Fishing with Rod

The Cariboo Region in British Columbia has big lakes which produce trophy-sized kokanee up to 4 pounds. In summer 2020, I joined senior biologist Mike Ramsay for a couple of days of fishing at Deka Lake. Watch to see if we managed to get some big kokanee!

I'm looking forward to a trip planned for this summer to Moosehaven Resort near Deka. I'm looking forward to your video tonight, thanks Rod!

That's great. Russ the resort owner is excellent and really takes pride of his place, always spending so much time upkeeping it. The kokanee fishing in front of the resort at Hathaway is pretty good from what I remember. There are also quite a few smaller lakes to venture to for trout. Just make sure you bring bug repellant up, the mosquitoes can be really unforgiving there (the whole region in general).

speaking of flashers, i know someone who refuses to use them because she said they take the bite away from the lure too many times and a lot of the "lost" fish were actually fish pulling out of the clip by hanging onto the dodger. She had a very successful charter business with almost all repeat business. She was never afraid to try things others weren't doing like no dodger, going 2-3 times deeper than most would go, and caught salmon on bass tube jigs for years. She's retired now so i'm giving away her secrets a few at a time. hahah.

These were actually considered the smaller ones for this stock. Like Mike said in the video, during a good year, they can reach as much as 4lb, which would be almost twice as big as these!

Hi Rod, great video as always! I'd definitely be interested to see a video on your thoughts on hatcheries, and whether they are beneficial or harmful to fisheries in the grand scheme of things. Definitely an interesting topic to me. Cheers!
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. You'll see references to the hatchery topics in future videos for sure. It isn't a black and white issue, hatchery is just one approach to mitigate the damages we've done on the fish stocks. A little bit of it would give them bit of a boost. Too much of it would have the reverse effect.

My first impression of how kokanee taste many years ago was probably a 6 or 7 out of 10, and those fish were from Kawkawa Lake, therefore I had never been too excited about it. These fish from Deka and other deep lakes in the Cariboo region, not only does their flesh look great, they taste ridiculously good. I was first told that they in fact make excellent sashimi, and I was skeptical but was pleasantly surprised once I tried some. I give them easily a 9 or 10 out of 10.

Unlike rivers in BC, treble and barbed hooks can be used in most lakes. Some lakes only permit the use of single barbless, and those would be specified in the regulations under those lakes in the water-specific table.
