In WWII soldiers often had "pointy talky" cards that described phonetics for some simple phrases and of course also had the translation that you could point to. My dad served in the Pacific and had one for Japanese. I still keep it.
@DomWeasel2 жыл бұрын
I had to explain this to my colleagues while working in Germany. German compound words with their multiple syllables are not kind to people who don't speak German and it was painful watching them attempting to try and pronounce an eight syllable word but not knowing which syllables a German would pronounce. Kind of like how Westerners say 'Toke-ee-yo' and Japanese say 'Toke-kyo'. It was amazing how they didn't think to just show the Germans the word rather than attempting to say it. But once I put the notion in their heads, they were constantly sticking their phones in the Germans faces. Even for small words they really should have at least made a little effort with. But this is the same crowd that kept pronouncing the German for milk, 'Milch' to rhyme with 'Filch'...

@@DomWeasel Thanks for adding your own interesting experience to my comment, Dom. If it's not too presumptuous of me, I would suggest this as a less ambiguous way to present the contrast between pronunciations of the city in Japan: "how Westerners say 'Toe-kee-yo' and Japanese say 'Toe-kyo'. Also: How IS "milch" supposed to be pronounced? I have no idea.

The flag of the Zemenian people is a modified version of the flag of Croatia, where the bottom strip is green instead of red, the checkers on the shield are blue instead of red, and the crown uses different color versions of the original, but with the same designs inside. Fingerprints aren't the be-all end-all. That pin was so thin that the chance of her leaving a solid consistent fingerprint was slim to none - when you hold something thin like that in your first, your fingers aren't completely pressed against it. Crime shows simplify it massively; there's a reason whenever you're asked to give your finger/thumbprint, you have to press your finger down on the paper completely, not just tap it. Not to mention they would have to have the fingerprints in the system already to know who they belong to.
