This is the fourth in a series of videos using slow motion video to explain how woodturning catches happen. This segment covers Scrapers and how they can be tamed with a Relief Grind. Also there is some cool video of exploding bowls!
You can find instructional DVDs, Tim’s Tools and the Elbo Hollowing Tool on the Woodturning with Tim website: www.woodturning...

I appreciate you sacrificing that many bowl blanks to make these videos. It really was informative.

Tim, I have a heavy flat scraper that I will eventually regrind to a 30/70 relief grind (negative rake)% configuration. The 30° top bevel allows the tool to contact the wood at less than a 90° angle. Meanwhile, I use it successfully by angling the handle high and contacting the wood at the center line. That works well for me and it does not strip away wood like you demonstrated. Thanks for sharing! 👍🏾

I wish I think to look for these videos before I have problems. I just did this very thing. A heck if a catch right at the edge. I have never adjusted any tools before, but I’m going to try to put a relief on my scrapers. Thanks Tim.

Haha, great video. Do you have a video showing how to do the releaf grind on a flat scraper? I have one of the round ended scrappers and your video just made total sence why i get so many catches.

I guess I have never had the problem with a flat scraper inside a bowl because I am not taking aggressive cuts. It seems this demonstrates shaping with a scraper, when the scraper is meant to take off minute whispers of wood to smooth out the bowl scraper ridges. If you have to push the tool to cut, then it needs to be sharpened, not pushed harder. It's the micro upturned edge on the cutting edge of the scraper that cuts, not the sharp edge like a regular gouge. Picture how a cabinet scraper is sharpened and it's the same thing.

The reason you have the big catch with the non relief angle scraper is because your either tilting the it up and making it like a cutting edge and you should lower it down to be like well a scraper so your tool is scraping down hill

Here I was thinking that I didn't know how to properly use the scraper... and I didn't! Thanks for the tips!

I think it's time to try a relief grind on a scraper!

I'm watching because I plan to put a relief grind on mine but wouldn't it help if the flat grind scraper was held handle upwards?
@woodturningwithtimyoder
@woodturningwithtimyoder 4 ай бұрын
You can do that but you have to keep the tool rest parallel to wherever you're cutting. If you don't you will wind up having to tip the scraper on an edge to keep it cutting.

What would you use a scraper for?

Hey Tim! Would there ever be a time/place when/where you WOULD want to use a scraper WITHOUT a relief grind? If its of any use, 90% of the time I'm turning bowls. Thanks for spending the time putting out all these great videos!

I'm sure there would be situations where you would use one without a relief grind but none come to mind right now. I just find it way too aggressive without the relief grind. However hopefully someone reading this will have some insight from their experience.

If you just raise the tool rest and lift the handle a bit, wouldn't that have basically the same effect as adding a relief grind?
@woodturningwithtimyoder
@woodturningwithtimyoder 6 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. If you're directly approaching the work perpendicular to the toolrest it will be fine. However if you're following the curve of a bowl your toolrest won't be at the proper angle for the whole cut so the side of the scraper will be unsupported. That's why it's so much easier to do the release grind and just keep the tool flat.

I've never had an issue using a flat scraper on a bowl. It looks like the reason you got that nasty catch is because you had your tool angled on an upward slope. That's a recipe for disaster. Keep your scraper perfectly level, or better yet a slightly downward slope, and you should have no problem (and you won't have to grind a negative rake on a perfectly good scraper, or buy a negative rake scraper).

Jay Yaj I was just going to ask how to get a consistent relief grind, and if u have to sharpen that every time u touch up the scraper. I'm new to wood turning... But am I just aswell to keep it level, or even pointing down slightly??
@jayyaj7050
@jayyaj7050 7 жыл бұрын
I'm probably about as new as you are, tbh. I just know what works for me, and I've found that as long as you keep your straight scraper held level or tipped slightly downward, you're fine. As far as the negative rake (relief grind) scrapers are concerned, it's my understanding that you can sharpen one bevel or the other until the other bevel's too short to be useful.

I'm not certain which comment you were responding to, but I was agreeing with you on angling the scraper down a bit to make it less aggressive. BTW this also works when using carbide cutters.

Great videos but one thing I've noticed is that you f*** up a lot of bowls on purpose to make great teaching videos. Do you ever wake up in the middle of the night sobbing over all the lost bowl souls?
