I'm not a big fan of fishing, but as far as catch and release being humane I think it really depends on the situation and the species. Battling a large fish to exhaustion for hours just to get a picture of it is cruel, and the fish have a really hard time recovering and often die from lactic acid build up in their muscles, or trauma from being pulled out of deep water. Some fish also have more sensitive mouths than others. It's unlikely that bony mouthed fishes such as Perciformes are in pain when hooked in the lip with a barbless hooks. I'm not saying these fish don't feel pain, they certainly can in other parts of their bodies. All I'm saying is that catching a six inch bluegill in a creek and quickly releasing it is very different from fighting a large oceanic species to exhaustion. I have caught small sunfish, that immediately after releasing them they quickly join a school of other individuals as if nothing happened. It's a lot nicer then snagging them with a cast net. It's also best to use lures rather than bait. I don't eat meat or fish, but I still don't think ALL fishing is evil. You could also just invest in a waterproof camera (I do both). Don't fall for the PETA propaganda and have a great time on the water. :)

I hear you. Exactly right. Have witnessed someone catching a fish that was swimming peacefully, then this guy came, caught him, got a picture taken so he can show to his friends that he caught a fish, then he had a hard time pulling the hook off which hurt the fish, and then he threw it back to the water. Why some human beings have to be so self absorbed and arrogant? Hurting an animal just for the pleasure of showing off. They are being thrown back to the water where they might die, makes no sense.

Title: The Benefits of Catch and Release Fishing Introduction: Catch and release fishing, a practice where anglers return fish they catch back into the water, has gained popularity in recent years. This technique promotes the conservation of fish populations and habitats while offering several benefits to both anglers and the environment. In this essay, we will explore the advantages of catch and release fishing and discuss why it is a superior approach for sustainable recreational fishing. Conservation of Fish Populations: One of the primary reasons catch and release fishing is preferable is its positive impact on fish populations. By releasing fish after catching them, anglers contribute to the preservation of various species. Overfishing is a significant threat to aquatic ecosystems, and catch and release helps ensure that fish have the opportunity to reproduce and maintain healthy population levels. This practice assists in maintaining biodiversity and promotes the long-term sustainability of fish species. It also helps prevent the decline or extinction of certain species that play vital ecological roles in their habitats. Preservation of Fish Habitats: Catch and release fishing also helps protect the fragile habitats in which fish live. By reducing the number of fish removed from these environments, anglers minimize disturbance and prevent damage to sensitive ecosystems. This approach is particularly crucial in areas where habitat degradation, pollution, and other human activities have already put stress on aquatic environments. The preservation of these habitats is essential not only for fish but also for countless other species that depend on healthy aquatic ecosystems. By practicing catch and release, anglers contribute to the overall health and balance of these habitats. Ethical Considerations: Catch and release fishing aligns with ethical principles by promoting the responsible treatment of fish. While fishing is a popular recreational activity, it is essential to acknowledge that fish are living beings capable of feeling pain and stress. By releasing them after capture, anglers demonstrate respect for these creatures and contribute to their welfare. Catch and release fishing allows individuals to enjoy the thrill of the sport without causing unnecessary harm or suffering. It promotes a compassionate approach to fishing that recognizes the inherent value of fish and their right to exist without unnecessary harm. Scientific Research and Data Collection: Another benefit of catch and release fishing is its value in scientific research and data collection efforts. When anglers release fish, they provide scientists with valuable opportunities to study fish behavior, migration patterns, growth rates, and other ecological factors. This information aids in the development of effective fisheries management strategies and conservation initiatives. Catch and release fishing acts as a bridge between recreational activities and scientific research, facilitating a deeper understanding of aquatic ecosystems. The data collected through catch and release practices helps scientists make informed decisions regarding fishery regulations, habitat conservation, and sustainable management practices. Recreational Opportunities and Economic Benefits: Catch and release fishing offers a sustainable way for anglers to enjoy their favorite pastime while contributing to local economies. By preserving fish populations and habitats, catch and release practices ensure that future generations can experience the joy of fishing. Additionally, areas with healthy fish populations often attract anglers from far and wide, boosting tourism and supporting local businesses, such as bait shops, lodges, and restaurants. Anglers who practice catch and release also tend to be more conservation-minded, supporting initiatives and organizations dedicated to preserving aquatic environments. Thus, catch and release fishing creates a positive economic impact in regions where it is practiced, while simultaneously protecting natural resources. Conclusion: Catch and release fishing represents a responsible and sustainable approach to recreational angling. Through its focus on conservation, habitat preservation, ethical treatment of fish, scientific research, and economic benefits, it offers numerous advantages over traditional fishing practices. By adopting catch and release methods, anglers can enjoy the sport while actively contributing to the long-term health and preservation of fish populations and their habitats. It is through these collective efforts that we can ensure the enjoyment of fishing for generations to come. By valuing the importance of conservation and responsible angling practices, catch and release fishing sets a positive example for sustainable resource management and environmental stewardship.

Catch-and-release fishing is cruelty disguised as “sport.” Studies show that fish who are caught and then returned to the water suffer such severe physiological stress that they often die of shock. Fish often swallow hooks, and anglers may try to retrieve a hook by shoving their fingers or pliers down the fish’s throat, ripping out not just the hook but some of the fish’s throat and guts as well. When fish are handled, the protective coating on their bodies is disturbed. These and other injuries make fish easy targets for predators once they are returned to the water.

It's a sport, be lucky most anglers appreciate proper catch + release. Most anglers have more respect and knowledge about fish and their mortality rates than common folk. For example the statement that anglers remove hooks from fishs' guts is incorrect, thats when you simply cut the line and let the hook rust away in the water, giving it a good chance to survive- not ripping out it's stomach. Most anglers dont even let it happen in the first place by using special hooks especially barbless ones so they dont even tear the mouth. When something like this does happen thats when the angler keeps the fish and chooses it as the one he/she will eat. Yea, hate to break it to you but most people care and arent stupid. Of course there are some idiots out there that do... there are people like that in any group of people. Pretty much the point of the video.

Tell that to a sailfish that fought for his life with a mega huge monsterous hook in its mouth for five hours. I live in So FL and see it all the time. It sickens me. I did enjoy hearing you use special hooks for the kind of fishing you do, maybe that softens it a little. But hanging a 7 foot sailfish in your man cave is no better than hanging African animals to show off how manly you are. Sorry but once again, need a fish to eat...go for it. Otherwise let them swim and be free. Thanks for the video as I know nothing about fly fishing and can't comment on that kind of fishing, but I bet my same logic prevails.
@ledraps22
@ledraps22 7 жыл бұрын
Totally different fishing. All I do is freshwater and hooking up with fish that arent massive, such as trout as explained in the video. All you do is hook them, reel them in, maybe take a quick picture, and let it go. The video demonstrates that fish live and thrive with good handling, no harm done. But that's for trout, and pretty much every other freshwater fish, for big game fish like sailfish unfortunately it's not really feasible to release them, since to get them you need to fight them for a long time. I guess you could put them back but the chances of it surviving is no where near something like a freshwater catch. People do catch them and keep them for sport. I dont see how it's a problem if they only catch a few in a lifetime while other parts of humanity kill fish in mass. The way fish are taken for the food industry is not humane. Fish that are "byproducts" of sea nets are just dumped, they just want the tasty fish while not harvesting the other fish. Thousands of fish killed not for food NOR sport. So im always skeptical of those that state "fishing for food, yea thats fine, but for sport is inhumane and cruel!" At least be against both :D !

I got so mad so quick because of the sailfish caught everyday near me and no, of course you can't release them. They are half dead by time the hours of fighting for their life are over. I just think it is sad. I also think killing a harmless deer is sad as well. I understand everything about why these creatures are killed, truly I do. It still makes me very sad. Not enough money for me to stare a deer in the face and kill it or beat the hell out of a sailfish all day for sport. Thanks for your post and somehow freshwater fishing doesn't seem all that bad. I know little about it. Thanks for the enlightenment. PS I don't eat fish or meat.
