These videos are just a pure delight to watch. Ariel impresses the heck out of me. What a trooper, wading with a strap to pull the boat through shallow water is awesome! My lady of 18 years was just like that. We would hike and fish together, process our venison and clean fish together. She was proud to be my Sous Chef, cutting up all of the vegetables and helping me brine meat and pressure cook. I lost her 7 years ago around Memorial Day and watching Eric and Ariel reminds me of all of those wonderful years with my soul mate Megan.

Wow, Eric & Arielle, that’s really the first time I’ve seen such a pronounced hump on a (coho?) salmon. I’ve only seen footage of them as they are very near the end of their journey. I learn something new each time I watch an episode. Thanks for bringing comfort and new knowledge to this old teacher as she approaches 3/4 of a century. I live vicariously through your exploits and love how you approach each new endeavor… Thanks for bringing quality to our lives! Simple Living is a gift! 💞

Hi Suzanne, great observation about the huge hump on the salmon. This is actually a pink salmon, as the adult males will get that hump before they spawn. I hope to go fishing for some here in British Columbia soon. Have a great day!

Fantastic as always…you using the pinks’ eggs to catch the delicious silvers reminded me of my Alaska-born and raised niece (a firefighter too). She and a friend (young teens at the time) were out hiking and fishing around Hope but didn’t have anything with them to carry their catch. So she stuffed every pocket she had with the pinks eggs to get them home. Still makes me laugh - but she is still quite a woodsman ;)

The best luck I used to have back in the day for spinning lures was the blue metallic vibram. Worked very well for kings and silvers. I think the blue would kick in their territorial instincts thinking it to be another fish. Fly fishing was usually a purple egg sucking leech. Watching you cure salmon eggs brought back all those memories when I was stationed in Alaska in the 90's and did very much the same thing.

Look up “egg loop knot” for keeping the skein on the hook so you can ditch the spawn sack mesh. A sliding float works better for salmon. Deepen up until you find bottom then come up 6”-12”. Coho will bite eggs in water with far less visibility than what you were fishing.
