Whakatane is a beautiful place. I used to stay there around 2018 and play for Marist Whakatane 15s. Great place and kind people. Now I'm watching this from QLD Brisbane and credit to Piri and the boys for this video. Lord bless

Hard! Yeah I'm out in Oz country too. QLD Stanthorpe. Grew up as a kid in Whakatane btwn 86 - 94.. Jumping off the bridge, catching whitebait and spear eeling creeks out towards Opotiki. Surfing at the Heads and Opape. Beautiful place, amazing memories of youth and unbridled freedom.

Fantastic video! My twin girls (9yrs) are going eeling next Tuesday as part of their school camp, they are nervous as it’s their first time. So this video has given them a good idea of what to expect and bonus all the little eels facts you dropped for us! Thank you boys.

A great, great series. It brings back so many memories. I came to NZ in 1961 during the heyday of Barry Crump, and left for Oz forty years later. In that time I saw the decline of many things we used to take for granted. The mussel beds on the Noises at the entrance to Auckland harbour. They were so thick I never thought I'd see them disappear. But when I returned after a few years they had all been stripped. The crayfish off the Coromandel were thick until the fishermen put down more and more pots until there was almost nothing left. Fishing from the Florence Kennedy leaving from the Auckland wharf and returning with a great catch of snapper but that too has gone. I used to go down to Maori Bay and get a feed of mussels off the rocks for the family but then the new comers came and stripped even the mussel spat from the rocks. The Maori have the power to put a stop to all this and this video is an indication of the change in attitude that is coming. Long may it continue.
