I wanted to try two types of fish that are stocked in this lake. One planted by DFG and another planted my Mt. Lassen Hatchery. Supposedly the Mt. Lassen trout are as close to a wild fish as you can get and one of, if not the, highest quality of farmed fish. I was not disappointed.

No , I am not saying you shouldn't sport fish but if you do then you need to know how to take the hook out without causing any permanent damage to the fish and some fish you need to handle carefully because of their scales etc.

That orange color only comes from Krill and shrimp in the ocean. Lassen and a lot of other hatcheries put dye in the pellets to turn the flesh salmon colored. It's harmless, but makes the flesh attractive to consumers and fisherman. Also the blood line that you refer, to is actually the kidney. Been fishing for 43 years and have always called it the blood line too, finally learned that at school.. Fisheries biology at Humboldt State. A program up here you would love, studying FISH.. I did the marine and freshwater. I figured it was the closest to studying fishing. :) I know ken and his sons at outdoor pro too! Great shop. Tell him his old Accurate rep. Jason said hello! Like your videos man, the poke poling one got me to watch them! Can't believe you ate that eel. :)

I grew up on a Pennsylvania farm with a built-in trout stream running through it, 4 feet wide. During rain storms, we'd catch orange and red meat natives. Otherwise, we caught nice 1 and 2 pound stocked rainbows. They spooked easily in the small waters, and they fought HARD. And they tasted delicious any way you cooked them. We did them in the frying pan, and sometimes over an open fire. I've even had trout 🍣 sushi. Awesome. Leave the skin and head on when cooking... Eat the skin and all the head meat. Waste nothing. Eat the liver too.

I miss fishing the bay area lakes. I used to fish Del Valle, San Pablo, Shadow cliffs, Sandy wool, Vasona, Loc Lomond, Coyote and even Calaveras Lake (when I was a teen and dumb). Trout fishing was always excellent at all these lakes from shore, did not even need a boat. DFG planted all these lakes (except Calaveres) and were delicious. Every now and then I would catch some holdovers that would have pink meat but not very often. Fun and easy fishing all you needed was 4-6 lb line, light pole and reel, power bait and sliding sinker rig, You could almost always count on a limit of delicious trout. I hope its still the same.

Nice fish you two. I didn’t read the tons of comments to see if anyone mentioned this, but trout will eat rocks for a couple of reasons. One is to eat the nymphs that use rocks for protection...like caddis flies. Another is that it acts like a divers BC to help the fish maintain a certain level of buoyancy. There’s other reasons too, I’m sure their fish friends trick them into eating rocks just for laughs. I know I would. Lol.

that's a great trick!!! lassen trout are generally larger than the DFG planters which top out at 12 inches. They seldom grow much larger because they get fished out quickly because they are stupid.

limirl not really, you REALLY gotta use some force to poke a hole in this thing, like as if u used a screw driver it would easily skid it away cause of the wax on this kayak. i sat in one cause im gonna buy one soon cause i drive a 350z and dont wanna put a 95lb kayak and scratching up my car etc, ill be doing a review cause theres not any video except for this video of somone fishing in this kayak

what is shocking me over and over again when I watch these fishing videos from america is the way your country regulates the laws about animal welfare and how you guys treat these fish. In Europe you have to kill the fish instantly, one hit on the head and bleeding him out. You guys let them swim around a whole day with these clamps trough the gills. Im also a fisherman and it hurts my heart to see that such things are still going on in a Western country like yours. As a Biologist i can confirm that fish feel stress and pain, just because they don't scream doesn't mean that we should treat them like this. Disappointed about how you Americans handle fish, hope your government will regulate this soon. Greetings from Switzerland.

Jfc...do you need a tissue. This isn't Europe thank god. Our government has better things to do than worry about the handling of a couple stocked trout.

Haha! You're a pathetic biologist! Fish can't feel pain because they don't have the neurons to do so. Basically, fish don't feel pain. Yet don't get me started about how simple their brains are. Fish act on instinct mate. Stop antromorphizing animals. Animals aren't humans. I'm glad you live in Europe. We don't need your fucking pseudoscience around here.

I am an American and I agree that it seems a bit weird to keep them alive on a stringer. I always kill my catch immediately with a quick hit to the head if I plan on keeping it. Please ignore these other dickheads replying to your comment. Some people don't know how to have friendly discourse and instead result to personal attacks when their point of view is challanged. Have a good one brotha!

A krill or shrimp based diet will give trout that nice pink to orange flesh. Rainbow trout that go to sea are commonly called steelhead salmon. Great catch and cook.
