My Pawpaw used to repair/run graders, crawlers, and other diesel equipment (also spent some time in the mines themselves) for the coal company he used to work for (retired in the early 70's). No wonder he was deaf as a stump. That thing is LOUD!

The longer it ran, the better it ran. After it was good and warm there was hardly and smoke. Just the normal diesel smoke. What a machine!

If the CAT engineers that designed the 212 Grader were still around, they would shake their heads in amazement of the service life you are getting out of that. Some things are timeless and are useful beyond their years.
@avnsteve12 жыл бұрын
I wish I could say the same for myself!
@TestECull2 жыл бұрын
And today's CAT engineers would shake their heads at that long service life because it means a new machine isn't being sold...
@andrewalexander94922 жыл бұрын
@@TestECull Meh, not really. Squatch and Senior would not be in the market for a new grader if they didn't have an old one, and that grader really isn't "in service" in any real sense. They're keeping it functioning, because their hobby is keeping antique equipment functioning, and like the man said, this is the fist time they've started it in 2 years. It ain't like they're using it daily, and anyone who had a daily need for a grader wouldn't be using that one.
@TestECull2 жыл бұрын
@@andrewalexander9492 You're hung up on technicalities that do not apply to the company as a whole dude. CAT...or indeed ANY manufacturing company...makes less money when they make more durable goods. You make a road grader that's still able to work in its intended usage 80+ years later you're missing out on repeat sales you'd get if you exploit society's disposable mindset and build them just good enough to last 10-15 years. The CAT engineers of today would say this machine is way way way over-built, and in re-engineering it, would come up with a machine far flimsier and more fragile that has a useful life orders of magnitude shorter.

This is what makes a Cat different from the competition. Yes, you WILL pay more. No question. But this is what you get for that extra money. And, they're almost guaranteed to have spare parts on the shelf. Buying some cheap junk will cost you less on the purchase, but let's see a Brand X sit in a field for years and not only fire up, but go to work like it was made for. Now, the owners, and this Cat couldn't have better owners, make a huge difference on how that piece of equipment runs.

Both Sr and the Cat 212 are like the bunny with the base drum. The Cat deserves at least basic maintenance so I recommend that you fix the knuckle buster and do the other jobs to keep her functional until her number comes up on the big wheel of tired equipment restorations. Great to see the old equipment in operation. Keep em coming. 🥸👍🔧🔨💥❗️✅

One of the best, close-up, Grader action movies, all those shafts, rods, knuckles, UJ's going every which way and all in the hands of a couple of expert amateurs. Donkey engine (pony motor) still fitted and working. Bravo !. On the subject of beautification, l would -with respect- prefer that you don't, though l readily acknowledge it's now leaving the realm of patina and entering the realm of scabby. Some transparent magic potion to halt the iron worm corrosion, at least. Cheers.
