Cat Tip Tuesday: How Do You Socialize a Shy Cat?

Patience! Since I retired in 2004, we've taken in small "rescued dogs" and have used the same tactics. The older ones are so laid-back now that they help with the younger ones. Now, we have to set some limits (off limits), like the bathroom!

Will try more treats, have a 6yr rescue and after a year of ownership I still cant pet him

untamed or feral cats love soft gentle sounds. speak or sing softly. play gentle quiet music like wind chimes or harp, or perhaps birdsong video. take a long stick to play w/ them or pet them w/ from a bit of distance. let them relax and know that they need fresh clean water and wet food. if they are starving or stressed, they will be very thirsty and their stomachs must have wet food to digest properly. put out a blanket in the shape of a nest for them to curl up in. provide a dishpan w/ litter or buy a litterbox asap. all cats are good pets if you treat them kindly. never hit or yell, as they are not able to comprehend. good luck! ; ) that is all you must do... then simply wait.

I trapped a feral kitten almost 2 years ago. And she never did fully tame. BTW, she was about 10 weeks when I caught her, that's what the vet said. Also there was never any type of abuse. There were times within her first 6 months she was pretty relaxed and I thought she would fully come around, but it has since went in reverse. She still comes around and will even reluctantly let you handle her but that's just because I am the food source. She honestly just doesn't trust me and I have no doubt it's because she had no early socializing.i would never take in another feral kitten unless it were under 6 weeks. Granted I am not very experienced with cats. As a matter of fact she had a liter when she was 10 months old. I wasn't being irresponsible, I just didn't think it'd be so quick. I got her spayed very quick afterwards! Point of that story is I kept a kitten and interacted with it from week 1. That cat sticks to me like glue and is extremely affectionate. I treated both of them the same so it has to be the early socialization. There is no other answer
