If there's one thing we've learned over the past few years of sailing around the world: There's no perfect sailboat! The catamaran vs monohull debate is mostly hype and we've done our best to stay away from adding to the noise.
When we heard our friends from Sailing Yacht Ruby Rose are thinking of selling their monohull to purchase a catamaran, we invited them to come crew with us...and that led to talks of cruising life in a mono vs a cat.
We were talking about it anyway so why not film and share? In this video we're discussing price and performance.
We hope you find this conversation based on our collective experiences helpful. If you're in the market to purchase a sailboat remember the Mantra: Spend Smart and Stress Less. Monohull or multihull...in the end the best boat is the one you can afford to purchase now.
⭐ After you hit that play button we'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below: What's you're preferred style of sailboat? Are you in the Monohull or Catamaran camp...or maybe you'd prefer to sail a mono but cruise in a cat? What's your favorite brand? It's always fascinating to read what draws each person to one type/brand/style of sailboat.

Another aspect of the debate that seldom gets addressed is the issue of beaching. Very, very few cats seem to be built with beaching in mind, but a number of the shallow-/swing keel monos come equipped with twin rudders so the boat can be beached and dried out. Their Southerly is one such boat. On the cat side, boats such as the Maverick and Antares are both explicitly designed to enable beaching. I suspect your Leopard, with its skegged rudders and shaft drives, would beach just fine, even if it isn't expressly encouraged.

I'll throw in my two cents having spent time on both. If you plan on living on it with more than two people Catamaran is hands down the best option. More stable, faster cruise on sail and it's basically a floating condo, can't beat it, no monohull can compete. If you're going bigger than 55ft you can probably get away with either

when you are averaging 6-7 knots, is that by sail only? or with engine assist? Also, for someone with sea sickness, which hull design is more stable on rolling and pitching?
@gonewiththewynns
@gonewiththewynns 4 жыл бұрын
That would be sail only. As for the sea sickness, some people say the motion of a cat is better while others say it’s more erratic. I think it’s best to sail on both in similar conditions and see which one works best for you 👍🏻

When I used to ride motorcycles often I was asked what is my favourite bike. My answer was always the same; the one I am riding now. My sense is it would be the same regarding sailboats. I own a monohull, a big fat bottomed girl, cutter rigged Bayfield 32 and for me, right now, everything considered, I love it. Either the boat suits my sailing habits, or my sailing habits suit the boat, but it works. I’m sure if I owned a cat I’d feel exactly he same. That said If I’m shopping for my next boat, price is a defining factor and would probably take the cat out of the equation, but if the boat has sails and Mother Nature is giving me some wind, I’ll still be thrilled.

so buy a Monohull if you want to sail and be safe(r) in rough weather, big waves and strong winds and buy a Catamaran when you are more planning of living in a huge area in the tropics and pray there is no hurricane? Cats have for sure more space but no, i just dont trust them on long hauls enough... thing is I actually never see a cat in the the North Sea or the Baltic sea but a lot here in Asia. Stay safe

im sorry you don't feel they are very stable. We feel they are very stable. The reason you don't see cats in the north sea orr baltic is because the marinas are not meant for cats. we have sailed over 10000nm in rough weather and big seas and run from hurricanes. Enjoy your monohull x

Let's be honest.....brutally honest.....IT'S ALL ABOUT THE COST!!!! PERIOD! EVERYTHING IS ABOUT THE COST! If a boat buyer has 100k they have 0 ability to buy a cat. Cats are outrageously more expensive upfront. I am talking in the 40ft range capable of crossing oceans. Sure it may be possible to find 1 cat that is 30 yo, open, with a bucket for a head and a hammock for a cabin for under $100k, but what are you going to live on?! I can give a endless examples and the bottom line is MMMOOONNNEEEYYY!!!!!!

It seems the comparison is always being made with both types being similarly sized....not fair. Of course a 43 Cat is superior to a 40 Mono except in deep water gale conditions. The comparison I would make is between a 40- 45 Cat and a 55-65 Mono. I think the " at anchor" space and comfort is similar in that context. As far as at sail? It depends on the type of motion you prefer. Regardless..nice video as usual by both couples and a interesting subject.

Not something I'm terribly interested in, mainly because I couldn't drag my wife on to a sailboat with a brace of Clydesdales, but informative nonetheless. Personally I think it's basically the Ford/Chevy debate. Everyone on each side thinks they have the better craft but you all did a really good job showing that the debate is really all about 10% and the other 90% is about equal. Good job you two, and keep the videos coming.

In a nut shell, cats sail ON the water, mono’s sail IN the water. Cats are faster, more spacious, better to entertain on. Monos are cheaper to own, safer in heavy weather, and Point marginally higher. They also cost less. After a Cyclone/Hurricane, you may see monos washed up on beaches, but you don’t see them flipped upside down like a turtle on their back. Cats are faster, much more spacious and deep down, I think 98% of us mono owners have a deep secret fantasy of owning a nice cat one day...
@ppumpkin3282

Pretty much it. But when I get my nice cat, it will be when my heavy weather sailing is over. Also Cats have shallower drafts. Also I've heard that Cats are not good upwind - and the difference is more than marginal - but I don't have my own experience on Cats.

A discussion that never gets old! We bought our monohull (Catalina 42) instead of a catamaran, simply due to price. We just couldn’t afford to even consider a catamaran. Really price point should be the standard for comparing sailboats, feet are subjective since cats are almost twice in area and more expensive. Maybe comparing a 43 ft cat vs a 50 ft mono would be better. The thing I liked the most of what you said is that catamarans retain more value, that’s important. Anyway I would like to know what you can get with 250,000 dlls in cats and monohauls . I liked your video a lot though. To be honest I had other channels that I preferred in the past but now you’re on the top of my list. You are great people.

The way I evaluate the relative values in comparing mono-hulls v. catamarans must include price per square foot and/or price per cubic foot. When you do that the catamarans often work out to cost less and are a better value. Also, I believe that all categories are not equal; and therefore, a weighted average to account for which factors are more important than others must be used. This weighted average is highly personal but look to what you do most often and what categories contribute to increasing your confidence in sailing or enjoyment at both anchor or sailing. Sailing Yacht Ruby Rose has videos which use five categories: safety & design, build quality, interior design, performance, and value for money. Their videos offer lots of valuable information. My issue is whether each category is of equal weight. Thanks for sharing.

Having sailed a 36' McGregor cat in the Marshall islands, three things: 1. No bruise sailing. Boat doesn't heel over anywhere like a mono hull. 2. Most stable position of heavy keeled monohull is on the bottom. Most stable position for most cats is just upside down. We could fill our cat with water and sail away. 3. Speed 4. Watched a long term cruising family jump over the side and swim to shore at an anchorage during a typhoon. Their boat was pitching an rolling too much to allow sleep. (Of course being on the shore watching their boat didn't make sleeping very easy either). Our Cat was just going thru some more gentle pitching motion. No roll. TWO HULLS TO CLEAN. While we had seen 22kts under sail, the normal cruise speed was more like 9kts and even then on some seas you had to watch jumping off the back of a wave into the face of another, risking pitchpoleing. Didn't enjoy passages as they, even with the numerous squalls, were boring. We didn't have an autopilot though so constant hand steering was required.

That wonderful keel on Ruby Rose makes her a my favorite monohull. I like heavy displacement mono and cat sailboats for their comfort in rough seas and their load carrying capacity, compared to low displacement ones. Speed is nice but it rates below a high displacement boat for cruising. If my choice was between a Southerly or a Lagoon of the same length, I would chose the Lagoon. My husband and I had this discussion for years. He was a 4th generation boat builder. Our first boat together was a small racing catamaran. The question of speed always made us lean towards the catamaran as our choice to circumnavigate the world. My best friend (husband) went to work one day & at the age of 50 died of a heart attack. My point is: do your homework... but, just go for it! These folks did and I loved their collaboration. ~ Love from a fellow Texas sailor💙

One thing that SV Delos found with their series on Cat vs Mono was the Cat sailors say you have to de-tune the sails a bit to keep the stresses down on a cat. With a mono it automatically spills wind by healing. The cat won't do that so the shrouds take on a lot more stress. This sounds like a wise discovery and ultimately it means the potential speed gap between a cat and a mono is less.

I loved this video on the Monohaul vs the catamaran.. I agree it is the most asked question when someone goes and buys a boat.. for personally I would choose the catamaran owners hull only because of the separation from the guests or family... I also get scared just looking at a monohaul on its side in the water it looks as though it's going to fall over😊 Thank you for sharing some beautiful pictures and this weeks amazing video... love b.c. you guys along with Miss Cleo and Singa💜💜💜💜💜💜💞💞💞💞💞💞😎😎😎😎😎😎💜🌺🍇🌺🍇🌺🍇🌺

I guess the living at an angle conversation will be in the comfort video. Although I like the look of a monohull, the 2 engines and flat sailing surface (okay, semi flat sailing surface) would sell me on the cat. 🐈 And the trampoline. Because it is a great place to sit.

My turn... Mono's are beautiful, cats are utilitarian. Cats are easier to sail, mono's require more attention especially when running. Don't buy an old fixed keeled cat (daggers and center boards point upwind better faster), they all sail sideways close hauled/reach. Wide hulls are slow, no matter what you buy, even worse on a mono (save IMOCA60's with canting keel). Always consider mast position and weight distribution on any vessel or you may find it impossible to balance the vessel on a sail, balance = speed and ease (your gonna get sick if you can't balance the boat). For live aboard's cats have mooooore room and you can see forever, and ever, and... (from the salon). Maintenance? MEH! It's a vehicle on a wet caustic UV infused environment, all will succumb to the sea...

Catamaran's have a lot of practical benefits. I can't help but think that you get less bang for your buck with them though in terms of quality. I'm paying 2x for many systems, such as engines, props, cabinetry. Most of the catamarans I see look like ikea condos on floats. It's really hard to find a catamaran which hits all of the criteria I'd expect in a price point I'm happy with. Monohulls just seem sturdier, and while smaller per foot, they cost less. It feels like the density of value/$ spent is higher on a monohull, but you have to put up with the various monohull negatives. This video doesn't make the decision easier XD. Cost, Performance, Safety, Comfort. Monohull, Catamaran, maybe a tie, catamaran. I would actually give the safety rating to the monohull. They are clearly designed for water, whereas catamarans are designed for comfort. Catamarans attempt to defy nature, while monohulls embrace it. Bouyancy is not something a monohull deals with so much as it embraces. I'd trust a monohull in a storm much more than a catamaran, which clearly has many more stress points and less capability for "wading" through the water. On the other hand, a sailboat can sink if punctured... Still, I think the odds of a boat threatening puncture is less than ending up in a moderate storm.

A conversation on which sailboat is best , Catamaran or Monohull , for that long and not turning into at least one call for a " Man overboard " is simply amazing ! Shows Sailors do have more fun ! I think for the question for survival is that a mono in a really bad storm , can flip all the way around and up again , were as a cat flips , and it is just holding on praying for help to arrive . Although very rare , thank God ! There was a movie about this in 2015 called "Abandoned " which took place near New Zealand . Your video was Great on a never ending subject !

@@nanderlizernanderlizer684 To have any real hope of avoiding a storm you need to be at 9-10 kts. Your basic trawlers have a hard enough time at 8. If time is of the essence you wouldn't have chosen sailing as it is. It has to be about the journey, even when it's slow, especially when it's slow.

If I was going to Europe from the USA I would want to be in a monohull...It's just my dog and I...I feel more safe in a monohull going long distance over 4 days...If a mono flips over it will right itself if a catamaran flips over from wind or high seas then its game over...

Wow interesting....I lived on a Catalina boat, sailboat, we sailed from LA to Catalina most weekends, the worst part is the tipping of the sailboat, Catamaran wins for me for sure....haha Wins Wynns!!!⛵🏝️⛵💙⛵💙⛵💙⛵💙⛵💙🤍💜💚💛🧡❤️💝💕♥️💖💗 and safety is the Cat for sure. Walking at midnight on a night sail without a moon is scary on a sailboat, the cat seems a lot safer. Plus......sun protection I have noticed with your cockpit is a super healthy factor....the sailboat was always unprotected, its not always fun, especially in 20ft waves in a storm, we Almost died, I think a Cat would have been so much safer.❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Nice seeing the four of you together again. Two great couples. It seems your having N&T crew on your boat has converted Nick to a catamaran as they are currently shopping for one. One misconception I would like to add to the debate about "extra costs for 2 engines on a cat". Let's say you change oil on an engine every 100 hours, for example. If you alternate the running your Cat engines, port side for 100 and starboard for the next 100, you are changing oil the exact same amount as on a monohull! You are just getting HALF the wear and tear. By the time you have to replace both engines, a monohull, under the same sailing conditions with a similar engine size, will have needed to replace their's twice.

NOOBS talking to NOOBS. Leopards are Motor Sailers. If you want to have to carry a full tank of fuel and more water than you need for your 2-3 day voyage (ie NZ to Fiji) then buy a tank like a Leopard 43. The Safest Hulls are those that get your voyage done the quickest (ie NOT A LEOPARD), fact, the longer you are at sea the more likely something catastrophic can occur. A Seawind is 8000lb less displacement than a Leopard and you loose next to nothing if not you gain that massive indoor outdoor fold up window area. And they are half the price. If you are a nancy boy then fine full your 700kg of Diesel, of which if you knew how to sail something like a seawind or any lightweight performance cat, you prob wont even need 10% of that, simply for docking. Learn how to sail. This is why NZ owns the Americas cup. Its part of of our school Curriculum to learn how to sail. Invest in that first, then buy the fastest yacht that meets your comfort requirements. Simple. Only idiots pay 50% more just because its a cat, that was such a dumb statement. Plenty of Cats are cheaper because they are not rocket science, less weight, more beam = safer ride. Also Seawinds for example use outboards which do not have legs sticking in the water causing drag. You can also wash them off with fresh water after each use saving $1000sss

Have recently found this channel, and really enjoyed catching up on your adventures. But this was the first episode I didn’t enjoy. I should have, as it was a great topic, between a group of clearly knowledgeable people. But for me was sadly ruined by Nikki continuously talking over everybody. Maybe it was the rum, or the novelty of her having someone other than Jason to talk to. But the poor guy barely got a sentence in. And when he did, he was NEVER allowed to finish it. Perhaps in any future such discussions, it would be better for Nikki to act as host, asking the questions and listening to others reply, before stating her opinion or summarising? Just a suggestion...

I remember Nick and Terysa, I believe they were in Charleston SC and encountered a little snow. Nick was not happy and Terysa was adorable, celebrating the snow. "Winter snow storm hits the boat Ep.43" kzbin.info/www/bejne/jJiTY2iYftBgha8 Revisiting: It's a fourteen minute Nick rant with. "... it will never be a enema bag," as the quote of the episode. People just don't get it. You can't compare a 40 foot mono and a 40 foot CAT and then say that a cat is 50 percent more expensive. To make a fair comparison you have to look at the living space, square footage. To get the same size (living space) mono, compared to a CAT, you have to look at a way bigger mono. For example, to compare a 40 foot CAT with a mono, you will have to look at least at a 60 or 70 foot mono haul, if not even larger and then the costs, space and comfort will be about the same.

So this "suckage zone????.... Apparently an industry term. I've done a bit of research and I found one definition defining suckage as "negative wind", whatever that means??? To me it sounds perhaps like suckage is a reference to the sucking (holding back) performance the boat exhibits in a certain true wind condition. So again, what is this "suckage zone"??? Is it simply that the boat's performance "sucks" within defined wind directions Thanks

I love you guys , you make great videos, but you got a few things wrong on this one. Like you said in one video , you have been sailing just for a few years and no previous experiences. I think you uses some information from the internet that is completely wrong, and wound be great if you can fix it. One that is very untrue is that cats can flip but it is better than Monohulls that will go to the bottom of the ocean. I read this also. Pure propaganda from Catamaran’s manufactures or sellers. It is extremely difficult to sink a good monohull just because of bad weather. It can flip , more difficult than a cat, but will flip back because of the weight on the keel and if by any chance it looses the keel, it will be upside down just like a cat and will not sink either. Perfomance cats are fast, but are more likely to flip. Cruiser cats are not that fast especially if you over load it. Also there are many diferentes models of Monohulls . For example a Aluminium Monohull is super safe and can be faster than a cat. The topic is very complex, but been brief, cats win in space and comfort big time, but in moderated seas. It is the Cadillac of sailboats. But if you want to go anywhere in the world, your need a 4 x 4 of the seas. A aluminum center board, like a Alubat, Allures , Alliage, Garcia and others. You can go from the shallow banks of Bahamas all the way to Antártica!!!!!!! I still like you guys ok !!!! :-)
