Before it became an international success, the game of Catchphrase had a failed, 16-week run in America hosted by Art James, with a slightly different format. However, the first taped week (that oddly enough aired near the end of the run) manages to be even more different, particularly in terms of the bonus round. See if you can spot all the differences.

Trivia: The UK version hosted by Roy Walker aired for the first time on British television on 12th January 1986.

I was wondering why the main game stopped so abruptly, then I saw why. They definitely made the right move to get rid of the three grand prize choices and single prizes for each bonus round solve, they just served to shorten the main game. There were some phenomenal commercials here, never saw the English Leather one with Doug Flutie before. Great stuff!

I didn't know it was an American show first? It was really big in the UK in the 80s and 90s. It's still going even though it's not as good as it once was.

Absolutely. The Roy Walker years were probably the best - kept the game moving, cheery atmosphere - but I liked it around the late '90s/early '00s too, despite it getting a little cringeworthy.

Very similar to the version that aired in the UK. Same computer software with tweaks (never had the hidden prizes on each square), and a cash prize awarded for each right answer given, though the telecommunication rules back limited the amount given Unofrutnately, at least one early episode went sailing over this figure.

Catch Phrase is an American game show which ran from September 16, 1985, through January 10, 1986, in syndication. Although Catch Phrase did not succeed in its American run, the format found success in other countries. The British Catchphrase premiered two days after the American series came to an end in 1986 and aired weekly until 2004 and daily in late 2002Catchphrase is a British game show based on the short-lived American game show of the same name. Yep, TVS (who picked up the show for Britain) re-used a lot of the animations from this series, like you say tweaking them to make them relevant for UK audiences And like you say, TVS used the same computer software, evidenced by the use of that animated diamond,. Infact that diamond actually stayed in place throughout the TVS era right up till 1994

@@dazzla84_ssfc I always wondered if the "diamond" was pre-rendered, and played from tape onto the big screens? Is there any info on what computer system was used for this era of the show? I've never found any, and I've never seen anything like it. Would love to know more!
