I've mentioned our Ben White doing the paw scooping before. He didn't seem to have a pattern - sometimes he did, sometimes he didn't. Also, regarding the little mats, those iPrimio ones you featured before are working out great. They're actually not that hard to clean up - just carefully lift and then dump in the litterbox you happen to be cleaning out or dump outside. I just hosed one off earlier this afternoon - a nozzle on the garden hose makes the job easier, then just drape over a fence to dry. Of course, if you're up north and under a foot of snow, that might prove a little problematic.

my cat is a stray i brought in when he was around 3-5yo. he also drank by paw a lot at first. i was baffled by this behaviour and decided to do all in my power to try and ascertain why. i have some conclusions that i think might be universal and much more likely than those you mentioned in the vid. - let's start off with ***how i stopped it, i got him a water fountain***. he very rarely if ever uses his paw on the water fountain. - so now let's go back to the beginning: so my immediate hypotheses was whisker fatigue. i got him a larger bowl, or rather, a camping metal plate. not a lot of depth, so not a lot of water volume to hold, but impossible to bother his whiskers since it's so flat and so open. (i tried a few bowls before this, but ima skip irrelevant details). might be placebo might not, but it felt to me he was happier with the plate than bowls, tho he still used his paw a lot. - when he 1st got into my home and i put a bowl of water for him, he didnt seem to want to drink, but given how many hours it had been since i encountered him on the street and how much he had eaten, he had to be thirsty. he reacted immediately to the water sound due pouring it to the bowl from the bottle. smelled it, but did not drink. frustrated with his out of character koiness or dumbness (and he is very much neither), **i pressed the matter by using my finger to splash the water a bit while i already had his attention, and then giving my finger to him to smell and lick**. this did the trick. he felt the water on his nose and was interested in drinking. i was happy, he was happy, however... - **if i used my finger to make water noise to him after refreshing his water, he would mostly just drink.** if left alone to his devices or i didnt use my finger upon pouring, he would use his paw. not an exact science as it seemed to be somewhat subject to whim, but it was 8-9 times out of 10. and didnt matter if he was being observed or alone. -so, last hints to explain his behaviour: this mf was picked up near a marina. this means large body of fresh water easily accesible, but the grease and trash on it tends to accumulate in the places that would be accessible to a cat. water puddles there also were often persistent half of the year. etc. in short, lots of bodies of water, of all sizes, including bowls of water ppl left for stray cats. but the water sometimes being still, sometimes not, regardless, often of bad quality. and clearly too, one could easily smell it off of a finger tip if one was blind or didnt have human intelligence. - *(TLDR) conclusion:** i suspect most readers already get it by this point, for those jumping here then.. my cat will actively test the water by drinking out of his paw before properly drinking. this, i know for sure. after i had strong suspicions i also did some testing. after he is very sure of the water quality, he then drinks properly if he is thirsty. if he isnt very thirsty and is more akin to a human eating some chips and getting a dry mouth, he will stick to paw drinking (in absence of a water fountain) - there is quite a strong healthy body of evidence that claims cats favour running water, for obvious reasons. simple evolutionary learning behaviour very prone to boosting survival. so my theory is not just backed my my sample size of 1 cat and experience (i since tested this on a couple friend's cats and so far the observations are sustained), it makes since given what we know about cats. but wait, there's more... - this mf... i kid you not, he will paw drink and paw his dry food entirely at his whims. it seems sometimes the dry food is just a bit too dry or something?! maybe he was fed up with the flavour being too repeated. or, get this, if he didn't eat his dose and i happen to not give him a fresh dose, it might be easier for him to force himself to down the remaining with some water. it's almost like watching a human child that's like 5yo try to work around adult food impositions. he is both smart and creative. - PS: my main reason to get him the water fountain was that by catching litter in his paw and paw drinking, he was constantly dirtying his water with litter. and he didnt seem to like the flavour of it too, as he knows and does ask to refresh the water, and before so is done, he will also avoid drinking as much as it is comfortable - which is way above what is healthy for a cat. so 2 birds with 1 stone, and oddly enough, the viewer question related to the vid's topic imho lmao...

Lisa’s question. The cat most likely does not like the bowl she should try different water bowls, wide glass bowls, ceramic also I’ve learned a lot of cats do not like plastic bowls. The cat is still thirsty so where there’s a will there’s a way. Also, I believe he’s looking around to see if his mommy notices so that she can change the bowl.

One of our cats will play in the water (or drink off his paw) out of boredom, if he's given the chance. We have a CatIt flower water fountain. When we first started using it, we didn't put the top piece in that makes the water stream, so it was bubbling out of the middle. Our cat thought that was fun to play with. Once we put that top piece in, he didn't have access to that bubbling water and lost interest in playing. Maybe Lisa's cat is drinking this way in the water in the mornings because he got bored overnight while his human was sleeping.

After YEARS and YEARS of looking for a good solution to scattered litter, I finally gave up and got myself a robot vacuum cleaner. This is BY FAR the best solution to the kitty litter problem! I run the robot cleaner at least twice a day, once at 6 just before I get up in the morning (no crunching of cat litter under my feet when I go to the bathroom) and again at 6pm just before I get home from work. I also run it after the kitties use the toilet just to clean up any kitty litter they tracked around the box. Trust me, this is the BEST decision I've ever made! I was SO SHOCKED at the amount of dirt and cat hair the robot cleaner picks up, which means all these years I've been living in filth without ever knowing it. My robot cleaner also has a mopping function, so now all my floors are so clean and hair and litter-free that I wouldn't hesitate to eat off them. Trust me, get yourselves a robot vacuum cleaner - it'll save tons of work and your floors and carpet will be FINALLY clean!

Onto my second month as a cat mom. Started with dust-free bentonite as I thought the texture was closest to outdoor sand. My cat used to be a stray, so I was afraid that he wouldn't know it was his toilet if I used anything else. Now I'm using tofu litter and I'm glad that Latte has transitioned perfectly into using it. I have to say, the change was instant! As soon as I started using tofu, my floor is not dusty anymore. Bottom of my feet is grey no more and I don't have to wash it 100 times a day. Tracking has also become next to none. Previously, even with the anti-tracking pads, bentonite got everywhere as it's round and rolls around easily, often even to unexpected far corners. Now, the few tofu pellets that got out were all trapped in the pad. Had to sweep the area around the litter box multiple times a day. Ever since I switched to tofu, it's been several days that I didn't even touch the broom and dustpan. Tofu litter is definitely a game-changer for me. Thinking of trying pine pellets in the future too.

I never have heard about tofu kitty litter before. Do I have to order it on line. My cat is 9 years, old. I use Slide kitty litter now and it makes a lot of dust. Any ideas how to transition her. She also was born with her left-front paw curled up. She doesn’t know she is handicapped and can get around like any other cat. It’s funny, though, that she moves her curled up paw as if she is digging in the kitty litter as if it is covering it up! 😃

A cat shelter manager once told me that they only use a corn or soy based litter because all litter gets stuck on paws and fur and as cats clean themselves they ingest the litter, which can cause intestinal blockage in some cats if the litter is clay based. I immediately switched to “World’s Best Cat Litter“ which is a corn based product that creates loose clumps which are easily scoopable in a litter box. I have used it for a couple of years now. Something else I like is that it tends to stay in the box better than clay and there’s no dust or residue to deal with.

Hi! A vet here, the world’s best cat litter is fine but you need to make sure to clean and dry the litter box regularly. Corn can be contaminated with a mold that produces toxins which can lead to neurologic and cardiac issues. The issue is a litter box is a moist environment and there have been many cases of cats becoming ill and dying being tied to this specific litter.

After seeing Mallory's other content on litter, I decided to do some testing since even 100% dust free clay was a mess and was reducing air quality (I thought I was allergic to my longhair, turned out it was just the litter). I was looking for something cheap and easy to maintain. I tried various types of litters, giving the current best option in one box and a new "test" litter in another for several weeks. Eventually found the combination of disposable cardboard litter pans, lined with kitchen garbage bags, and placed in larger plasic bins all on the honeycomb mats worked really well. Kicked litter and occasional over-the-edge accidents just end up in the platic box and are easy too clean. Every other week I replace litter in one of the two boxes. Often this just means pulling the garbage bag and lining with a new one. If its a mess, then I just dispose of the whole cardboard box. Kitty and I both like World's Finest Tracking or Multicat (unscented): Clumps well, corn-based, inexpensive; satisfactory on odor. Some arm & hammer deodorizer can help in the second week. Thanks Mallory, you inspired me to find a much better solution.

My little cat of 16 yrs recently started drinking water from the bowl on occasion but has been a constant paw drinker for most of her years, and still is! She would also drink from the side that gave her the best view in case any other of my other cats wanted a drink, she could bat them away until she was finished. She weighs just over 5lbs, and actually came out of the woods to eat. Then one day, she brought her kitten... kittens having kittens... all four cats found in the woods got fixed, and needless to say adopted! None of them had any interest in the woods and became happy house cats...our happy ending ♥😺😺😺😺

well I thought I will share my tips as an owner of cats for over 20 years..I used to use clumping litter thinking it was the best since that is what we used in my mothers house.. but when i moved out to live alone and eventually married and had kids I couldn't stand the dusty paw prints everywhere (especially on our dark and black furniture) the clumpy clay cat littler is absolutely the worse since it sticks to their fur, even the "dust free" options I still found dust from the littler around the house and the box SO...my solution was actually get wood pellet litter. It is a little more work to clean it out (i won't specify here) but it is cheaper, and since the pellets are so large the don't stick to their feet and they don't track it around everywhere..as for "dust" usually it's not so dusty unless you didn't clean it for a while and the dust is more like , saw dust rather then thin fine dust...so I find it much easier to clean, I don't use a mat underneath I just keep a small broom and swipe around it whenever they dig and throw some of the pellets out. overall since I changed to this type of litter my house is SO much cleaner and much less dusty, when I'm on top of swiping the "fly away" pellets I absolutely do not find it around the house, and I don't have dusty pawprints on my furniture anymore. PLUS it's better for the cats since it won't stick to their feet makes sure they won't eat or ingest it when cleaning themselves! for me it was 100% worth the transition.

Whisker stress might be why the cat uses his paw. Make sure the fountain or bowl is wider than the span of the cat’s whiskers. Whiskers are very sensitive and pressing them on the sides of a bowl might be an issue. I also had a cat who ate with his paws. He lived on the streets for a while and I think the paw was used to get things out of the garbage or to retrieve some morsel from a narrow space. He would sometimes take a -awful of kibble, bring to his mouth and eat out of ‘hand’. This guy was so good, he could retrieve a tuna can from the garbage with that paw without any noise. He could pull it straight out so no one could heat him. 😺

During the last 28 years of multiple cat ownership, I have seen more than one of my cats put their paw in the water, but not to scoop and drink. I currently have one that puts his paws in the water so much so that I have to change his water bowl more often. It's because most cats prefer moving water to still water. In between water bowl changes, cat water bowls are gonna get cat hair laying on the surface. Cats are sometimes sloppy eaters and will drop bits of food in the water, etc etc. Cats aren't dumb. They like fresh, clean, moving water. That's why cat fountains are so popular. And if you happen to have a leaky faucet in your house, and your cat likes to drink from it, that's why.

On the licking of water with the paw: Our Lucy does this every time she drinks. She was 6 months old when we adopted her (together with male cat of the same age) in March of this year and she did this from the beginning. She is sometimes cautious but in general a very outgoing and loving cat. She was bottle-fed and is very attached to us and very much in love with my husband. We also adopted a young dog in June and she is the one that accepted him first. All of our 3 cats go outside during the day, allthough she prefers to stay home most of the time and then again, she brings most of the dead mice home. So, I would think she feels quite comfortable with everybody in the house and is just a lovely, lovely cat. When she drinks she starts with her paw and finishes by licking the water from the opposite rim of the bowl. She drinks from the big cat bowl and from the dog bowls in the living room and in the bedroom. Three ceramic bowls of different sizes. We just thought she's a bit extra with the paw licking but now I realize that she is also the only one who "buries" the food and especially her poos like there's no tomorrow, creating most of the scatter 🙂. The other two cats do not bury their poo and sometimes she buries it for them...

My cats like the top entry litter box but I got this litter box for them when they were really young so it’s pretty much all they have had. I switched the this box because we moved and the person who owned the home was concerned with spray so I had to accommodate their request and thankfully the cats had no problem getting in there. They use the top to jump onto the windowsill so they it is a multi tool for them. They usually stick their head in the opening so if they did have to look for an attacker they could easily see out. The cats have never tried to attack one another in the box so I think in general it feels like a safer area for them. My cats were also a bonded pair so that does help. When my cat had a cone on, I just removed the lid and it worked just fine. All we really cared about was the high sides. Litter will get out of the box no matter what but it is less than I had before.

I once had a cat who used a glass of water to wash herself. It was amazing to watch her fastidiously dip her paw into the glass and thoroughly wash her face, ears, etc. I think she did it because she had very long fur and it was easier than creating enough saliva to get the job done. I have had many cats over the years, including those who dip their paw into the water and lick it off. I have observed that there are many different techniques cats use to drink, and in my opinion, it simply comes down to their personal style. i couldn't disagree more with your last sentence. i find this fascinating. my hypotheses is, that when kitties grow up they learn some survival strategies with their mother or siblings, possibly even after, and it becomes their preferences. i think there is for sure more at play than simply survival adaptations, like just individual preference regarding flavours and such. but i bet a proper scientific study with a good enough sample size and controlled environments would be incredibly enlightening. especially if they take the cat's intelligence into account as well. cats mostly decide what to eat by smell, and they are heavily conditioned by what they ate as kittens within a certain week span. water, might have similar characteristics. it's just fascinating how quirky and adept these lovely fluffy agents of death can be.

@@asky314 Petkit has some very quiet water fountains on sale just now. They're plastic in the shape of a cube. Single and multi cat use. Under $25 if I recall correctly. Fountains can be ridiculously expensive so I pick up a few when I find a good deal. I just plugged a couple in yesterday; so far, so good. The only downside is that fountains need a good cleaning a couple times each month. The filters on fountains become a repeat purchase, but I find that a religiously cleaned fountain ( and motor) doesn't really need a filter nor additive to the water.

I always assumed my cats used the "lick a paw" method for drinking water when the dish they were drinking from (or other environmental factors, such as lighting) made it harder to determine where the top of the water started. My cats don't do it frequently but certain water bowls seem to cause that behavior specifically.

I wish my cats liked pellet style litter. One of my cats only lines fine soft litters, it was so hard to fine a low tracking non-clay litter. I would use the sustainably yours litter that's on the best clumping litter list, but it tracks like crazy! I don't really want to toss out all my current litter boxes to get high sided pans just to use a new type of litter... I ended up going with Okocat delicate paws litter. It still tracks but not as bad as Sustainably yours.

My Cleo is a big scatters so every time sho poops she covers her poop in every grain of sand in the box so I realy need to use the back cover of the litter box. Otherwise after every use half the sand would be outside the litter every time she uses. I also put some vinil material under and round the litter to gatter her sand of her paws. It work realy great for me. I tend to the chippest litter sand I can find. I rather gave her more expensive food then expensive litter sand or palets

I wish I could teach our boys to jump out the side of the litterbox that is lower. . .and where the mat covers best. .. nope. . .they jump out the sides. One of them is a vigorous digger, the other paws constantly at the sides for whatever reason (and can't bury to save his life). High sides are a MUST. Larger box is a MUST as well, even though our 10lb lad seems to be swallowed whole by it, the 11.5lb lad seems much happier with a bigger box. He is capable of using smaller boxes, but why make him feel cramped?

This is a different topic, but I don't know how else to reach you. I just adopted a 8 month old kitten from the humane society last week, and we have him in our upstairs bathroom with all he needs. He has access to our hallway (I have a tall gate) during the day. Today I opened a bedroom door for him to explore more. We're keeping him in that area until after Christmas for his safety, and wellbeing of our decorations downstairs. He is microchipped and will be an indoor kitty. Do we need to have him wear a collar? Thank you!
@AllAboutCatsYT Жыл бұрын
Hi! I don't think your cat needs a collar when walking around the house! Cats generally prefer going collar-free, and it doesn't benefit you much, either. I would recommend letting him go naked!

Ive been looking for a pellet litter thats cheaper than tofu litter but still doesnt track much. Tracking is my biggest no no for litter. I care a lot less about odor control and clumping ability. I care a LOT about tracking And a big NO to pine pellets. Once they are peed on they turn to powder and that powder tracks everywhere!

Help! My oldest COVID baby, Nala, is 3 yrs old, she has started within the last 6 months to go pooh about every 3rd one to do it on the floor around their boxes. When she does go in one of the boxes she tries but can never cover it up. Our other feline, Macee, does everything she is supposed to. My husband and I clean the boxes at least 2-3 times a day as needed. Please advise!!!

Years ago when I had three old cats I started experiencing litter tracking. Had no problems prior with it. Next thing I knew it was in my bed and everywhere else. I thought it was due to my cats getting old. Got new cats and same thing was happening. I had not switched litter brand or style. They changed something so now it is awful. Tried new brands, same thing. Hated pellets and clay. Cats hated them too. Back to the normal litter and scatter throughout my house. I'm upset that you didn't have something new to try for this that would work for me. I was so hopeful. Still a good video.

Don't use vacuum cleaners to clean up litter because it will void the warranty? I've never heard that before. Would I not use the vacuum to clean up spilled rice grains or sugar? Same difference. 🤷🏼♂️ Answer to viewer question: my best friend's cat scoops up her FOOD with her front paw. I forget which one. I don’t know if she drinks the same way. My cat drinks water and eats food "normally."

I use that type of litter too. I found it would get embedded in the mesh style litter mats and very hard to remove. So I now use a silicone litter mat that has ridges. It's much easier to clean. I also place rubber tub mats behind the litter box to collect scattering litter that sprays over the box. Very easy to clean those.

Every time I watch your videos I see litter that’s too low so clumps don’t form and stick to the bottom of the tray, I also see water bowls next to, or too near food. I cringe and feel sorry for those cats in the video. Cats prefer water well away from food and as far away from litter tray as is possible. Litter should be higher so clumps actually form.

I have to disagree on the box size. Most cats use the box 3-4 times every 24 hours. Feed them less, they go less. That said: Litter boxes are marketed to people, not cats. Cats prefer open boxes with lots of square inches. The cute little huts they sell are too small. They would make a better cat hooch with a blanket inside than a toilet. Cats do not like to go in the same spot every time. They need more room. A box that is only the length of a cat from nose to base of tail forces them to go too close to the same spot. This increases the bacteria they carry on their paws - which is septic. That's why we get a near instant red sore result if we play with a cat and it scratches us. Its a septic reaction to dirty paws/claws. Even if you scoop daily - I scoop at least twice daily - the litter material will quickly become polluted in a smaller box. A larger litter area will make the cat more comfortable and will help with the spread of bacteria around your home.

@00101001000000110011 Жыл бұрын
either she is a dirty gal that doesn't bother or yes.. i would be more inclined to assume a problem is to be found. cat's normally cover their faeces and urine to literally cover its smell, leaving the smell can mean their death as predators and competition will spot it easily and possibly track them.

Cats who drink straight from faucets and it splashing all over their face never made sense to me lol 😂. It's hilarious that they have cat water fountains to resemble faucets so cats can have a "real faucet" experience drinking fountain 😂I think probably for conservative cats who prefer paw examination/sniffing water experiences from the cat's perspective gulping and lapping may be too messy or goes down the wrong tube too easily. While standing up and dipping the paw, it's less likely to splash on whiskers and fur and go down the wrong tube. I think there's also just a certain type of cat who is very skeptical of water and wants full control and examination rights to the water through paw inspection vs. the more liberal cat who craves spontaneity and a good greedy gulp of the goods. So basically a very thirsty cat lol. I guess the skeptical cats don't mind the extra paw-salt flavor 😂 probably is like ramen soup 😂. Neither of my cats like splashing water, and barely like the smooth rippling fountain I got for them. Very picky kitties but the sweetest. I think if I was a cat I would be the conservative cat who's like "what exactly is water?" I think it's very healthy to be skeptical of water. It doesn't really make sense when you think about it. Have to sniff and examine each time, digesting something that even upper level hydrology equations fail to explain. Could make the most reasonable of us very hesitant, skeptical and conservative to need something that makes no sense. I relate to that.
