Field Trips with Robert Field

5 жыл бұрын

In this episode we're kicking off our time near Petersburg by chasing an Alaskan icon: king (Chinook) salmon. We've never fished for this species before, so the challenge level is at an all time high. But with epic views and wildlife encounters, the fish are just a bonus.
Luckily, Alaska's bounty is plentiful, and she's serving up some JUMBO salmon. Then we get it processed and enjoy it smoked back at the lodge.
COMMENT BELOW and tell me if you've ever been to Alaska! What fish do you guys like smoked?

You have quickly become my favorite angler to watch. Your enthusiasm is all that and a bag of chips. Lol! Your series (all of them)are amazing. You take us places we can only dream of. My oldest brother wanted to be you and do what you do. Unfortunately he passed away 41 years ago at the young age of 30 from cancer. But he lived for fishing right till the end. You are touching a lot of people. Tight lines son. Keep smiling.

That was actually a different fish entirely; it’s called editing. Didn’t have footage of the fight for the one he caught in the mouth so I combined them into one sequence. Good eye but wrong assumption. ✌🏼

As a guy that has been chasing King Salmon on the Great Lakes out of canoes & kayaks for 20yrs, wow that was my perfect setup. I've literally dreamed about a place like that. And wow you guys know ZERO about salmon fishing, lol. It was almost painful watching you guys at the perfect spot, and, just...I mean, atleast swap the stock hooks out. Damn.

@@YakFishField I hear you on that. I'm used to fishing Dark Water, some of it is very clear but the bottom is usually dark. I recently got to fish a gin Clear Pond with what looked like Coral growing on the bottom. Most beautiful pond I've ever seen But the fish were so finicky. They would take a jig but only on the drop, and rarely. Wasn't mad because I landed two super-solid fish. Wouldn't touch any color worm I had and were finicky with topwater and crankbait. Did a little research and went back with a shortened white senko with pepper flakes, wacky rig this time and smashed some of the bigger fish I've ever caught. And a lot of guys said they did topwater all day in super Clearwater and I see why. It was frustrating first day to catch a few nice ones off the bat and then have it die off, but it was so gratifying to go back and nail one of the biggest bass I've bagged along with a handful of other super nice fish. The property owner heard our car doors shut at the end of the second day and came over. I won't be going back there, haha. Honestly wasn't sure but we're all human. Apologized and told him I was so grateful for that experience. It's not often that you get to see fast cruise over a sandbar in small schools, throw a bait and watch them turn and play with them, watch the approach take and hook. Not in water that clear. Caribbean clear. Was an amazing experience for a guy who grew up on a muddy river. Thanks for all of your videos and the joy you bring to us. I've started traveling and fishing more over the past year than I ever thought I would and I'm catching bigger and better fish than ever because of you and several other guys I follow. It's all about inspiration and we appreciate it. I'm on disability so I doubt it will be anytime soon, but I'm dying to take an awesome trip like one of the ones you do. I can't complain that, I got to travel a lot when I was younger and life is awesome. God bless my friend and safe travels

@@josephindahl6388 if there's one thing I've learned over the last few years it's that you better listen to the locals and the guys that are catching fish. I finally surrendered this year

2 parts brown sugar to 1 part kosher salt, drop fish fillets into mixture and then lay it out in a baking dish skin down, then layer another layer flesh down. so it's flesh to flesh. Let sit in fridge overnight, rinse, then let it dry with a fan blowing on it for about an hour or so until it starts to get a shiny look to it. Then smoke at 225 for about 2-3 hours with alder. We call it candied salmon, it's delicious!

Course salt/brown sugar brine. rinse, Cracked peppercorn on top and smoked with red alder (preferably chopped blocks, not chips), low temperature-we do ours in the winter (-20*C outside). Duration depends on fillet thickness 4-10 hours. Best served with cream cheese on crackers with a side of your favorite brown ale/honey lager...Oh and friends, luckily when you have smoked salmon everyone wants to be your friend

great video! I know salmons pull like crazy (especially on light tackles), but you should really keep your rod straight up. It's way more efficient when tiring the fish. Many times during the video, rods were almost horizontal... But congrats on your catches, and on your first salmons :)
@YakFishField

I disagree that your rod should be straight up at all times during a fight. There are a number of reasons to lower it based on what the fish is doing in my opinion. But to each their own.

Fish at that stage and that consolidated are hard to catch in the mouth. I suggest going away from treble hooks and going with a single siwash. Up here in the PNW (Seattle area), snagging is frowned upon but I know up in Alaska the residents are allowed to snag "food fish" which is what hatchery raised Salmon are. Trying to control a fish from the tail is almost impossible with the tackle you had. Would be much funner for your future clients if you figure out how to possibly use a float and jig as well as going to a single point hook on your spoons or spinners. Glad you've made it up here in the this part of the world . The rugged volcano type geography and rain make for a beautiful adventure.

Hey buddy, sick video, for all the fish spitting your hook and the sea weed getting stuck it might be better to use a single hook, trebles with salmon tend to shake much easier than a proper hookset with a single hook! have a good one guys!

You mentioned the kayak idea. There is a boat launch a couple miles up the road from you. You can launch there at higher tides and fish right in front of the hatchery. We fished this spot for years and went through all the same thrills and spills as you guys did. If you fish with roe for bait you can catch more salmon with zero snagged fish. Fly fishing is fun there too. Its just kinda lame to make a video of snagging a salmon in the tail and then saying it was an epic battle, and post it on KZbin. But we're all on the same journey, just at different places along the road. Great to see you so stoked ... not so great to watch you drag in a snagged fish.

If you stop reeling at mach 10 they might actually have a chance to bite and that was a Dusky grouse but you didn't have to go to Alaska to snag some fish you could have stayed in the lower 48 and done the same thing

heres a few tips. for one, kings dont eat when they're in the river, their metabolism shuts down when they come in and they consume their muscle for energy, thats why kings and other salmons die after spawning. on rare conditions, they will hit out of aggression, but for the most part, fishing kings in river is essentially snagging. knowing that, theres no point to use 15lb test, just use 20+, hell, use 50lbs test. kings are fun to fight, no doubt about it. i have nothing against fishing for kings in the river.
@YakFishField
