Also many people call bricks “clay” due to earlier versions. I was surprised that Rodney did not address this. Probably because it is not official. Or that he didn’t mention it was once called Settlers of Catan. Calling it Catan seems weird as everyone used to call it “Setters”

My story. I am an avid magic the gathering player. One day in 2009 I was looking for something mtg related and came across bgg. That lead me to settlers of Catan. It is the first “designer” board game I bought. I now own over 100 board games. Most expensive google search ever. I introduced my brothers one friend to settlers and it blew his mind so much that he now has over 600 games. Crazy times.
@mrbastos4 жыл бұрын
similar story here, but early 2000s and I see some of the guys at "the shop" playing a game they called sheep. They taught it to me, and eventually bought it. We would play it all the time. lots of great times. Despite moving on, I still keep my copy because the guys may want to play it again some time.

Something similar happened to me. Once at lunch at work I saw a group of friends playing Tsuro, I asked if I could join and now I own around 20 different board games, and since we all play together really often we try to keep different board games from the rest, unless we really enjoy playing the game so much that we end with two copies in the group to play with family or similar.

Nice video! Thanks, Rodney! I've been playing this game forever, so much so that I haven't read the rulebook in years! Funny story: when I first played Catan, I hated it. Turns out that the friend you taught me the game was so minded on winning that his attitude scared me away from this game. Couple years later, played Catan again with my wife and new friends who were more laid back. Loved it! Went to buy it the next morning. Catan has been a staple of my house's boardgaming habits for 13 years now. :)

The attitude of the people at the table makes SUCH a difference doesn't it? Many of my favorite games I know I wouldn't have enjoyed if I had played with a disagreeable group. So glad you found a more enjoyable group for Catan :)

I don't care what the tabletop snobs say. Catan is a great game and is what brought my family and me into board gaming. Of course there are better games out there, but there is a reason why Catan has held its position as a modern classic for long. As a newcomer into the tabletop world, I found a lot of gatekeeping and elitism in the board game community at first, especially when I told people I liked Catan. It was really annoying. We need more people playing board games, and if Catan has been a gateway into the hobby for many former casuals like myself, there is no reason to chastise anybody for playing and liking this game. Play and like whatever you want. Board games are to be shared with literally everyone.

I agree. Catan is still fun with the right group.

It looks like the developers did a better job at balancing the first game map as well. Red is no longer the only color that starts off with access to both ore and wheat. In fact it looks like all four players have access to all five resources. I still have memories of got to randomize the setup for this reason; 15 years after this game helped bring me into the hobby.

I didn't realize those changes had been made - neat!

I am referring to the 25th anniversary edition and comparing it to the version I learned back in fall of 2004.

At what point did "Settlers of Catan" become just "Catan?" At any rate, I played this once and it just wasn't my cup of tea, but I found a 4th edition copy at a thrift store and couldn't let it go. Now, I've got some friends coming over who I'm going to teach how to play, and if they like it I'll gift them the game. This rules refresher was clear and concise, as usual. Thanks Rodney!

@@WatchItPlayed They did! But more surprisingly, so did I. I used a variant called "friendly robber" that changed the experience enough that I actually enjoyed it. Raising my BGG score from a 5 to 7!
