This is a nice video. So glad I came across your channel. I’ve been fishing most of my life, but only recently (within the past few years..., I’m 70, LOL) introduced myself to Tenkara fishing. To say the least, Tenkara has ‘simplified’ fishing for me, so much so that I’ve kind of given up a lot of interest on other forms of fishing I’m familiar with. I also enjoy camping, and I drive an Outback..., so we have a few things in common :) I will look at your other videos.

That step into oblivion in that beaver pond reminded my of a very close call I had one day fishing the Lake Fork river just above the Twin Pots, south of Moon Lake in the Uintas. Big fish rising all over the place in these little riffs and runs, running through some sandy areas before all the water eventually ends up in a substantial lake. Stayed on the dry high spots as much as possible, but at one point just HAD to get within casting range of a very nice fish coming up every few seconds. I stepped off into the water and immediately went up to my waist....obviously super-saturated sand. I instinctively wheeled around and laid out my upper body on the drier mound I had just stepped off of. Fortunately I was able to grab on to enough "stuff" to literally crawl out of that mess. Probably as close to dying as I have ever been. No one around for miles probably, although it was right next to the main road up to Moon Lake. I got the hell out of there as carefully as I could, thoroughly spooked.

I can definitely see the advantages and disadvantages to Tenkara. A long noodley rod would make even a small fish fun but you don't have much casting reach. More line equals longer drifts. Also, wind can be a major factor. On a conventional fly rod you can pull the line in by hand or on the reel making the last few feet of landing a fish easier. Tenkara is nice for throwing in a pack but so is my 7½ foot, 4 piece, 3 weight. Tenkara is relatively inexpensive compared to conventional and you don't have the extra expense of a reel. Hmmmm....I'm just not sold yet, I guess.....
@TenkaraAddict4 жыл бұрын
Hi Brian. I'm not trying to convert anyone. It makes zero difference to me whether you adopt tenkara or not 😁 But you left out what I think are the biggest advantages of tenkara, and those are the simplicity and efficiency. Conventional fly fishing never appealed to me because it just seems so cumbersome. Tenkara is simpler. And you can cast more in any given amount of time with a tenkara rod (no stripping, mending, etc). More casts = more efficiency, and that can mean covering more water and potentially catching more fish. And I think the casting distance point is mostly irrelevant in the small streams that tenkara is designed for and that I fish in my videos. I can reach every nook and cranny of these creeks with a tenkara rod. If you want to fish bigger rivers then yes, casting distance can be an issue, but tenkara is, by definition, a small stream endeavor. Another advantage of tenkara is the drag-free drift. Because with tenkara you generally keep your line off the water, you can cast to the far side of currents and not have your line yank on the fly and move it out of the sweet spot. Just a few other points to think about.
@briankelly61134 жыл бұрын
@@TenkaraAddict I have actually tried a tenkara on the Selway River in Idaho, which is a fairly large river, and as I said earlier, I can definitely see where it has it's advantages. In the small streams that you seem to prefer it has great advantage but, by the same token, I saw one of your videos shot on a high mountain lake where it seems like tenkara would be very limited in it's ability to reach deeper water further out especially when the banks are steep and brushy and you're casting perpendicular to the shore instead of straight upstream, like in small creeks. I guess carrying both types of rods would be a viable solution.
@yoopermann79422 жыл бұрын
you gotta watch where you step around beaver ponds or you might find your self nose deep in a beaver run,, i grew up fishing creeks where you wouldn`t think a self respecting trout would live because of how shallow the water for one is and the second if you did`nt know it was there you could miss it completely

Great video. Do you talk much about your fly setup? Is the casting method similar to traditional fly fishing?

I have a list of the gear I use on my website. Casting is much easier than with traditional fly fishing because the line is fixed to the rod. Basically you just flick your wrist to cast.

Section 4E of the Canadian Fisheries Act states "No person shall fish in any manner within 23 m downstream from the lower entrance to any fishway, obstruction or leap." - you may disagree with it but I can assure you that rule is there for a reason in Canada - to protect the fish and the conservation of fish - come to Canada and try it, see how you make out.

These are residential trout that probably don't move much further than the next bend or hole, unless weather or predators dictates them to. Laws like the one you mention are more intended to protect migratory species like salmon which need to move through obstructions to reach spawning grounds. If fishing small streams like this is as unethical as you say, I'm sure we'd have rules explaining so to stop us. Til then, small stream structures like beaver dams create great area to fish here in the states.
