CATACHAN DEVIL - NON SPOILER REVIEW!

Hi all Rho here! Today we review the Warhammer 40,000 novel "Catachan Devil" An Astra Militarum story by author Justin Woolley. As always my reviews are non-spoilers. I really encourage you to read the stories for yourself first, as that's the best way to enjoy the lore!

It's the obvious choice, but GW is too tone deaf lol It's unfortunate, since although I've built and painted like 4 squads of these lads, I want them to get more range, especially since the base box has no customization options You get 10 guys, including 1 sergeant (who can only take power sword and laspistol), the special weapon guy (for whom the flamer is the only choice), and the one guy with a vox caster on his back

I always enjoy a Catachan read or a Gaunts Ghosts, it is great seeing someone get it right with how soldiers work.

There was a great short story close to second addition called “small cogs” out of the Dark Imperium book. It was one of the best short stories capturing guardsman. Highly recommend it.

I love the Guardsmen novels as Tanith First and Only is my favorite 40K series. I would like some novels on the Harkoni Warhawks or Elysian drop troops as well more with the Tallarn Desert Raiders ad they don't get enough love. Cadians, Kreig, and Catachan get most of it recently and the Steel Legion got lots of love back in the day.

The book sucked. I LOVE the Devils, have a Catachan army, and this book is hot trash. Not a joke. I don't know what Rho's about on this book. It might be the worst Black Library book I've tried to read.

I've been debating reading this so im glad you made this video. Im all in all space marine fanboy but the Catachan were my favorite part of Pandorax so I was interested in this but needed the push and your video just did it. Thank you!

The moment i read my first Gaunt's Ghost omnibus i prefer Guardsman Story because they have more drama and character development especially if your favorite character dies...... Dan Abnett Kills your favorite characters that's why i love Guardsman stories

Without a doubt, Catachan Devil is one of the absolutely worst 40K novels I've read. The plot was so slow and boring that I ended up putting down the book 3/4 of the way through, and that was forcing myself to read that far. None of the human characters are likeable or interesting at all, the main character is so boring and bland for a Catachan, the outsider guardsman is one of the most completely insufferable 40K characters I've ever read, and aside from the Colonel's daughter and one other Catachan, the rest of the squad are essentially cardboard cutouts. The only saving grace was the Ork characters. The novel Straken is a superior Catachan book that has a far better plot, character development and enjoyable battle scenes. It's a shame that didn't get a sequel instead of this awful book being written.

Still don't understand why no Astartes recruit from Catachan can someone from GW please explain this i mean they should have a 90%success rate of becoming primaris and they are already nearly super human???$$$+++

This video made me think, who would win catachan or kreig. Then I realised how stupid that was, of course its the cats, they have plot armour and the kreig have anti plot armour. As long as thr kreig have a really painful and slow deaths, of course cats win, as long as the black dude dies saving the Italian one. And the kreig are not allowed personalities.

Black library has done a very good job of improving the general quality of their books over the last 15 or so years. This book is a throw-back to some of the worst from around 20 years ago. If you are looking for stereotyped characters, nonsense progression of plot, and political messaging, this is your book! I am going to provide no spoilers because if anybody really does want the pain and suffering that is slogging through this book, they should be welcome to that sort of suicide. 1st, I did the audio book, let's begin with with the performance, it's how you can tell Black Library wasn't trying here. Black library has made a number of books about this particular faction. In each of those books, the audio performance has a the same pronunciation of the name of the faction. kat-uh-kan This performance decided to change that for no reason. Sorry folks, the pronunciation of the name is part of the canon of the world of fiction. Stop trying to change things for no good reason. 2nd, if the author writes that a particular character speaks in a particular way, the reader ought to actually provide that type of speech. For some reason, this narrator decided not to do that. Let's address the story now. Life experiences tend to condition a person and to refine them. Difficulties in life serve to manage a person's immaturity and rough edges. This produces wisdom, a certain forbearance, and shows a character as a bit more mature. In the grim darkness of the 41st millennium, where this takes place, almost everybody has had a difficult painful existence. People have had to grow up fast. As a result, why does it seem like a good idea to portray all of the adults as particularly dense children? Nobody plans ahead. Nobody thinks a step or 2 before they take it. This is infuriating after a few chapters. . . and it keeps happening. There are no grown adults or thinking professionals in this book. The mistakes are childish, the actions of characters are performed as though tomorrow never actually comes. It's funny, because the Orks actually show more organizational management and maturity than the humans in this book. As for physical descriptions, we could use some extra work here. The descriptions are not in much depth considering these are unknown characters. When something is actually described, it's important to know whose perspective the description is being seen from. A building is different looking looking from an architect's point of view then it is from a military engineer's point of view, then it is to a brand new civilian recruits point of view. How the author writes what a character sees about another character informs you informs you not only about the character that's being looked at but also about the character noting the things that are important to them. I really wish this author would employ this differentiation. Regarding the military, a regimental colonel doesn't leave a lieutenant in charge when he takes off with 2 squads. A lieutenant is not in charge of a squad. Even in today's soft Army, lieutenants don't cut off colonels in regimental briefings and keep their rank. For you not in the military, understand that a colonel is an 06 rank and that a lieutenant is either an 01 rank or an 02 rank. The ranks go: 2nd lieutenant, 1st lieutenant, captain, major, lieutenant colonel, colonel. Also, please understand that much of what the military is about is safeguarding against the worst case scenario. It is about being prepared for when things hit the fan. It is not believable when military characters in your story are constantly being surprised by the most likely actions that the enemy is going to take. Credibility is dead from a military perspective. On to our political messaging. Have you ever wondered how many females you can insert into leadership positions within the 1st few chapters of a book? Question no more! The answer is a whole bunch. I am all for well placed, good, female characters in leadership positions whenever the story would benefit. This is not one of those cases. All of the female characters are smart, capable, awesome, and to be feared. It's a bit of nonsense. Females and males have people at both ends of the bell curve. There are smart women and dumb women. There are smart men and dumb man. Further, there are 2 known characters from this faction and unit (Marbo and Colonel Iron Hand Straken) and one of them seems to have been replaced. Our new and improved colonel is now apparently black instead of white and has a power fist instead of an augmetic hand. Whereas Straken was in great shape, the author REPEATEDLY reiterates the new colonel has unbelievably huge biceps, even for a Catachan. Get a life! It sounds like 1st graders arguing over who's dad can beat up whose. How about this? Let's go ahead and make brand new, quality characters who happened to be black. This would be a lot better of an idea than simply taking established characters and hacking them into different demographics. In conclusion, the book is bad. I have read every piece of literature on this faction in production from Black Library. This is clearly the worst. I suggest nobody read this book as it is a waste of time.

I really did not like the second half of this book. The new kid was given his knife, he didn't earn it. Same with his red band. By the end of the book they have the Catachans accepting a scrub into their ranks when they should have rejected him for the mistakes he made. It felt like an all pro, legends only basketball team signing a midget in a coma. Poor character development and even poorer attempt to expand lore by watering it down. This book got a 2/5 from me.
