Just a Tip.. When using flies in fast water...Do Not put on a Split Shot. Cast upstream..let the fly drift naturally. The fast water will automatically suck the fly down into the strike zone.

Though I'm a fly fisherman..I have used this method hundreds of times, especially when I'm with friends that are not fly fishing. It's also an Awesome backpacking setup. An ultralight telescoping rod, flies, a bobber and a few weights.

Agreed. Coming from the other side, not a fly fisherman, but in Idaho this is a common lure setup. Telescopes all the way.

Not in my experience. Maybe downstream from the hatchery or where trout are fighting for everything that emerges. In super clear water and medium to heavy fishing pressure it’s just not gonna work. Trust..

Fly fisherman, love y'alls content even if I don't spin fish for trout. Best results for this kind of fishing is going to be fishing what we call nymphs or soft hackles. Best choice for flies are gonna be Copper Johns, Hare's Ears, Pheasant tails, and flashy fellas like the rainbow warrior. Buy tungsten beadhead versions and you can forego the split shot below the bobber entirely which makes it better to cast and fish dead drift. Most rivers in Washington allow double nymph rigs so use a very small diameter fluorocarbon tied with a fishermans knot to shank of a bigger fly, about 18 inches below put a smaller fly of a different pattern. Good luck out there
@baconwhiskey18804 жыл бұрын
Those pistol Pete's are severely underrated. I like to set up above the hole with them and put a split shot on my line and then just let it spin in the hole kinda like plunking.

I use a Pistol Pete with a slip-style water bobber. This works great for not getting caught on bottom (reeds, dirt), and for snagging those buggers that like to eat bugs near the upper water column. 1) I use a 5' mono leader for my fly line, and tie it to a barrel swivel. 2) From the barrel swivel , I throw a bead on, then water bobber (slip style) , then another bead. For this line make it about 6 - 8 inches. 3) Finish the line with loop or swivel, your preference, then connect to the main line. I just recently caught a 19" Rainbow Trout with this setup.

There are 2 major types of flies. Dry flies which float in the surface and wet flies which sink. Popular wet flies include nymph flies like the hare’s ear nymph or bead head pheasant tail nymph. Both are general imitation flies and my go to nymphs. Caught hundreds of trout on both.
@WoodenFishh4 жыл бұрын
Can I make a request that when you make videos on small creeks you ask your audience to pinch their barbs? These tiny trout get really beaten up when inexperienced anglers struggle to pop a barbed hook. It's easy enough to land a fish on barbless and it keeps fish count up on small water.
@terrykrugii5652 Жыл бұрын
Hey, aspiring trout fisherman here (I say aspiring cuz in the few times I went out, got skunked lol). I've been directed to a few small creeks in my mission to catch trout, and I had never considered the idea that the barb might actually be really bad for the fish! Considering that, in all due likelihood, I'm gonna be catching and releasing them... improving their survival odds is gonna be a more pressing concern. Thank you for this.

Years ago I went on a long hike into a lake in Olympic mountains WA state. Camped at a lake for 3 days and tried spinners, spoons, salmon eggs, etc. Couldn't get a bite but could see nice sized rainbows swimming by. Finally on the last day we got some sunshine and I got a brain storm to remove the fly from a rooster tail spinner and throw it out there with a bobber. Slammed! Caught about 5 trout in 20 minutes then the sun went down and called it a day. Flies were the ticket. This technique stayed with me and yes, fly and bobber will take trout and some other fish as well.

There’s one fly and one fly only you need to get ahold of for trout/summer Steelies under a float: the Squirmy Wormy. It absolutely destroys trout (compared to other nymphs and bugger type flies I’ll get about double the hookups.) Walmart won’t have em since their kinda a specialty but you can find them at a fly shop usually or definitely online. I’ll even tie some up and mail them to you just hit me up!

Question from a newbie. I’ve fished trout with a No8 snell & weight for years. I’m wanting to expand my bag & technique, but am having a hard time wrapping my head around using a bobber. How does a bobber help your bait setup? Especially with that great eyesight of trout, it seems they’d be distracted by a float?

As I learn to fish for trout, I've come to suspect that trout are not only visually line-shy but also tactilely so. If you watch videos of trout underwater in streams you see them tasting all kinds of stuff lightning-fast, and most of those would not even come close to translating as a hit to a heavy split-shot, then visibly moving a bobber, before it's all over and done, especially if the trout feels the mass or resistance with its mouth. So I rig with the attempt to minimize the mass and slack between me and the fish, and try to keep the proverbial tight line to feel a soft take and/or keep an eagle eye for a change in the droop of the line to go for a hook set. With a fly rod, that looks more or less like "euro-nymphing" and has worked very well for me; with a fly and bubble, that could perhaps be accomplished with a slip-bobber and a bobber stop to maintain a minimum leader length to the bobber. Jury's out on the latter, but it's looking encouraging so far.
