I love the way you describe things in a simple way. Irish whisky is quite a mess and this video helps me to sort things out in my head. Thank you. In one of your previous videos (early, early), you so effectively described the point of Japanese whisky and how Nikka emerged after Taketsuru left Suntory. Keep on doing great things.

I have been an Irish whiskey fanboy for 36 years. I'm 57 and have had a bottle of Bushmills in my house every day for the last 36 years. I know I'm privileged that I have 3 bottles of Bushmills 1608 400 Anniversary and can say with all certainty that it's my favorite whiskey of all time. Recently I have tried High n Wicked Foursquare Irish whiskey. It's not a traditional Irish, and technically High n Wicked isn't even a distiller, but they partner with distilleries around the world and their Irish aged in Bourbon barrels and finished in Rum barrels is delicious.

@pduffy81Ай бұрын
for historic context both Redbreast and the Spots originally were distilled in Bow Street (JJ&S -- John Jameson & sons) distillery in Dublin. you can see old bottles which specifically mention JJ&S on them. once upon a time all Jameson whiskey was Pot stilled and it was all sold to Bonders (Gilbey's, Mitchell's etc.) -- they only started bottling themselves with "Crested Ten" (now rebranded to Jameson Crested) in '63 - what we call Jameson now dates to early 70's

The story of Irish whiskey is really worth telling. Especially how they almost went extinct in the 1960s. People often don't know that Midleton is effectively the fusion of 3 different companies (Jameson, Powers, Cork), that were forced to "join or die" by a market decline.

Great video!! The Busker Irish whiskey also has the Single Pot, Single Malt, Single Grain and the Blend of all 3. Because they are reasonably priced, the Busker range can be used to do comparisons to understand the different Irish whiskey styles. IMHO... Also, the latest Jamison Single Pot Still is interesting because they use 5 different casks!

Maybe I miss remembering something, but I'm pretty sure Busker came out of working with Walsh distillery actually. Which would make sense on why they have similar profiles.
@Stephen_Curtin2 ай бұрын
@@WhiskeyVaultyup the distillery where busker is made was built by a big international group (Campari I think) and was supposed to become the home of Walsh whiskey, but the deal fell through, and so they had to come up with a new brand (busker)

Green spot and redbreast 12 is all you need. It will come in under £100 or likely $140 because of import. Im irish btw so that might count for something. Cheaper irish whiskeys that are nice are red bush from Bushmills, paddy's, sexton, teelings small batch and jameson black barrel.

If you do, here's some pointers: -Look for bottles that are off the safe path of "Irish Single Pot Still". There's a great peated Irish single malt called Connemara, for example. Or the West Cork finish series, that has the stuff finished in interesting barrels like Calvados or charred bog oak. -Check if it's sourced, Irish whiskey has seen a boom and lots of new distilleries just source their stuff from big name brands. -Don't miss out on small releases. I have a great bottle made to celebrate James Joyce from Writers Tears, and it was a steal.

20 years ago you used to be able to get Bushmills 12 year old (or was it 10ys hmm) that was done all in one cask. It was my favourite. Then as demand out weighed supply they started maturing it 2 woods and the flavour profile changed. Initially it was a special release then it became the norm. I Never lived it as much. Best was to describe it, was a smoother more refined version of bushmills black bush. I recall writing to the distillery to ask if I could buy a case of Bushmills 12 matured in 1 wood like they used to do. The person replying gave a very pretentious response that she worked there for 20 years and they never did it in 1 wood. I replied by sending a picture of the empty bottles on the original matured in 1 wood, the special the bought out matured in 2 woods then the current norm matured in 2 woods. (I had a collection of all my old bottles). He response was she was a new employee and didn't know, but its not available

Which I really need to do because I didn't like Rye the first couple times I tried it and then I came around, so 🤷 this video might have given me the nudge I need to give it a 2nd and poaaibly 3rd chance lol

Apologies for not keeping up with the channel, I was becoming too jealous of all the delicious whiskies you get to drink, lol. This was a great little introduction to Irish whiskey, I'd love to see more. As a born and bred Irishman I have to believe Irish whiskey is superior to all others, even though I do love the occasional scotch or bourbon. Any chance anyone would know of any good books or other resources about the history of Irish whiskey? I'd very much like to delve deeper. PS: Your pronunciation of Uisce was perfect but beatha should sound a little more like bah-hah and/or vah-ha, and I had to assume what that third word you said was lol, it sounded like Éireannach (air-in-knock) {bonus points if you really get the phlegm up on that -CH sound, it should sound almost Arabic}.

Is there a diminishing returns in aging a whisky after a certain number of years? Meaning that at what point,age,proof of whisky do you have to stop the aging because it is not getting better and it is starting to get worse.

Because they are in the end recipes from different companies and aimed at different markets. The Spots are, as Daniel said, made for Mitchell & Son Wine Merchants. Redbreast was made for Gilbey's Wine & Spirits, until bought by Irish Distillers AKA Midleton in the '80s (they were already making it for Gilbey's). Powers was the brand of John Power & Son distillery, with the John's Lane name being a call back to the John's Lane distillery in Dublin (it was sadly demolished after closing).

A great man once said, "If you want Scotch just take a good Irish Whiskey and throw some dirt in it". He may have a point. Scotch is a bit peaty.
@BoyanDimitrovАй бұрын
There is this common misconception that a defining characteristic of scotch is peatiness when in fact the vast majority of scotch is not peated at all. Highland whisky is generally quite sweet while Speyside whisky tends to be fruity or floral - both definitely never peaty.
