My grandpa used to dress up as cat in the hat for Halloween complete with face paint. Looking back on it he looked terrifying. An employee at my old elementary school also dressed as the cat for read across America week. The costume looked better, but everyone could easily tell it was her.

OMG you mentioned In Search of Dr. Seuss!! I got a VHS boxset at some point as a kid that had that movie, Daisy-Head Maisy, and The Butter Battle Book, and it was the only one of the three movies that I have kept into adulthood. It’s a fever dream of a special, and it always felt a little ominous to me - like they were gonna walk around a corner and Dr. Seuss would be standing there and tell everyone off. The radio that talks about WWII scared the crap out of me as a little kid. I never realized the cast was so insanely star studded! No one else I’ve met has ever seen it. I had to call my mom and tell her you talked about it because I got so excited.

The 1997 Cat in the Hat costume was used in the parade scenes in the movie "Jingle All The Way." Along side Paddington Bear, Sonic the Hedgehog, Crayola Crayons, a Smurf, Gumby, Raggedy Ann, a Cabbage Patch Kid, and so on.

There's an appearance of the Cat in Jingle All the Way, during the parade sequence. It may be the same costume that we saw in the real life Thanksgiving parade, but it was an on-screen appearance in one of the costumes.

XD For the record, I actually watched that Travel documentary about the Macy's parade the night before the video went up. Gotta love how blunt they are about what the parade is for. Thank you SO much for bringing up “In search of Dr Seuss” it’s one of my childhood favorites and believe it or not, I still watch it almost annually. I love it so much that one Christmas (as a full grown adult) I told everyone I didn’t want gifts, I just needed to find a dvd copy of that special! I was thrilled to open that box on Christmas Day!!

I loved Dr Seuss books as a kid and grew up with In Search Of Dr Seuss on VHS. So glad it got a mention! It was my introduction to so many of his stories and the opening song is in my head to this day. I think it's on KZbin for free now.

I remember seeing some of the Cat in the Hat movie at the theaters, but my mom had us leave before it was over because [insert reason here]. Our elementary school librarians dressed up as thing 1 and thing 2 for Halloween in 2003, and they panted their faces and used flesh tone modeling clay for the nose to get the accurate scaryness of how they looked in the film.

This is pretty well done as always, Dan. My only thing is that the reason Cat in the Hat went to another studio was because MGM's animation department, the home of Tom and Jerry, had shut down mid production of what would be the third Seuss special Chuck Jones was directing. And since that short, being based on The Cat in the Hat, was pretty much ready to start, DePattie Freleng Enterprises took over. Mostly due to contacts. Dr. Seuss, Chuck Jones and Friz Freleng all worked on the Private Snafu shorts.

I went to a car museum that has the Cat in the Hat's S.L.O.W. car from the movie on display and next to it they have the Cat in the Hat costume Mike Meyers wore on on set in a glass case which I've always found very funny but also kind of disturbing 😂

The 1973 Cat in the Hat animated film (along side the Sneetches and Green Eggs and Ham animated films) were a huge part of my childhood. Heck, I think I still have my VHS copy of Cat in the Hat in my possession to this day. Also, I think I have the exact same Cat in the Head costume that Dan is wearing. Only mine has a headsock/hood with ears to go along with it. Love it.

Love the video Dan I am a HUGE Dr. Seuss fan. I'm not sure if I am one of the biggest or maybe I am who knows. In Search Of Dr. Seuss is a classic and gave me some amazing insight into the life of Dr. Seuss. The animated cartoon is a timeless treasure that I still enjoy to this day and will even quote it here and there. Seussical I was 10 years old when it came out and I loved it and even performed in it twice for different companies once as a Who and another as The Grinch, tried to get The Cat In The Hat but no luck in landing the role. I even went to my old Elementary School dressed as The Cat, I read books, did music, taught kids about Dr. Seuss it was a fun time. Suess Landing in Universal is amazing and honestly I don't see what's so scary about the ride its quirky, fun, and charming but your opinions yours. I was at the Thanksgiving Day parade in 97 I did see the balloon but his hat was already deflated, wasn't sure what happened till much later but as a kid all you care about is seeing your favorite characters. Now that movie....I HATE HATE HATE with a burning passion, I hate it as much as the Grinch hated Christmas. I didn't think the humor was good, the plot was good, the unneeded adult and raunchy jokes....but again I digress...I don't like it but if you do great more power to you. Have to say though I love that mask with a moveable jaw.

I can’t believe you still didn’t take about the Disney costume with the most interesting history yet; The Wuzzles! At one point the costumes were auctioned off to a collector, who then sold them to a costume house in Hollywood which was a nightmare for Disney, because the character costumes were now rented by any production team to be used in their shows, movies, TV commercials etc as generic costumes lol So they were popping everywhere for a couple of decades. Not to mentioned that even though the show was short lived, they still made many versions of the costumes in a really short period of time.

I remember read across America!! I had teachers who always dressed up every year. It was a fun day full of activities. I toured as the Cat and the Grinch among other characters for a Dr. Seuss carnival act that had its last hurrah during the recent SAG strikes, for some reason due to that very last point it was my Equity debut on the same topic. The heads of all the costumes were actual hell on earth to have tethered to your shoulders and for some reason corporate also wanted us to do voices based on the PBS show. You will be really surprised to see just how many Seuss characters Costume Specialists just straight up imported from Seuss Landing! Absolute waste of talent making all those suits and props just to run out of budget to actually care for any of it...

A long while ago there was the Dr. Seuss experience in Toronto, Canada and there was a giant Cat in the Hat animatronic and it would talk to people and my mom said to me “ Do you have any questions you want to ask the Cat in the Hat” I said “ No” and the animatronic said to me “ are you sure?” and I said “ no” and he copied me and it went back and forth untill I broke out laughing and we both laughed I also remember a Lorax costume

When I went to universal studios in the 1990s they had "the Shadow" costumed character looming around the city area walking around the roof and fire escapes. Nobody has footage or photos of this I'm guessing it was 94 when the Alec Baldwin movie came out . There was also a Harry from Harry and the Hendersons walking character
