I always thought of Tony Shaloub as his character from Wings -- a stupendously popular show in its time that everyone seems to have forgotten ever existed. But Monk erased that association and replaced it just as easily as Stargate SG-1 transformed Richard Dean Anderson from MacGyver in my mind to Colonel O'Neill. The only problem with Monk's reasoning is that without any physical evidence (no fingerprints or DNA, no gun, no gumball machine) that this guy shot everyone and took the machine, apart from a photo of that guy blowing a bubble a few days earlier (which doesn't really prove anything), there didn't seem to be anything to disprove his "I witnessed the robbery/murder" statement. That black and white reconstruction is a nice story, but what real proof was there? A bit like many of the Columbo Murders; if the suspects never broke down to confess after days of "Oh. And another thing..." badgering, then they never would have been caught.
@Elder_Keithulhu2 жыл бұрын
I would generally agree but, in this case, I think what he had was enough. First, there is a good chance that the guy would not have had an opportunity to get rid of the coins yet and Monk's story might be enough to get a search warrant. More importantly, even if this guy was innocent, the mob would just take Monk at his word. His chance of survival in custody would be marginally better than trying to run.

Can someone that has seen the whole episode tell me if the cops had recovered the "mac 10" that was supposedly used? There is no way that they would have know what gun fired the shots without having the gun to cross reference.
@mikeclemets8632 жыл бұрын
I don't think so. the cops thought it was a gang hit
@joshuahiltpold2482 жыл бұрын
There are ways to tell what type of gun without the gun itself. Granted it wouldn't be exact but they probably dug out the bullets, compared the caliber to known weapons, then surmised automatic cause of the holes, followed by assuming its most likely a mac10 based off commonly used gang guns.
@DH-xw6jp2 жыл бұрын
@@joshuahiltpold248 not really. Ballistics deviate too widely to be able to pinpoint what sort of firearms fired a shot unless they already have the gun on file (in which case, it would be in the evidence locker, not the street... Unless it had been stolen from the locker, but thats another subject.) Mac 10s were cambered in .45acp and 9mm, the two most popular rimless pistol calibers in the country. . . that doesn't narrow it down in the slightest. Even if you narrowed it down to only full autos (instead of just "large magazine" firearms). . . There are still a boatload of varieties. Of both pistol amd rifle types. Which leads to my original question, how did they know it was a Mac 10?

@@joshuahiltpold248 i dont know, in a show all about great detective work and how the smallest details can tie a case together and get the bad guy... Maybe, but the store might have a security system or cameras, and he’d be a wanted man if he broke into a store in the middle of the night. The odds are pretty slim anyone would actually try to stop him from stealing a Gumball machine if it happened under normal circumstances. They are worth practically nothing, and the police aren’t going to devote time to tracking him down even if he was spotted on camera. He was just unlucky enough to try to rob the mafia, who wouldn’t let anyone steal any amount from them
