Every driver (ok, enthusiast) should drive a Caterham at least once in his life….nothing quite like them.

A brilliant car to drive , back to the basics of driving pleasure and Caterham and Lotus teach other car manufacturers how a car should handle. Wonderful car.

Couple of corrections needed. You can get the 170 with an optional lowered floor but not the larger SV body. Also the sport suspension of the R isn't stiffer than the road suspension of the S, they're actually identical apart from the R's sport suspension has ride height adjustment.

This is EXACTLY what a sports car should be like. And by that I mean if when you get home after spanking it down a twisty B road, and you're not shaking because you frightened the living hell out of yourself, then it ain't no sports car! Those modern, overweight, overly sanitised "sports cars" are nothing more than nice cars that look sporty. No thanks!

Hope folks don't mind but I just came here to vent. Someone has *abandoned* one of these lovely cars *one of only 60 that were built!* near where I live in Stoke Newington, North London. It has been sitting there parked at the roadside for YEARS now, so long that the protective tarpaulin cover has completely rotted away and now the cockpit is just open to the elements. It just P!SSES me off, such a waste.

It's wonderful, but too expensive. If it was 15k sure, but it's almost 30k

Do you think Caterham would make a profit if it was £15,000? Or 20, or 25? Not a chance. It’s the same with Brompton folding bicycles. Reviews are full of “Way to expensive” comments. But these items are made in the UK and the workers earn UK wages. Demand for both remains as high as production can meet. My Brompton was pricey seven years ago. I saved up my pension to pay cash. I use it most days and I’ve replaced the non folding pedal and a set of brake blocks. I once owned a Series 4 seven as my only car for a year. It was a bit ratty but only in terms of shininess; my memory of that ownership remains that of an ear to ear grin. I’m not even remotely wealthy but if you want one of these enough, concentrate on the issue and find a route to getting one. Save all you can. There’s nothing expensive to go wrong and they’re peanuts to run with a guaranteed easy resale. You will never regret it. Hackneyed I know but….”The quality is appreciated long after the price is forgotten”.

But how can a car, any car, "new" car, be sold these days. Without ANY safety features whatsoever??? That has to be illegal and downright culpable?
@robertwillis4061 Жыл бұрын
Why? All the tech stuff makes people lazy How often do you use active stability control, anti lock brakes, lane assist. When you aren't concentrating on driving and trying to play with the phone or overly complicated information system.
@Mexxx65 Жыл бұрын
@@robertwillis4061 Then why do so many new cars fail their obligatory safety standards tests? And have to be re-engineered? And re-tested to be considered safe? ..or is there some obscure uk clause in car insurance policies in tiny print that says,"If the car you own has absolutely no safety features, she'll be sweet no worries"????
@robertwillis4061 Жыл бұрын
@@Mexxx65 go take a test drive in one. Then you will understand. It is a " drivers car" not just an object to transport you from A to B. Also under legislation it has limited production exemptions.
@graemegaw5536 Жыл бұрын
In terms of the legality it’s technically a kit-car so there is a lot less legislation around the build, features etc. You can buy a factory built car but that’s an option you choose when you order it
@Mexxx65 Жыл бұрын
@@graemegaw5536 I have no issue that a "kit-car" or a "limited run" car passes uk legalities to be driven on your roads. My OP, is just raising the Question. should this be, in this day and age? I'd wager many a uk car owner has lost their lives driving one of these cars on the road. But ofc they are not driven daily, and you see bugger all of them on the roads, as of their limited availability.
