I had both eyes done 2 years ago . No pain . Hardly any sensation at all except cool water running over my eye. I was terrified of having it done the first time but fine for the second one . If anyone is waiting to have it done , don't worry . It really is fine and the results amazing . I now have perfect vision at age 82 .

@@Soapandwater6 I've had bot lasik and cataract surgeries. Your eye is heavily numbed and it is irrigated. There is am eye speculum put in that keeps your eye open You'll be fine

It might be a minor surgery in the world of surgeries, but I remember one thing a surgeon told me when he did a minor procedure on me. He said no surgery is minor, and I treat every procedure I do as something major. It's something that has stuck with me. It might be minor, but it's your eyes, which is a major part of you. Treat everything as major.

At age 65, I was legally blind. I had cataract surgery (lens implants). I came out with 20/20 vision in both eyes. Done 1 at a time, a few weeks apart. No pain, just an endless run of eyedrops starting 2 hours before surgery. Immediately after surgery we went to Ihop for breakfast.. I was able to order and read the menu// 15 years later, I still have near perfect vision.. I use reading glasses for the really small stuff. It is hard to think 80 when you're still seeing 20.

​@karenclark9967 it's still surgery. I had cataracts removed in February, both eyes two weeks apart. I also had an external smoothing procedure done to the right eye before the cataract surgery. That hurt for a while afterwards. Surgery was a piece of cake. Though the 1st week some of the meds i had to put in kind of burned for a bit. I got light adjustable lenses. The adjustments, one for the one eye, two for the other. I'm now 20-20 for both, distance and near vision. But that was time consuming.

I had cataract surgery on both eyes on March and April of 2017, simple surgery, no problems after, I use reading glasses but driving at night is so much better, It is well worth the effort, If you need this surgery please get it done

I am glad that you didn't have problems, I on the other hand the sedative that they gave me DID NOT WORK, THEY GAVE ME THE SEDATIVE 4 TIMES AND I STILL FELT VERY THING GOIN ON AND YES IT WAS VERRY PAINFULL. FINALLY THE SURGEN JUST HAD TO PROCEED WITH ME BOUNCING ALL OVER THE TABLE, WHAT YOU SAY DOESNT PERTAIN TO EVERY ONE!!!!!!!

GEEZE, that sounds rather dangerous to perform a surgery with that much sedative and/or relaxing medication. As far as I know the doctor is (legally) limited on how much medication he can give a patient. I don't understand why he didn't stop the surgery (seems there's a really high risk in his procedure) and offer another method & appointment date..... Personally at that point, if given the option, I might have considered a different surgeon or specialist. Your experience sounds horrific! Sounds like a really good reason to have the doc checked out by the medical authorities. Where I live it's the College of Physicians & Surgeons just to see if his skill (and attempt) is acceptable & 'normal'. So sorry you went through this.

I had mine done when I was in my forties of all things. The surgery itself, my eye was completely numb and dilated. He had me using some antibiotic eye drops for a few days prior to the surgery. They had my eye completely dilated and anesthetized. They gave me the sedative and said it would relax me, but I would remain awake, which was true. I was aware that he put something in to keep my eye lid open. Then he positioned a small white light over my eye and kept saying look at the light. He had some music playing from a radio nearby. I could feel him pressing around and kind of messing with my eye. I was wondering when he was going to start the actual lens replacement. All of a sudden he said, you're done. As he slapped a patch that I could somewhat see through over my eye and they wheeled me into post-op. They had me sit in a recliner for 20-30 minutes and sent me home. I could see through the holes in the patch and could tell everything was bright and vivid. I did experience some discomfort over night in that eye. Like I got a lot of sand in it. Some time the next morning the discomfort subsided. The afternoon of the day after, I went to the surgeon's office. He took the patch off and examined everything. He thought the discomfort might have been due to a viral infection, but whatever it was went away quickly. The change in my vision was amazing! I had to get used to used to using that eye again. Now it's nearly perfect, and the other eye was the bad eye. They both had cataracts, he said the one in the left eye was offset just a bit, so I basically looked around it. In the right eye the cataract was pretty much dead center. They did it a few weeks later, no discomfort or complications at all. Piece of cake, went like clockwork. Here I am today, my distance vision is nearly 20-15. Meaning better than normal. I do need help with near vision and mid-range (computer). Which I bought a pair of cheap reading glasses 1.25 X and with that the characters on the screen were razor sharp. I made my living basically doing software engineering, so seeing a computer screen was absolutely necessary.

From someone who had 1 done 3 weeks ago..I was very nervous. Bottom line, I was aware, but didn't care. Don't recall lid retractors, felt NOTHING but a cool flush across my eye, saw colors, & Dr said done. In recovery, they sat the head of the bed up, gave me water I asked for, put me in a wheelchair, & out I went. I would have done the other one the next day! Please try to be calm. That's tough cuz the words scalpel & eye don't mesh. But from a nervous Nellie, nothing to it. No headache, no floaters...nothing. Only pain in the Patoot...doing endless eye drops. Worth it for the clear vision! Get my exam for glasses tomorrow & other eye not needed for possibly a year. Oh...at 1 of your check ups, ask to see a lens...they are so tiny!

I am 74 and never need glasses, not even for small print! I had new lenses put in my eyes after cataract surgery about 5/6 years ago and threw away the glasses I had been wearing for almost 30 years, I just don't know why it isn't offered to everyone...... the cost was about $3,000 per eye but I was spending $5/700 or more a year for glasses, not to mention the inconvenience, It was scary before I had the first eye done, they told me I would be awake for it, I would have anesthetic but would still be conscious for the operation while they operated and that scared the crap out of me, almost to the point I was thinking about not having it done, except for the fact that I was nearly blind and had no choice Well I remember laying on the table, the next thing I remember was the nurse bringing me a cuppa and a sandwich, it was allover, never felt a thing, not before, during.....or after, after 30 years and many $1,000's of dollars wearing glasses, gave them away, I have 20/20 vision and can even read the small print like I was a 20 year old, while there is always risk with every operation, the risk seems minimal and the rewards are fantastic, the other thing is they only do one eye at a time and you don't really need 2 eyes to survive, so even if something does go wrong, if you have cataracts you would have been blind pretty soon anyway........with the operation you have a great chance of getting your sight back like when you were young, don't have the operation and keep the cataracts.....you will go blind for absolute certain!.........and remember, there is a risk in getting out of bed every morning.....but think about the rewards, So take it from someone who has had it done, I highly recommend the operation

@@4clovers4u actually no, I did not get the advanced lenses, advanced lenses must give you Xray vision🤣🤣When I say I can read small print, I do need excellent lighting but I can read it I am in Australia and at the time I could get new lenses in one eye for $3,000 (they will only do one eye at a time) in a Private Hospital, I could get them for free in a Public hospital but there was a waiting list(about 3 months) as I was clinically blind in one eye and could not see very well in the other, I took the $3,000 offer the advanced lenses from memory were something like $5,000 per eye n a Private Hospital, I waited for the second Eye and it was free(with the same ophthalmologist(eye Surgeon) My Brother has just had the same surgery with the same great results hope that helps P.S. Not sure if I mentioned it but I was very near blind and didn't know it, I know I was struggling to read anything and new glasses were not helping like the from in the frying pan, I suppose as it happened over time, turns out I had cataracts, they put the new Lense in when the removed the cataracts

I had surgery 6 weeks ago, I was nervous but sure it wouldn't hurt and I wouldn't see anything but lights. I'm in England, as it began I was informed new Doctor would be doing it under consultants direction. Procedure was uncomfortable, not pain free, I felt I could see an instrument. It took nearly an hour. Halfway through I yelled out as got severe pain, like being stabbed through eye. They apologized, put more anisthetic in and consultant took over. After 3 days I was impressed at my sight improving... By day 5 things went wrong. Vision became blurred, nosebleeds from left nostril, eye operated on, daily for a week. Now taking 3rd prescribed eye drops mix, after two more visits to hospital. Appointment for beginners April. Hopefully lot of fluid behind the eye Will clear . I am terrified now .... Fear of losing sight as it feels like I m looking through a dirty contact lense. SORRY, don't want to scare people, as Dr. Says, majority will be fine. I've been unlucky. Just feeling very frightened

Great video. I'm recovering from cataract surgery right now, (had left eye done 2 days ago, right eye two weeks before that.) Both times, I asked more than once EXACTLY WHAT CAN I DO OR NOT DO AND FOR HOW LONG after surgery. I'm a retired physician, but I felt that their "brochure" didn't provide enough information,...and I was right! The eye drop routine is a total pain, especially if you also have glaucoma drops too, but no pain at all.

I was 70 for my first surgery in 2020. On a scale of 10 with zero being "no pain or discomfort during or after the procedure" my first was a 1 and I'd rate the vision correction as a 9.9, and I could see well within 12 hours. Had to wait 7 months for the next due to Covid, and having different vision in both eyes during that period became quite annoying with opening just one eye to see close and the other to see distant. The second was a 3 in discomfort for a minute or two (extremely bright light during and strong stinging afterward until a nurse put in numbing drops but I didn't need more) and correction was about 9.8. The correction matches so closely that I can very clearly see far distance for the first time in more than 50 years! The "reading glasses" sold in various stores work well for close vision and they're cheaper than prescriptions. Glad I had it done and I encourage others to do it.

Family member had cataract surgery yesterday (not from you or your clinic) and was in terrible pain. She kept telling the doctor she was in pain but the doctor kept insisting it was just a bit of pressure, but she kept telling the doctor the pain was separate from the pressure. She did her best to hold still but sobbed in pain through the whole thing. About halfway through the doctor told the nurse to up the dose of whatever was in the IV but it didn't help at all. So please - do not say there is no pain, because for some people, for whatever the reason - there is.

Just had my left eye done. It is painless and very quick. I took an Ativan just because I’m claustrophobic. I opted for the multifocal lenses and it is absolutely worth the extra money. My vision with just one eye done is amazingly clear. I will not have to wear glasses for reading when my second eye is done.

I had cataract surgery on both eyes 3 years ago and it is absolutely painless, so happy now ,I wore glasses for many years and even had bifocals, each time I had to get new glasses they were getting thicker each time and now I don’t have to wear glasses , and I can even drive at night, watch tv, read , I see better now than I’ve ever seen in my entire life , best thing I ever done was to have the surgeries, my vision was better the next day after each surgery, my eyes were done one at a time first one then two weeks later she did my other eye , I had an amazing eye doctor , she and I talked the entire time she was doing my surgeries , I was a bail bonds women and she ask all about that and that was one of the conversations we had while she was doing the surgery,

No iv no drugs. Just drops to numb the eye. The nerve wrack was the machine sound .. Took 6 mins ea eye. In n out. Back to drs office two hrs later took patch off of eye m I was in awe. I saw colors n could see for ever . reading glasses only. Love it n dont b afraid.. Its awesome

Had one eye done 2 years ago. Not fun at all!bright lights instant headache.Thank goodness this dr gave me iV so they can give me more meds. So I didn’t through up. Longer time in recover but so worth it. Didn’t have to were a shield after either. Now I need other eye done. Had to change dr because of insurance. I have refuse surgery! Because they do not offer IV. Only a pill under your tongue! Nope I can’t do it. 🥺

You know your body. From your previous experience you know what works for you. They usually give a low dose Ativan to relax patients for invasive procedures. Works well for some. Continue your search for someone who will provide you with the 'help' you need to have a successful outcome. Good luck from Vancouver BC ❤

As surgeries go it is minor but there is always a little apprehension before your procedure. I had the surgery done and having the second eye done soon and while it may be a little uncomfortable it's worth it. No real pain was ever felt during the procedure.

Well they do give you medication to relax you - usually a small pill for under your tongue but you might not remember that. The 'water' you felt may have also been a form of mediation to prevent your eyes from attempting to twitch or move, regardless of the surgeon using the tool to keep your eye open. My husband went thru many eye procedures for a different ailment - no surgery was involved. But the would run tests beforehand with this big crazy looking machine - no anaesthetic needed - but once they needed to look more closely at his problem they would freeze him up with eye drops. I always went with him & he always expressed how debilitating it was to be in the middle of a large busy city (in a mostly 'medical' community/area and really feel out of place by his inability to see properly. Luckily the freezing only ever lasted for the test and maybe an hour afterwards. Oh and his diagnoses? EXTREMELY high blood pressure (previously undiagnosed & no symptoms) had almost disengaged most of his functioning blood vessels. A years worth of specialists visits paid off. Normal recovery for patients like him was 2 - 3 years and most don't have much improvement in their sight. He was extremely lucky we acted that fast when he told me that his eye felt 'itchy & weird like there was sand in his eye, when I got home from work that day. He wanted to delay a trip to emergency Dept, I said we needed to go cuz you don't 'play' with your eyesight. In his case quick action helped save his health & eyesight. Oh and put him on two different types of blood pressure meds. Apologies for going a bit off topic.

I just had cataract surgery this past October and November. The October day went fast and was not painful and went fast but the November date was totally another thing. I felt every step of the action and lasted six hours. The eye was held still but I felt every cut and tool use during the rest of the time. It was not fun. It took almost 4 weeks for my eye to heal. It felt like I had sand in my eye. It was very painful as the pain killers wore off, The Doctor had to put on a contact lens to isolate the eyelid from contacting the eye. The pressure of the patch and the contact helped me get through the first few days after. If I had had the second surgery first I am not sure I would have done the second surgery. Thank God I did cause it is great the difference it all made. I now can see distance, 20/25 without glasses, and do close-up reading with a standard pair of Walmart readers, I will be 83 tomorrow.

Had first surgery Tuesday, 8/27, and today 8/29 everything is great. Surgery was completely painless. I was told I'd feel a short sting when the eye was numbed, but I felt no sting. I saw my doctor pacing around the room, so I asked nurse when was he gonna do my eye. She laughed and said he was finished. They were just waiting for some time to pass b4 sitting me up. It felt like cool water running over my eye and sound of shattering glass. I thought he was prepping me. That WAS the procedure. Wow. I've worn glasses for 65 years. It will be hard to adjust if I don't need them. My vision was more clear immediately even though they said it would be blurry.

I’ve done thousands of cataract anesthetics and I’d prefer to match the anesthetic to the patient, but sometimes you don’t know a patient needed a different type of anesthetic til they’re on the table and you may be half way done with a 5-11 min procedure. Setting realistic expectations with the patient and understanding their level of stimulation/pain tolerance is key. If you’re too sleepy and move unpredictable during surgery you can loose all vision. So more awake and a bit uncomfortable for 1-6 mins is usually in your best interest. We also see patients who come in say I absolutely don’t won’t any sedation who do the case with numbing drops only saying they felt nothing?? Individual reactions vary widely, but no one comes in and has a knee replacement with no anesthesia. As a provider that tells you from a risks perspective to keep the patient aware enough for them to be predictable for their own safety. You may be a bit unhappy with how you didn’t get as sleepy as you expected, but you will not be blind. Most patients don’t have clear recall of the procedure, but are awake enough to go home safely and be positive about the overall experience. Cataract patients have a wide range of functional capabilities as well as some support to no support when they are discharged. Those things also affect how much anesthesia you should have.

So happy for the positive experiences listed. I did not have this. I had a very traumatic experience. Felt I was suffocating under the drape during the surgery. Will absolutely not be sedated again as I could not speak. It was a horror show. It seemed to go on and on and on. After, the vision cleared slowly over a week and is not as sharp as before. The graininess and razor blade type pain was unrelenting for almost 2 weeks. When stopped using the last drop that has started to improve. I have canceled the second surgery and maybnow never have it.

Thanks for this video, which included some information I didn't already know. I had cataract surgery 14 years ago on an eye that had minimal vision (now blind) because of unsuccessful retinal detachment surgery. I assume I had anesthetic drops, but nothing else, as I drove to the clinic, was aware of everything during the surgery, and then drove back to work. The surgeon said they normally tell their patients not to drive, but recognized that I was an exception because I already had a few months' experience driving with monocular vision (I routinely wore a 'pirate patch' over this eye because the minimal, very distorted vision I had was just enough to be annoying--but now that it's blind I don't need the patch anymore). After the surgery, I mentioned that it appeared as if the surgeon had been 'shoveling snow' and he said that was about what it was like because of the opacity of the lens. I only needed the surgery because the lens was so opaque the interior of my eye couldn't be examined--and in fact, in the mirror it had a goldish-tan appearance. Now it's about time for my 'good' eye to receive cataract surgery--and obviously I can't afford to have anything go wrong with it!

I just had my left eye done a week ago felt nothing it was ver in ten minutes. Use your eye drops. The difference form the left eye ‘surgery one’ and the right eye ‘ not done yet’ is amazing. The right eye everything is blurry and yellow the left eye is clear and white😊 PS I do not need glasses❤

Just had my second cataract removed 10 days ago. It was a little bit uncomforable, no denying it. Worst bit was the surgeon was training a junior doctor and was describing everything he was doing. " I'm making an incision here and here, im pumping in fluid. I'm using the ultrasound on high power, pumping in more fluid. Im inserting the new lens, rotating it. " and so on. I'm laying there wincing, thinking " FFS shut up." After it though, the doc was my new best hero.

It did not hurt at all. !!! But for the last 10 minutes feels really weird, like when you knock your funny bone, ie elbow !!!! I found the best thing is you have a cover over you and you have a cool breeze on your face !!!!! So you can breathe and it's really pleasant !!!! I have long vision so I asked for long distant vision in the new lens !!!!! Now I'm 68 yrs old and I can read the bottom line with both eyes on the chart !!!! For all of the operation all you can see is Fog !!!! I had the operation on my left eye, about 7 years ago. !!!! Everything went perfect !!!! I used a pair of Safety Glasses all the time when I came home !!!! Because you can go to sleep with them on !!!! It's vital to use your Eye Drops and keep your eye protected all the time until the Hospital tell you it's safe to not use them !!! I think it's a few weeks or so !!!! The people I know that had problems would not use their eye drops or else they would not protect their eye, or they went to work the next day !!!! So it's very important to do exactly what the Hospital tell you, and everything should be O K !!!! It's amazing to see the crystal clear image after having blurred foggy vision !!!!

I had both eyes done two days ago. Mine was somewhat painful. I would say 5 on scale to 10. Most of the pain was pressure - felt like someone was pressing on my eye. I would compare it to having a tooth capped. I got Panoptix and on 2nd day of recovery i am 20/40 far, but about 20/30. Functional like this, but waiting for swelling to go down to see if i can get to 20/20.

I’ve had both of mine done. The first one I felt every single moment, it was excruciating! When I had my second I told them I realised I should have said I had facial neuralgia. This time I mentioned it and they gave me an injection into the eye - I never felt anything, not even the injection.

I had one removed over twenty years ago, the other one fifteen years ago I was 43 years old. I almost waited too long to get the second one done. I had to see an ophthalmologist who specialized in complicated cataract removal. I was totally blind in that eye. My doctor asked me why I waited so long to get it done. he told me it was almost inoperable. Anyone considering this operation, get it done. You can permanently damage your eye and lose your vision. Trust me, the minimal discomfort is not worth losing your vision. The reason I took so long to get the other one done is because I have a disease that has caused me to get numerous joint replacements. I just didn't want to stomach another operation at that time, and I did not know that cataracts can progress to the point of being inoperable

I had one cataract operation about two years ago. I asked for no sedation or anesthesia which was how he normally used. The surgery was no problem and had good results. The only thing that did bother me some but not any real pain was the needles he injected behind my eyeball in two places. Can’t the surgery be done with numbing drops without the needles? There was a anesthesiologist in the room but I never needed him. I think the Dr and the nurses were amazed that I took the needles fully awake??

I saw shadows coming at me, bright light, etc. Felt some pain but nothing I couldn't handle. The fentanyl they gave me had a bad affect on me! No fentanyl when the next eye is done! It set my nervoussystem crazy! Jitters inside big time! Aweful feeling!

Yes ''grittiness '' is what I experience. I have had both eyes done this past 6 weeks, I do use drops to help relieve that feeling, I'm hoping it will eventually feel normal again,and none of the dryness or grittiness . Thank you for this informative video!

I'm fairly young like you are and need the surgery as well, but on one eye. Is there anything they think provoked your cataracts/vision change? Was it onset quickly? I was fine a month ago and then after an event with bright sunlight exposure, weeks later hazy, cloudy, blurry. Your post is a month old, did you have the surgery? Things go well?

I've had cataract surgery twice and both times elected to go fully under. After the first surgery, the eyelid was painful to the touch, but no problems with the second which was a few years later. I should say that I don't live in the US and there were no out of pocket expenses. I left hospital with enough drops to see me through until the follow up visit.

Polarising glasses were supplied in the post-op pack. Everything was blue-white with the implanted lens- the other eye was quite yellow-white - like seeing a room lit with cool or daylight LED lights compared to warm LEDs, very noticeable. In Australia, IV sedation is normal - you have to initiate the discussion not have it - strange when both the surgeon and anaesthetist then agree they would opt NOT to have sedation! It isn't needed - unless you're the type to throw a wobbly in the middle of it. I find vision is improving over several days, it certainly wasn't jaw-dropping the next day. I watch every KZbin video I can before any medical procedure - the devil you know principle. The injection beforehand stings a bit. This is equal first to peeling off the drape stuck around the eye after the procedure is done for discomfort. On reflection, sedation might be a good idea for the mind-numbing form filling before you get into the op theatre. As expected, eyes are 'scratchy' for a week or so afterwards but this settles as time passes

im 87 yrs old had cataract sergery about 2 yrs ago never any pain but did have wear dark glasses 3-4 days was about 3 weeks apart from ist eye best thing i ever did with my eyes i used reading glasses for years let me tell the good part after i had both eyes fixed i thought i had a new tv the colors were so bright before they were pale faded i thought that was ok my tv is about 18 ft away on a wall i talked to the tech about it it being fuzzy on small # she got me Rx for glasses cleared it up i still drive at me age my long range vision is great i recoment this surgery to any one its great

Yes they do make lenses that can focus far, near and medium cuz I just got them today!!!! I am so grateful. I have work glasses since age 2 (I am 55 now) and decided to get a lens replacement so eliminate glasses. (I am not a candidate for lasik). Anyway, long story short, they definitely do make lenses for both far and near vision. Great news for people!

Have had one eye done. Second eye in 3 days. Anyhow surgery painless. Recovery painless. Eye patch after annoying. Best part only thing I remember during surgery is seeing a big pink and blue poodle. And I remember saying are we doing surgery in a warehouse - there's no ceiling!

I had cataract surgeries lately. My first surgery was absolutely painless. My second was painful. First of all, I felt very sharp pain with the first 2 incisions into the cornea. After the doctor administered more anaesthetic drops, it was okay. Also, I had a lot of pain after each surgery, but for different reasons. The first surgery the pain was due to eyestrain. The second surgery, my eyelids were super painful for about 3 days. The experience of pain is not the same for every patient.

Had second eye done 2 weeks later. I woke up & was in a lot of pain... heard doctor tell anesthesia guy "she needs more".

I just had my right eye done about a month ago. They gave me fentanyl intravenously as a seditive to just keep you relaxed. It had the opposite effect on my nervous system! I like I was jittery inside and it did not make me feel calm. Actually I thought the procedure was fascinating but had to fight the affects of the fentanyl. It took until about 30 mins or so after the surgery for those side affects to leave. The bad thing is fentanyl stays in your system fir as long as 72 hrs after its administered. I told my eye surgeon no fentanyl next go round! And I did feel some aching pain a couple times like when you accidentally bop yourself in your eye, and twice felt quick sharp pain. Nothing I couldn't handle.

Great video. I am going for my second eye cataract removal next Tuesday and am absolutely dreading it! The other eye was done some 3 years ago and it was extremely painful, I felt as if my eye was being scratched out and it is taking a lot for me to return for a second op... It was also very painful for apprx 4 days, I know this shouldn't be but i can assure you it was :-( To add insult to injury (excuse the pun), some two years later I had to pay for laser treatment on the same eye and to this day I feel as if I have a film over it. I can sympathise. My first cataract surgery was awful. It took ages and the anaesthetic drops wore off and I think they injected my eye but it was all agony. Everyone told me it was painless and laughed when I said it was painful. My friend that took me said people were coming out that went in after me and she wondered why it took so long. Plus, instead of the distance lens they were supposed to put in I ended up with what I call my "bionic eye" because I could read the smallest print on labels, etc. I'd previously worn distance specs and reading specs. They weren't any good and the optician said there was such a difference between the two eyes that he couldn't prescribe any specs. I found out that I could use a contact lens in the unoperated eye so I had distance vision in one eye and reading vision in the other. This is known as mono-vision I believe and some people have it done deliberately to alleviate the needs for specs. Needless to say that when I needed the other eye done I was petrified but luckily I had it done in a private hospital that took NHS overspill patients and I couldn't believe the difference. When they sat me up I couldn't believe it was over as it was so quick and painless. And when I mentioned that I'd been doing great with the mono-vision the surgeon gave me distance vision in that eye so I haven't had to wear specs since. Unfortunately, now many years later I have a bit of blurring in my distance eye and am waiting for laser treatment to clear it. Good luck xx 👍

He didnt mention eye drops! Theres several drops that are prescribed to use over the days before surgery and days/weeks after surgery. The drops get eliminated over the weeks down to 0. The drops are very important, you should be given a schedule for using them. Some people need someone to put the drops in, having someone home with you to help with the drops or simply to keep you on schedule is a good idea.

No pain during the surgery at all. One suggestion: go home and just keep your eyes closed and relax! Give your eyes a rest. I found I went home kept my eyes shut as long as I could so that the blinking doesn’t irritate the eye and the next day when I woke up, I had no discomfort whatsoever. I was given Ativan as a relaxant, but I was so anxious. The Ativan did not take affect, which was unfortunate, but I just found the bright light was the most hardest thing in the whole surgery looking at the light. But if that’s what it took to get this great vision it’s not that bad.

There is no pain during surgery. I felt intense pain after surgery (on my way home) It felt like something was sticking into the outer corner of my right eye. I took 1/2 pain pill and it went away shortly after. Just had the left eye done (at 10:00 AM) I had a lot of pain over the entire iris , took a whole pain pill 10 min after leaving surgical center (50 miles from my home) It is now 2:43 PM and the pain is back but not as bad. I put the plastic eye shield on then put a small ice pack over that. I made sure the eye was not touched. the ice helped The pain is down to 1-2

I had my left eye done 3 years ago … I was nervous about surgery and didn’t sleep the night before the surgery, I was given the normal relaxing sedative and wheeled into the surgical room. In middle of the surgery, I woke up from the sedative to the doctor yelling at me. Apparently I had gone into a deep sleep and my eye movement made it extremely difficult for him to lift the cataract. It was not only a failed surgery … after a dozen post op visits … I realized it couldn’t be corrected. I am legally blind in that eye. I should have sued him. I learned later that this can happen, hyper nervous/anxious patients and he could have/should have put me under complete anesthesia. Folks make sure your surgeon is board certified (mine was but even that didn’t help me) and has years of experience and is competent. This is a simple routine surgery but there are risks.

But wouldn't your eye, under complete anesthesia, roll up? When I close my eyes for sleep, my eyes roll up. ? Seems like you would have to stare straight ahead and be very still, and if you were sedated, you probably couldn't cooperate well. Maybe they gave you too much sedation. ? That would not be your fault.

Later on I asked him … why were u yelling at me … he said something about my rapid eye movement making lifting the cataract extraordinarily difficult comparing it to an erupting volcano. The surgery was a failure, I lost trust in him. And decided to just live with it. I am almost blind in that eye …my other eye is fine for now but does have a developing cataract. My childhood next door neighbor is an eye surgeon when I told him what happened he said my doctor, knowing I was extremely anxious about the surgery should have put me completely under anesthesia and not the light sedative they use for most cataract surgery. He also said my doctor should have halted the surgery when he realized my rapid eye movement was too dangerous to work on. Some advice … always be sure your surgeons for anything are board certified annually. There is a published book that lists all of them. Even then, board certified doctors will skew up on you. Mine was board certified and I’m a one eye blind because of him Yes, it was his fault. In future, I will fly to the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Clinic - Mass General Eye and Ear … they are world famous and seldom make mistakes. It would be worth the airfare knowing how important eyesight is. Hope this helps 🥰

I was pretty much out of it when I had mine done (both eyes, about six weeks apart). Sedated both times. I sent my driver to get breakfast at a restaurant about ten minutes away and the doctor called him to come get me before he was seated. I was able to see stars distinctly the night after I had the surgery in the morning. No pain, no problems. I do have to wear polarized shades now, but no problems driving. My job is strenuous and involves lifting up to a hundred pounds sometimes, so my doctor grounded me until the second had healed completely. I had the secondaries in both eyes. I don't know what they do now, but the laser for that was excruciating, each pulse like getting kicked in the ---uh--- you know. Now, what really hurt was the recovery from scleral buckle surgery when my right retina detached about ten years later. Like being beat in the eye-socket with a baseball bat from the inside out and the idiots didn't send any pain meds home with me from that.

I literally had my 2nd eye cataract surgery today. The drops numb your eye and it becomes quite blurry and numb.The anaesthetic block was done with me lying down. I was asked to look up or sideways and given that the eye was already a bit numb and blurry i couldnt see any instruments coming at me. There was pressure from the instrument used to create the block. It lasted 5 seconds and nothing to worry about. The actual op was done in a small operating theatre. I lay face up with my head in a small headrest.. The surgeon was behind me. He put a lightweight airy cloth over my face. It was not claustrophobic because it wasn't tight fitting and slightly transluscent. My good eye was covered and I could see the cloth and some vague shadows and lights beyond.With the operated on eye, I couldn't see anything. I could sense the surgeon working on my eye but it definitely was not sore at all. They washed the op eye with water now and again so i sensed that on my face. It took maybe 15 mins. He put a small shield on my eye with an eye pad, taped with papery tape. I felt a little woozy for about 20 mins but it was nothing. My first eye has now healed up brilliantly and as well as distance, my reading vision has really improved too. I am so looking forward to seeing how this second eye has improved. I would recommend this surgery and it definitely wasn't sore or even nerve wrecking at all.

I had my right eye done yesterday. On a scale of 1-10, the pain level was a 10. It was brutal. The cataract was dense, and the surgeon had a difficult time removing it. Also, I underwent a vitrectomy in the same eye 9 months earlier.

I had both done, my right with sedation, my left without. I fibbed and drove myself home both times, the sedation isn't much. There was NO pain, it just felt like he was moving instruments around in my eye but there was NO discomfort at all. I could see quite well as soon as he put the new lenses in! And I could see him fractionating my old lens with the ultrasonic tool. I could see the vacuum probe sucking the fragments out. And I could see him placing the new lens, unfolding it and placing the haptic springs. I still have crystal clear vision now, 3 and 5 years later, respectively. I had him give me slight nearsightedness for books and my computer. I have glasses to drive. I love the new Bosch & Lomb silicone Aspheric SoftPort lenses. My right eye focuses at 18" and my left at 24".

Not true for me. Was wide awake and had a knot in my stomach even though they swear they gave me something.. Felt a sharp pain near the beginning and said “yow” doctor said oh you felt that? I said heck yes. After that was even more anxious waiting for it to happen again. It didn’t, but I didn’t know that. After was ok but felt scratchy and sore. You can’t see anything was the only true thing anyone told me. Dread having the second eye.
