Homework Question Answer: Yes, AgBr will be precipitate AgCl = Ag⁺ + Cl⁻ ini amount of Ag⁺ = Cl⁻ = √(1.78 * 10⁻¹⁰ ) = 1.3 x 10⁻⁵ After adding 100ml Volume will be doubled, Concentration will be halfed Final amount of Ag⁺ = Cl⁻ = 6 x 10⁻⁶ Similarly, NaBr = Na⁺ + Br ⁻ Final amount of Br ⁻ = 0.03 / 2 = 0.015 [Ag⁺][Cl⁻] = (6 x 10⁻⁶)² = 3.6 x 10⁻¹¹ < 1.78 x 10⁻¹⁰ Therefore, AgCl will not be formed. [Ag⁺][Br ⁻] = (6 x 10⁻⁶)(0.015) = 9 x 10⁻⁸ > 5.4 x 10⁻¹³ Therefore, AgBr will be formed.

OUTCOME: agbr will be formed (all things in small letters as "a"doesn't get typed in my laptop and I use ctrl+V) Procedure: S = underoot(1.78 x 10^-10) s = [ag+] = [cl-] = 1.34 x 10^-5 Br- Concentration = 0.03 Moles of ag+ = 1.34x10^-6 br - = 3x10^-3 cl- = ag+ Net Volume: 200ml New Concentrations: 6.6x10^-6 = [ag+] 1.5x10^-2 = [br-] Qsp = IONIC PRODUCT for agbr : 1.5x6.7x10^-8 = 1.005 x 10^-9 1.005 x 10^-9>>>>>>5.4x10^-13 Thus agbr gets precipitated!

sir,,,,sometimes we treat weak bases (like Al(OH)3 and Mg(OH)2}as a strong electrolyte or salt when we do questions of solubility product why is it so? why do we do that?

My question sir, In N awasthi in some question, weak acids like C6H5OH, HOCl are given and reactions come out to be Eg - HOCl H+ + OCl- (1) OCl- + H2O HOCl + OH- They ask pH of say 0.1 M Ocl- solution? Sir, so are these questions from pH of weak acids or less concentration acids where we take into consideration the dissociation of water or to salt hydrolysis, but these are not salts? It took me a few minutes to see solution at back and realize how to solve such questions. Is this some hybrid?

Ionic product of AgBr is greater than its solublity product, hence AgBr will be precipitated.
