I was given a 3j d2 1947. It is missing the head . Everything turns over . I am really hoping to get it totally rebuilt. I managed to find a lot of spare parts.. a block with new pistons and rings . A crank shaft that has been x-rayed for any cracks. A complete radiator with the Caterpillar D2 tags on the side. And the donkey motor complete. It is just finding the time to strip and rebuild. I have watched you do this rebuild from the start to finish. Very impressed with your enthusiasm. Obviously I need to get myself in gear and start . Thank you for all your hard work on your channel. It is awesome.

The probing around is when one of the flexible bore scopes is handy since some have a magnetic tip or claws. At the least can give a visual aid while fishing. Just don't give yourself vertigo as all the control directions get mixed up...

I can't help but comment! My dad had a D2 that he used for cultivating and discing his orange groves in and around Riverside, CA. I was pretty little and I remember it kind of scared me when he would start it up. And I didn't really understand what was going on. This was in the early '50s. It was a pretty cool tractor. I have a small brass pendant with a D2 cast into it from Caterpillar.

Well it’s interesting to see you have the same problems many of us have with the D2 starting system! Carb won’t idle down making difficult to engage the pinion, pinion won’t stay engaged so you have to hold it engaged, and so on and so forth. They are still so much fun to run and it’s nice to have a good challenge!! Thanks for the great video👍🏼.

Was half expecting you to try to fish the safety wire in and: "Couldn't get both hands in there...so I made a tool! Yep, whipped out the lathe and whittled out two sets of doctor's forceps, but heavier, to work safety wire remotely. Sort of surgery on the pinion. Now, these are not 304 stainless like doctor's tools, but this isn't sterile surgery. Mild steel works just fine."😄

9:08 I usually pour hard casting wax inside these kinds of places. It's resistant to heat, it takes more than your average hot day to melt it, and it seals off any pore and deflects crud from gathering in the first place. I've made a set of small tools from old cooking utensils to shape it into water passages.

Absolutely right on your statement shiny paint over existing problems that most certainly will re appear, I have worked with aircraft over 35 years, A large portion of the bolts on the jet engines have drilled heads even castle nuts requiring SS safety wire and or a cotter pin. That certain was a tight area you managed to get into to get those bolts started, well done.

I agree with your opinion on "quick restorations" for tractors. I've cheated by throwing a "rebuilt" Kohler on a 100 round fender and later found out the fella just cleaned the carb and gave it new points, the 8hp was still too weak to turn mower blades. I agree, do it right the first time even if it sets you back some. As always great content Squatch.

That's not a cheater bar, Squatch. It's better known as a torque amplifier. And a hammer of course, is a manual impact tool. Oh, and you don't bend metal to fit, you form it. Hey Toby, got a question what are the chances of getting back to the X231 this winter. You were making some good progress on it until you did the little experiment about people watching the content and got onto a bunch of CAT stuff and had a lot more viewers for the CAT stuff. Some of us who have been faithful followers that have been around since the beginning would like to see that project back going. I love all the content on your channel but a little disappointed about that one project sitting collecting dust because it was going to be a very special crawler because it's truly one of one. Had to comment at five minutes in, yeah some bolts and such you can just look at and know that a step of getting a long breaker bar needs to be skipped in favor of adding a cheater bar to the breaker. But to do reach into a machine through a hole that looks the part of a 'take some skin off the knuckles or the back of the hand' you're much braver than I. Still though, quite an interesting series all of these d2 videos are.

@mwilliamshs
@mwilliamshs Жыл бұрын
@@daveanderson2316 there are exceptions. Early Harley Davidsons, arguably the brand most associated with loud engines, were known for their quietness. They were called silent gray fellows. Typically, however, motorcycles are louder than sedans. Cars have their engines inside compartments, under hoods, generally surrounded by fluid cooling jackets and have their exhausts passing through heavy iron exhaust manifolds and long tubes into large mufflers and exiting far from the operator. Motorcycles typically have none of those things, except liquid cooling systems nowadays. Small engines are typically revved higher which requires more combustion events and thus creates more noise. Two-stroke engines like those nearly always found in chainsaws are again, revved high, and produce twice as many as combustion events as four-strokes like those typical to cars and atvs. There are a great many reasons pony engines are louder at peak power than a dozer diesel at start up.
