After trying many kinds of finer ground litter, I had to switch to pellet style litter 5 years ago because all the finer ones made one of my cats constantly sneeze and her eyes water. I tried the Breeze system, paper pellets, tofu pellets, and wood pellets. With the paper ones, I couldn't find all the smelly urine-soaked paper, so I had to throw it all out every few days. The tofu pellets didn't clump very well, so it also got completely changed out every few days. The Breeze pellets were a nice size and had no pointy edges but they were very expensive and difficult to get in Canada (this was 5 years ago). Plus, it incorporates a pee pad because the pellets don't absorb liquid, which is another expense. I finally settled on wood pellets. I don't like that the edges are somewhat jagged but my cats use it without any issues (no injuries). It also has a strong wood smell when you first fill the box but that disappears after a couple of days and my cats don't seem bothered by it. I actually buy ones marketed for wood stoves because they're much cheaper than ones sold specifically for animal use. I just check the website to make sure they're safe for litter boxes. It controls urine smells very well because the pellets disintegrate into sawdust when wet and then dry out and fall to the bottom of the box. With poop smells, it depends on if they bury it enough. I use a sifting litter box and it takes less than 5 minutes to sift 3 boxes. Wood pellet litter isn't perfect but no litter is and it works well for my cats, especially the one. No more sneezing and watery eyes for her.

Now, I am a litter and litter box connoisseur 🧐 I have 3 cats that stink the entire house when they poo. Thing that seems to work best for me is CATS PRIDE clumping. I keep a large bag of cheaper litter for topping off. Plus....the thing that i recently discovered is PROBIOTIC additive. I have 5 litter boxes so 2 - $8 BAGS was needed. Worth every penny. BIG DIFFERENCE in stank control! Its a silicate with probiotics. And I use jumbo sized pan liners with a dusting of BAKING SODA. In case of leaks, I like to use PEE PADS placed on the bottom the the box. Then the bags. Next the baking soda. Then litter. Then probiotics. Re: the liners..... Price vs weight is not a good way to compare cost. Rather, cost vs volume is a better indicator. Whether you use clay or whatever litter, you would fill your box up to the same level, producing the same volume. So clay litter would weigh a lot more than grass. Personally, I use both clay and wood, with clay being in the garage and wood for the indoors. The wood litter weighs much much less. The cat prefers the clay litter by far.

The reason wood litter has such a small market share on Chewy is probably because most of us who use it buy the huge bags of kiln dried pellets from the local feed store! Sometimes our rescue has the officially "cat litter" wood products donated and there's truly no difference. We find that wood pellets cover the urine smell better than clay but of course, they do nothing for the poo.

When my kittens were young, an "expert" at the pet store directed me to a non-clumping clay litter. Within a week, I knew I wanted something else due to little poopy paws. I ended up using grass seed litter. The odor is slight and is more of an outdoorsy, natural smell instead of, again, poopy. It absorbs the ammonia odor, and that has never been a problem. There is some tracking, but these are soft, tiny seeds that are easily vacuumed and not crumbled rocks like you have with clay litter. It is somewhat expensive, but it lasts a long time. I've recommended it to anyone who will listen.

Sarah, I thank you so much for this video. Please see health issue below I just want to add some thing to the information for the corn/cassava type cap litters. I have an oriental shorthair kitten he is around seven months of age. He has exhibited asthma type allergies to the grass cat gravel that I really like. So I thought I would change off to sustainably yours the one you pictured in your video. I totally agree with you on the dust that seems to go everywhere not from them going to bathroom, but from tracking it out in their feet. That being said, I had a problem with my oriental shorthair with switching his litter to Sustainably Yours Multi Cat. He suddenly became constipated, and would cry, and his diet had not changed at all. I was seriously getting ready to have the vet do all kinds of tests to figure out why he was so constipated, no matter how much he ate and how he would just cry before trying to go to the bathroom and not being able to. He finally passed a hard stool, and my vet had said to capture it so I did in a Ziploc. Much to my surprise I saw the gravel in his stool, so I pulled it apart in the bag and was packed with that aka fine yellow dust inside it. I was explaining this to A friend of mine before going into the vet the next day and we thought oh my gosh this kitty litter is a starch and because it’s such a fine dust it gets on his coat and stays on his paws, and he licks it all off, and he’s constipated from the very kitty litter he’s trying to go to the bathroom in. I mediately switched kitty litter and within a couple days back on the grass gravel. He was fine and was able to go to the bathroom and I was so relieved. I saved myself a lot of vet bills too and happy to see he wasn’t in pain anymore. So in my long story, please, please mention in your videos that this could be a very issue for other peoples cats and their health going forward. I see that sustainably yours now has a thicker density to their product. Maybe they know this is an issue. Thank you for all you do and I hope I can save someone’s kitty from this issue going forward.

I prefer the silica crystals over clay. True, they are pricey but worth it. With the clumping litter, one of my two cats loves to bury the bejesus out of his waste which breaks up the clumps of pee. I believe that the litter only clumps up once. After some time, the clumping litter acts more and more like the bargain clay litter. The crystals act as a desiccant which mummifies the poops rendering them well... odorless like a mummy. With two cats, two bags of Fresh Step Crystals in a jumbo litter box can last a month between changes. I edited this to include the tracking us very low compared to the clumping litter with it tiny granules.

I have been using the "World's best Cat Litter" and was reasonably satisfied with it, until recently. It doesn't clump at all but get soaked in a large area and remains flat which makes scooping more tedious. It is mot dusty but does track a bit. I don't know what to try next? The wood litter shown in this video seems to have pellets as well as powder...do the pellets break as they are rummaged through?

Another tip, use doggy poop bags to hand grab the poop from litter if you're using a chunky litter that doesn't sift through a scoop well!

If you're going to use wood / pine, it works best with a sifting box like the Breeze system.

I use Tidy Cat Low Dust with Fresh Step odor control. It's in a big yellow bag. She seems to prefer it, and the odor control is great. Also, clean your cat's litter box(es) every day.

I use two kinds. Clumping clay in a Litter Robot and then also a Tidy Cats Breeze system which is a pellets and pee pad system. The Breeze is no dust and very low tracking. Some pellets end up coming out of the box but not nearly as bad as clumping litter in a traditional box.

I've been using Sustainably Yours (corn) for a number of years. It is highly recommended by Jackson Galaxy. It is not the best with odor control, however it is the very best when it comes to clumping. Nothing compares. As long as it's cleaned out every day, it's close to perfect. Note: when I scoop the litter, I spray Nature's Miracle and it does a great job absorbing odors.

Thank you so much for this video. I would love if you could break down what they claim the can do or what they are for. Especially ARM & HAMMER, TIDY CAT and CATS PRIDE. They advertise: clumping, tight clumping, non-clump, 20% lightweight, 50% lightweight, multi cat, 10 day odor, baking soda, easy slide, unscented, scented, premium .... my head hurts shopping for litter. 😵💫

Currently using Naturally Fresh Ultra Odor Control walnut litter. I like the smell of it, it does good odor control, and I think my cats like it better as well. The one who was not covering his litter started to cover it more. I did a gradual transition from World's Best. However. It is duuuuuusty. I have dust covering about a 5ft radius on everything in the room the litter is in. So, I'm looking to switch. Probably will try pea husk based on this video.

I have 3 cats. Really wanted to switch to wood pellet litter. One cat responding well. The other 2 hated it. I tried over 3 months to slowly progress to pellet litter. One cat pooped in an empty litter box I had sitting near their other boxes rather than use the pellet litter. I do still have 2 litter boxes with the pellets because one of my cat will occasionally use it to pee in

The drawback to the silica crystals is that it turns from it's nice white to yellow due to the urine no matter how many times you stir it up as per the directions. People say you can go up to a month before changing but that doesn't seem to be the case unless it's just a color changing thing and not that it's not still effective. Can anyone confirm this?
@CandycaneBeyond5 ай бұрын
That's gross 🤢
@cynnabunTV5 ай бұрын
I use the crystals, and we put some baking soda in the bottom of the litter, and that seems to help with what you're describing. The baking soda neutralizes the ammonia, and after about two weeks, I throw in a fresh scoop or two of the crystals as well. I hope this helps! I only have 1 cat, and we clean his litter at least once a day, so it doesn't get too bad.

Pea husk sounds interesting. It was rated highly but only had 22 reviews! That’s so few that me and 6 of my closest friends could game the ratings significantly either up or down. Compare that with tofu, another one of the less common choices but which still had over 1,300 reviews.

Contrary to what is said at 11:17, please NEVER flush any kind of cat waste (poop or litter) down a toilet. The bacteria that is often present is rarely eliminated by water treatment processes, which means it can make its way into our water, food, and us.
@dietschegroosmame35967 ай бұрын
My thoughts exactly 👍
@whiteknightcat7 ай бұрын
Wastewater treatment plants drain treated effluent into creeks and streams or use it for non-potable irrigation purposes. I would point out that waste from wildlife also makes its way into surface water bodies, yet nobody seems to have an issue with that.

I find the paper cat litter is super absorbant!! It swells when it is "used" and is easy to clean because you just scoop the chunks that have been used.
@SonicBoomC98Ай бұрын
I hate Clay litter. You miss a cleaning of it, and you have a clay brick, whether its clumping or not. I like the crystal litter. I think a lot of the clumping litters clump too hard or get too sticky. I've tried some of the non-clay clumping litters, and it didn't like the results any better. I worked extra late one week, I decided to wait until the next morning to scoop for two days, and they turned into a brick just like clay. Having several cats with several boxes really makes settling on a good litter more difficult
@ThePoxun7 ай бұрын
Not all paper litter comes as pellets like your sample. The paper litter brand available from my local store is actually more like small clumps of shredded paper pieces similar in size and shape to clay litter pieces and is significantly more dusty than the clay litters.

Hi, I'm wondering if you guys could create a list of wet cat food products that are not on the BDS list. I've been giving my cat Friskies for a year, but recently learned that Purina has been added on the list and I don't want to support mass genocide. If it's not too much a quick description and recommendations of them would be great. Your guy's video's are always so helpful and will continue to support the channel ❤
