled out of the housing in order to insert the tool. Hope this helps someone someday.

In regards to the comments on the side door: I've suggested the same thing before, make it a left hinged door and spring load so that it will self close. Even recommended putting a long spring on the existing door (like a gate, and least expensive option) so far no response. However, I can re-do my truck, priorities are different for all. It will probably be delegated to the Wife Unit. 😊
