Catch and Cook Mangrove Snapper

Catch and Cook mangrove snapper on a kayak. These beautiful fish make incredible table-fair. We give spot tips and tricks on how to catch this good tasting fish, with white flaky meat. We caught these fish in arroyo city which is 45 minutes from south padre island and port isabel. This estuary holds some incredible fish and makes for some really good fishing.

I don’t ever keep snook to be honest. There just aren’t as many down here as I would like there to be so I just let them go and keep flounder, trout or mangroves.

In the ship channel yes, but not everywhere. It’s just me though, I don’t like keeping reds either, catching them is too much fun. I only keep them for tournaments. I’m weird I know.

I'm hungry already. My 6 year old just asked me when I was taking him mangrove snapper fishing. Took my boys last year and they are hooked. Caught about 30 in the Brownsville Channel for a fish fry. Great video!

That is awesome! Mangroves are great for kids because you can catch a bunch of them, and after you get to eat some great tasting fish. Great way to get a kid hooked on fishing!

I’d jig a DOA shrimp on a jighead with the current bouncing close to the bottom for snook. If you want trout don’t use a jighead and work it higher in the water column. For reds I’d try live mullet on the bottom or working a gulp.

Thanks man and yeah the old bridge is the old causeway that used to be used to get to the island. It extends from port Isabel.
