Catch Phrase - General 1986 Episode: Pat vs. Todd

Before its impressive run in the UK for 19 seasons, Catch Phrase, a challenging game of deciphering common phrases in the form of computer-generated animation, just lasted for one season in the US from 1985-86 with Art James as host.

This show ran from 9/16/1985-12/13/1985 in first run, with reruns airing until 1/10/86

Actually, the show lasted a total of 85 episodes with the 9/16 and 12/13/1985 tapings as episodes #21 and 85 respectively and the 12/16/1985-1/10/1986 tapings as episodes #1-20 before Perfect Match took its place. Ironically, the layout of the 12/16-12/20/1985 tapings (episodes #1-5) were slightly different than the usual. First, the randomizer speed was slowed down or reduced. Also, there were no close ups during the super Catch Phrase moments as with the music cue when it is solved, and during the bonus round, if the "M" square is solved along with 4 others in a straight or diagonal line, (s)he has a choice between 3 different prizes of somewhat equal value. If unsuccessful, (s)he received a small prize or cash amount for each catch phrase solved so if the contestant solved 4 phrase, that person receives 4 small prizes or cash amounts. In addition, (s)he is shown for 5 seconds the prizes randomized in motion before the game starts with the usual 60 seconds. From episode 6 (12/23/1985) on, it was all $200 cash prizes for each phrase solved, double if the 'M' square is solved and a single grand prize worth double the value than the other prize offered. The episode layout is similar to that of another game show, The $100,000 Name That Tune.
