Catacombs Board Game Review - Still Worth It?

While I understand the criticism of having too many icons and them becoming a bit overwhelming I do have to say the very handy cheat sheet at the end of the rulebook mitigates this issue, especially when compounded with the fact that, especially on the heroes side (and the overseer is supposed to be the more experienced player), usually you don't have too many of them to keep track of: the starting ability and equipment and only a couple of ways to acquire more during a campaign. The expansions sure do add a lot but they assume knowledge of the base game. That said, neat review nicely packaged.

Never really experience aimlessness but montony yes…games largely depends on who you play it with and how rowdy they get. Dungeon fighter is another game like this.

I love this games, but the setup is a real pain in the bollucks. And the more expansions I include the more overbearing the setup and rules overhead gets. But the art (of the 3ed) is tremendous and my kids really enjoy the tactical flicking in the game. And this is one of the few games where upgrading to neoprene mats really means something.

What also is a massive pile of dogshit, if i may use your wording, is the fact that all the special room cards rules are in the rulebook. There's plenty of space on the cards themselves for some quick refefence on what you can do here, but no, they leave the card empty for you to flip through the rulebook(s!) And find what the damn room does and how much everything costs. Why are those cards half empty?! It bothers me every time i think of that game.

Nah, not this one...I have played first edition and was underwhelmed so I would not pay for a new edition even if it looked great, but the cartoony art shown here is right off putting to me. Also you call it a blend of dexterity and RPG. No it isn’t there’s no role playing here, just dungeon crawl cliches. Stick to Caveman Curling.

I was also turned off by the art I. The original edition. There’s something about the kwanchai Moriya art that is much more engaging and friendly. My kids really love the art and the game (and Catacombs v Castles) has made for many fun family game nights.
