I agree. The problem when informing oneself about this surgery is there is so much variability in individual situations and so much hype about the premium lenses, that one gets diverted from the main purpose of cataract surgery. Monofocal is the most popular choice and not only because it's the least costly.

I picked monofocal lens. No regrets. Sharpest distance and best contrast and night driving. (age 73) Great dim light and no halos with night driving. No glasses for driving needed and cell phone usable just not sharp. Only need readers for reading. There are negatives for all multifocal lenses especially when you get older. As you age the light reaching the retina naturally decreases and multifocal lenses make it worse.
@missmonasuzette8 ай бұрын
Which lenses did you choose? Your results were my plan. I got my first (dominant) eye done and it was supposed to be set for distance. It is the Johnson and Johnson Eyhance lens, which gives a bit more depth of field. Day after surgery I could see up close for about 4 feet, like an eagle. Doc kept insisting he set it for distance and said my eye needed more time to heal, because distance continued to be blurry. I've been back to see him 5 times in the 5 weeks since he did my dominant eye. Last visit he sent me home with a contact for distance in my left, non dominant eye. He has never once explained what happened. He knows he messed up. I'm not a dummy, and I know if I can see my phone and laptop sharply, that there was obviously some kind of mistake made. I was expecting to need reading glasses. (age 68). I now feel that my only option is to have the non dominant eye set for near. For me, near with the Eyhance means that I can see for about 4 feet from my eyes in sharp focus. I'm glad for that, but boy, has this ever been a disappointing journey and to be honest, I'm afraid that he's going to mess the other eye up.

This is the kind of information patients need. From the comments below, I see that I am not the alone in finding the patient education at "Eye Centre" outfits is very poor. They are all about up-selling you from the insurance-covered monofocal lens to a premium lens. The "lens specialist" that talked to me used no technical terms, identifying the lenses by brand name! The most precise information I got was how many $ per eye. Although the doctor in the video sports a UW School of Optometry crest, sadly he is not in Ontario. I want to find out whether there is more than one distance option in the basic monofocal lens covered by OHIP. I don't care about distance vision without glasses. A mid-range focus might work well for me.

@mikeske97776 ай бұрын
I took the monofocal lens in both eyes. since I frequently drive at night and wanted absolutely the clearest vision possible. I also did not mind to wear glasses for near vision it was not a problem for me. Just getting something that was lighter than the thick heavy glasses for the extreme far sightedness I had was what I aimed for. The IOLs I got exceeded by a large margin exceeded my own expectations as I had better then 20/20 vision int he right eye and 20/25 in the left eye. I still wear glasses but don't need them at all for driving and even for my computer that I have the habit of sitting about 4 feet away. I expected that was going to need some glasses and expected at least +1.50 for both eyes for distance and what I got was no correction int he right eye and a +0.25 in the left for distance. Sure I do need a correction for reading and it is +2.25. Oh yeah I am a 66 year old male. The biggest thing is ask the question and be sure you get the answers completely by the doctor and listen to their advice. I am so glad I did. This was not the first time I had gone through this as my wife 7 years ago had her cataract surgery and I did a lot reading and searching the internet for her as she was already displaying signs of dementia when she got her cataract surgery. I made sure that she got what she wanted and it ended up that after testing and measuring she was not a candidate for the other lens available and so she and the doctor decided it was best she have the monofocal lens for her and she was mostly satisfied with the outcome.

@GoodOptometryMorning10 ай бұрын
Vision for sports is always tricky. If you want to play pool without glasses you want to think about if you want to see clearly at the cue ball or at the ball you are aiming at (I realize this distance could vary from 1-6feet). If you are choosing monofocal lenses for distance the surgeon might be thinking 20ft ie for driving....if you get it clear for 2 ft or 6 ft then you will need to have glases for driving. I would recommend a discussion with your surgeon so you are both on the same page.

I had been thinking of getting near or intermediate for monofocal since I do a lot of work at those distances but am currently leaning toward distance because I figure I can get glasses similar to my current progressives that will take care of intermediate and near. I don't mind wearing glasses and if most people pick distance, don't complain and went through the same thought process, I give that weight. Also, I looked at the Alcon website comparative chart for their IOLs and it describes their monofocal lens as giving distance vision. So I'm also thinking of the manufacturer's assumption of how the lens is going to be used. I'll probably also talk to people who are nearsighted (I know at least one who recently chose the standard lenses) and see how they are getting on.

I had laser surgery about 15 years ago. Does that make a difference For cataract surgery? Monovision
@missmonasuzette8 ай бұрын
I had my right eye (dominant) done first about 5 weeks ago, with Johnson and Johnson Eyehance which was supposed to be set for distance, laser assisted to correct moderate astigmatism. (1.50) As it turns out, the lens is set for near, even though he said afterwards that it was in the right position for distance. I don't know what happened, but it appears that there has been some kind of error. I have sharp focus for about 5 feet and then it drops off, but I can tolerate it inside of my house. My close vision tested at 20/10 and I can read the smallest paragraph on the paper they have you hold at the doctor's office when they test you. Phone, computer, cooking, etc are all wonderful. I do love that close vision clarity, but I expected to wear reading glasses for close up, and now I will definitely need glasses for outside and driving. I have a contact in my left eye now to see if I can tolerate mono-vision before the next surgery, and I do not like it at all. To me, so far, it's a sacrifice in visual quality just to not wear any glasses. Therefore, my only option is to have the second eye set to near and hopefully it will match the right eye. I have to admit I'm a bit nervous about that considering the circumstances thus far. That said, it may be a blessing in disguise for me in the long run that the lenses are set to near, because I will only need glasses for watching tv inside my house, and am ok with wearing glasses outside and to drive. I can get away with going on walks without them but it's just not as enjoyable. Driving is another story.

From what I've read "arms length" or intermediate is exactly that, beyond 3 feet will be blurry without glasses. My opthalmologist has a sheet that I sign before surgery stating that I understand I will need glasses for distance and near. I know I'm going to need glasses for watching TV (which is 10 feet away in my house).
