It’s just to assert dominance. Housecats don’t have any real social hierarchy, but they do “rule” over certain territories, and they will occasionally smack another cat just to remind them low key that they are a guest in that particular spot of the house. When I had four cats, it was a learning experience to see who would smack who, and where. My cat Eddie used to get slapped around in the house, then he moved out to the shed, and then he got slapping rights and the other cats sort of tiptoed politely around the shed. The only exception was Myrtle the mom cat and she could slap down anybody, anywhere, anytime. I don’t know what triggered it, maybe some insubordinate body language but to me it looked like it was out of the blue. Never any real fights, never any hurt kitty feelings, they all seemed to understand the rules
