As someone who has always been an athlete/athletic but never trained a combat sport, are they places to learn this? It seems like a highly underrated very effective art but also an extremely small community. Is it a discipline you begin training after you're more advanced in wrestling?

Catch is rare but has had a huge influence over other styles. Freestyle wrestling originates from catch but without the submissions and there are a lot of catch moves that have made their way into BJJ, especially in no-gi. You could learn Wrestling and BJJ as a base and then expand your knowledge with online material and seminars on catch if there isn't any in your area. Just read up on any rules of any competitions you do as catch has a lot more dirty fighting that might not always be legal in other sports.

Trying to formally train in Catch Wrestling is like trying to learn to learn Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in 1972.

As a BJJ guy, I think I can honestly say that the reason catch wrestling isn’t more popular is because it’s so brutal. Lots of people who do jiujitsu are a little older, with families and careers and bodies that don’t work so well anymore, and we can’t be getting twisted up quite so much.

nice stuff, greetings from a luta livre "cousin" (luta livre has catch wrestling background) from germany

Josh Barnet and Sakuraba are the only catch guys I take seriously. Everyone just doesn't look impressive in their technical knowledge/Sparring/competition.

Our catch lineage is the same as Barnet and Sakuraba. Both learned under the great Billy Robinson.

Josh has given me the nod of approval on a few of my technique videos, and I’m cool with that.
